When it rains it pours around here. Another one from Seattle for you guys, the Creakies are guitar and drum duo that have been bending my ear with their brand of noisy pop. They've played around town infrequently, but hopefully that will change with the released their Redwood EP that came out earlier this month via bandcamp (thanks to fuzzbook for the heads up). It's four songs that are influenced by punk rock and indie DIY. Lead track Arnold's Song has a classic fuzzy rif and high pitched melody that is part [...]

MP3: "Grand Champion Steer" Between the Ass Ponys and Wussy , Chuck Cleaver's got 11 or so full-lengths and countless EPs and singles under his belt. One wouldn't expect the heavily tattooed Cincinnati songwriter to produce his best collection of songs this late in his already highly-prolific career, but that's exactly what he's done with, in my opinion, the best release coming of out Ohio in 2011. To be fair, Cleaver's not the sole songwriter in Wussy, it's a collective effort with Lisa Walker (guitar, vocals), [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. Priceless footage of two of Columbus' finest Envelope & DJ Detox playing a High School graduation party. At some point, Envelope tells the kids that not going to college will lead them to "the misdemeanor of the month club". He also lies to them and tells them that the Black Eyed Peas are taking him on tour. Shot by Pelham Johnston, Adrian Tucker Envelope & DJ Detox will be playing the Ace of Cups Grand Opening Saturday. Over the winter, rumors started circulating about a new rock club moving into the space formerly occupied by Miani's and Sloopy's. Well, the rumor is inching closer to reality. Marcy Mays, co-owner of Surly Girl Saloon and singer/guitarist in Scrawl , plans to open a venue in the North Campus building called Ace of Cups . Go "Like" it on Facebook to keep tabs on how things are progressing. For now, details are minimal (hence the "Drink, Music, Food" description), but if all goes according to plan, we'll have more [...]

This whole go back to the 902s thing isn't just for guy bands. Amy Franz and Hayley McKee of Melbourne, Australia duo Super Wild Horses are conjuring the recent past on their debut album 15 just released on Hozac in the States and Aarght! in their home country. Its bouncy rhythms have a playful Tuscadero feel to them, though I don't think Super Wild Horses are as hopped up on sugar as Tuscadero were back in the day. Fifteen also owes a little to the Columbus, Ohio trio Scrawl . [...]

New Bomb Turks Gibson Bros [...]
Scott Johnson shot some pretty great video of Saturday's Parking Lot Blowout in Columbus. Here's a couple vids from the Gibson Bros reunion and several from Scrawl's set. Dan Dow does his screwy version of Neil Young's "Ohio" Scrawl - "I'm Ready" More good Scott Johnson PLBO stuff from those two bands here . Pics coming soon. Anybody got New Bomb Turks video?

We told you before about the Gibson Bros, Scrawl and New Bomb Turks. Here's the full deal, including after-party w/ Ted Leo: The CMC has a fancy new website , too. (And some dude wrote about the Gibson Bros reunion in this week's Other Paper .)

Gibson Brothers This year's Parking Lot Blow Out @ Surly Girl, hosted by the Columbus Music Co-Op is bringing out all the big bands of yesteryear for one huge event. Headlining (in no particular order) will be New Bomb Turks , Scrawl , and The Gibson Brothers . Save the date: Saturday, July 10. Each one of those bands headlining ALONE would make this a special event, but having all three under one tent is just insane. New Bomb Turks play 1-2 shows [...]
Song of the Day: "11:59 (It's January)" by Scrawl

Media outlets seem to be rediscovering legendary Columbus "girl-punk forebears" SCRAWL recently.
I reviewed the new Larry Jon Wilson album for the August edition Spin . You can check it out on pg. 93 in print or the digital edition . Also in that issue: Spin's list of the "100 greatest bands you've (probably) never heard of," which is a good read, especially because it includes four legendary Columbus bands: Gaunt, Great Plains, Royal Crescent Mob and Scrawl.
Scrawl's set Saturday at The Summit was amazing. Let's hope they play more than every 1.5 years. From Shirley: See more videos here .

MP3 : Born Toulouse-Lautrec by New Bomb Turks New Bomb Turks still do a few shows every year, and when they happen they are always a must-see, especially in Columbus. What is making this show even more insane is that Scrawl will be playing too. It doesn't get much better than that. Expect a sold out show, lots of drinking, several injuries, and many many many hangovers. Chicago Bonus : The Turks are playing the next night @ The Cobra.
"No? What? No?! Come on! COME ON! Don't you know who I am?" - Tom, yelling at an uncooperative Fredericks soundboard "It's like, well, if we land on water ... s' uh !" - Sean in Rampbridge, explaining why he typically ignores the in-flight safety speech "I think I saw him mouth the word 'munch'." -- Sean, catching Flight 1549 Cpt. Sullenberger diss a talkative passenger during the boarding process "It would appear that I'm some kind of good luck charm, wouldn't it?" - Sean, [...]
Here's a great podcast from Pat Radio . It plays some "classic" Columbus bands but also songs from some unforgettable shows that have probably never been heard on the internet. We're talking Nick Cave, The Pixes, and more from the 80s... Click here to download the podcast. Tim Anstaett, publisher of The Offense fanzine, is my guest this week. He talks about The Offense and plays some great local music from back in the day. He also shares some stuff from shows he promoted in Columbus. 1. Great [...]
