I have to get to shows really early so that I can find a place to put my ass, so I see a !lot! of opening bands. You know how that goes: you see a lot of OK bands, but you have to learn to kind of space out through bands you don't particularly care for. Every once in a while, though, you score with a great band you've never heard of. Last Wednesday's U.S.E. show at du Nord? Mega score! I've never seen so many people smiling through three bands in a row. [...]

New York is my favorite city in the whole world. I love that I can do anything I want at just about any given time, and if I can't do it quite at that moment, I know it's only hours away until I can do it. I'm elated to be living back in my birthplace, although I enjoyed the California weather for 5+ years, I am not California material at this point in my life. It's a gorgeous place to visit but I am a New Yorker at heart and I will always have a yearning in my soul if [...]

Yet another band that has snuck up on me. San Francisco's Scrabbel has been around for a minute but never had a track I felt I could really sink my teeth into. However, it looks like there are some new songs popping up from the new album which could mean I change my tune 180 degrees. Contradiction is perhaps one of my favorite pastimes if you didn't already know. Seriously though, keep an eye out for their upcoming shows, I head the SXSW performance was really fun. Also check out their records covers and t-shirts which are sometimes [...]

This post is long, and overdue, but I wanted to be thorough and include all the bands I saw. I missed most of Wednesday due to work, but packed in enough free shows Thurs.-Sun. to more than make up for it, although I am getting kind of old and took it easy in the evenings for the most part. I've finally gone through hundreds of pics (click on pictures below for larger image), and will include mp3s from each band below and hopefully a link to some of their live SXSW sets, since they did almost all give me free [...]

I thought I would post some new music today...And it being Friday and all I thought what better than to post this fun, happy new single from a little band called Scrabbel . Dan Lee and Becky Barron are the two members behind the music and I just love their fun energetic pop. Hope everyone has an excellent Friday! Mine is much better now that my terrible headache went away. mp3: Emily, I Scrabbel on [...]

one striking trend that jumped out when endeavoring to put together this compilation of bay area music - of which this post serves as the first of two volumes - was how much of the collective sound reflected what can reasonably be described, i think, as the city's, the region's, dueling ethos: the populist counter-cultural strain, or hippie for short, & the high technology sector. take, for example, the oakland band xiu xiu , who will make an appearance on part 2 (and who, by the way, have a killer promotion tied into their new album, [...]
It's New York Week next week on the History Channel. That means when you decide to take a break from your relentless rock and roll lifestyle, you'll have something better to watch than Cash Cab (lovin it like I do) as you sink into your couch. Since I am feeling fond of all things New York-related lately , I am going to TiVo this action (it starts November 19th). There's a big contest going on over at their website where you can get whisked off for a 4 day history-themed tour [...]

Sorry for the lag, I've been using a lot of my storage space for the Booty Patrol . You should head over there at once and download the new of Montreal tribute album Aluminum Plums (and the several concerts available there). This tribute really is better than many others I've heard - the musicianship is elevated, and there's a good range of periods in of Montreal's music, and in the interpretations, and also a good range of experience levels - from bedroom recordings to an acapella group to Pitchfork-worthy bands like Tokyo's Elekibass and former [...]

Time is short 'til my departure to San Francisco (okay, via Oakland) tomorrow afternoon for the six-day fiesta of Noise Pop , the Bay Area's best independent music festival. Its proximity on the calendar to the pricey and crowded SXSW means that many of my music blogger friends are opting for Austin and not S.F. I say: their loss. Not that I wouldn't love to go to SXSW (and should probably start saving my kopecks now for 2008), but Noise Pop is just the right size, high quality, varied, and [...]
