This album is full of competent '60s-style pop. If only the band didn't hamstring themselves by burying the vocals deep in the mix. To say Oxnard, California's Sea Lions know the value of brevity would be an understatement. Their debut album contains 15 songs in just over 29 minutes, and not a single track tops the three-minute mark. Singer/songwriter Adrian Pillado has filled this record with easygoing classic pop songs that wouldn't feel out of place on a compilation of forgotten pop/rock bands of the '60s. Sea Lions frontman Adrian Pillado may sing about how he wishes he was Lou Reed but his band's brand of garage indie pop is essentially more Jonathan Richman or Beat Happening — frisky, shambolic songs themed around social neuroses that seldom (never?) breach the three-minute mark. And perhaps the peculiar poignancy of a song like "I Don't Wanna Go Out" is something that not only the reserved personality types can readily identify with. Sea Lions jangle like its 1986, but are 20 odd years too late to make it on the C86 cassette. Shame, as they would have stood their ground back then. Where they fit in now is probably on the fringes of indie – they may strum enthusiastically, but their songs aren't always strong enough to take the grey wave of their musically dour persona. It's been well over a year since Sealions released their retro-minded synth-pop gem, Strange Veins , so it's good to see the band still pushing the record and drawing inspiration from its soft-hued dancefloor musings. This morning the group unveiled their latest video, this one for the lush and atmospheric "Golden." Directed by Troy Stains, the video takes an offbeat and whimsical approach with a recurring kaleidoscope effect and some rather quirky scenes involving fruit and honey helping to coat everything is a semi-surreal veneer.
