Dinosaur Jr., Scratch Acid, and Pierced Arrows at the Crystal Ballroom, Fri Dec 16

Dinosaur Jr., Scratch Acid, and Pierced Arrows at the Crystal Ballroom, Fri Dec 16 photos: Ned Lannamann I'm in the will-call line at the Crystal Ballroom, finding myself childishly psyched for this show as though I was a teenager again. There's been a lot of anticipation for this one, mostly nostalgic reminiscences of the first time someone heard Bug , and acknowledgment that this would have been a pretty badass bill back in 1988. I was only four then, but hey—I can imagine. You've got rootsy NW punk rock legends Pierced Arrows , a reunited Scratch Acid (David [...]

Tonight in Music: Dinosaur Jr. & Scratch Acid, Portland Cello Project, Jonathan Toubin Benefit & More

Child Children_New Oil
DINOSAUR JR., SCRATCH ACID, PIERCED ARROWS ( Crystal Ballroom , 1332 W Burnside) Oh man, this is gonna be special: For this super-short West Coast tour, Dinosaur Jr. performs their 1988 classic album Bug in its entirety. And if that were not enough—good heavens, you are greedy—before they play they're going to be interviewed about the album live, on stage, by none other than Henry Rollins. All that plus a Scratch Acid reunion? There isn't a "YES!" big enough for this awesomeness. NED LANNAMANN Also, read our article on Scratch Acid [...]

Holiday Show Previews (As Written by Bennington, The Pretentious Music Critic Elf)

Merry Moondoggies ::: photo by Abbey Simmons I get tired of writing about the same bands all the time. Just as I'm sure you get tired of reading me write about the same bands over and over again. So what do you think I did for this holiday season? I wrote a letter to the North [...]

[Photos + GIFs] Cropped Out Fest – 11.11 thru 11.13.11 – Louisville

[Photos + GIFs] Cropped Out Fest – 11.11 thru 11.13.11 – Louisville Cropped Out Fest not only succeeded in coming back a second time, a feat not easily accomplished, the stridently fringe festival also returned in bigger and better fashion - in terms of attendance, community enthusiasm, facilities, and that intangible festival vibe that can make or break a multi-stage weekend event. Cropped Out 2011 certainly became the product of learning what worked and what didn't from the inaugural fest last year. Though the weather is beautiful in this part of the country during the fall, it can also act unpredictably, as we learned during Cropped Out 2010 - [...]

[Q&A] Scratch Acid's David Yow on pulling a MacGuyver, making reunion bank and losing his virginity

Scratch Acid - Cannibal
David Yow is one of the more interesting frontmen to have come out of rock and roll in the past few decades, if only because of the contradictions inherent in the way that he operates: on the one... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

This week's cook shows: Shit Horse, Scratch Acid and more!

This week's cook shows: Shit Horse, Scratch Acid and more! I wrote about the Zen Frisbee Halloween show featuring Shit Horse for this week's Indy. In case you don't see it, here's the gist: Shit Horse put on a great show at Hopscotch despite technical difficulties, and you should go see them Monday night at Local 506 . Give the bass player some

Give the bass player some To be honest I'm looking for motivation to get back into the 4 strings thinking. Besides literally trying to find the bandwidth to do it right with Eastern Anchors . I'm not sure why you'd need more inspiration than bands like Girls Against Boys for inspiration in particular when there is awesome tone, tube amps and distortion pedals are at play on every song. GvsB were a innovator in this spectrum of rock, however there are a crap load of other bass players who's bass licks are just as stellar. Kill the Sexplayer [...]

Cropped Out 2011 @ The Crummy Den – 11/11-12

Cropped Out 2011 @ The Crummy Den – 11/11-12 From Cropped Out's Facebook : Cropped Out aims to celebrate a select fistful of contemporary musicians, artists, and artisans whom we feel reflect a greater undercurrent of sonic, visual, and conceptual exploration. It is our intention to turn heads toward the talents of those often omitted, overlooked, or cropped out of "the big picture." These are the minds most interesting to us, the minds most capable of emerging from and quickly returning to their lightlessness, if only to be briefly met by a niche appreciation. Cropped Out KY: Cropped Out is a locally [...]
