Cover Art by Miro Denck The beginning of the month can only mean one thing here at The Wild Honey Pie - it's mixtape time! With the first edition of our Spotify mixtape series, Beekeeping, we featured mostly new music - 31 tracks from artists including Wet , Caveman , Young Galaxy , Poliça , Wild Nothing , and Cayucas . This month, however, we're doing something a bit different. In honor of National Pollinator Week , which takes place from June 17-23, we've created a Spotify playlist of bee-themed music - [...]

Three years ago saw the release of Rogue Wave' s Permalight , and though frontman Zach Rogue delivered a solo album a year later, it's been quite a long minute since we've heard from the indie pop band. That's about to change, as the band has parted ways with Brushfire Records, signed to Vagrant, and readied their fifth studio album, Nightingale Floors. Due out on June 4th, the new record was born out of tragedy stemming from the loss of Rogue's father. Instead of taking a darkly meditative look [...]

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area - and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" - but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album [...]
Philly pop-rock foursome Cold Fronts - who play West Philly DIY space Sprinkle Kingdom next week - released a new single called "Ear Candy," from their latest recordings with local producer Kyle "Slick" Johnson. With a speedy beat and an infectious guitar lead, it's total ear candy - download it for free below. This week's ... Continue reading
With the Folkadelphia Sessions, it has been quite thrilling to be able to share some of the recent in-studio performances that we have recorded with artists like Trixie Whitley, Daniel Bachman, and Angel Olsen. But it's not like this is a new thing for us; Folkadelphia has been recording and airing our sessions via our ... Continue reading

Win our top 31 albums of 2012 ! At this time last year I was completely unaware of the existence of Sea Of Bees , not even having heard the name in passing, though that all changed as Spring made way for Summer and a dear friend of mine sent me the video of Julie Ann Bee singing "Broke" in a tunnel in England. Her performance was beyond heartfelt enough for me to be completely sold before the video [...]

When one thinks of the bittersweet melancholia of Jason Lytle’s lyrics and melodies, it’s funny to think that he has actually played a celebratory part in points of my life. Whether fronting Grandaddy at the Wiltern as I rang in the New Year or performing solo at the Hotel Café while another birthday passed me by, Lytle’s haunting, lo-fi landscapes have always resonated soundly within me. Earplugs were not required at the Bootleg Bar on Tuesday evening, as Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle took the stage with Sea of Bees as the supporting act. It was [...]

The extraordinarily talented Sacramento native Julie Ann Baenziger , better known as Sea of Bees , will be bringing her beautifully idiosyncratic and effortlessly moving vein of off-kilter folk to the UK once again, on the heels of the release of her next single 'Gone ', from her critically lauded sophomore album Orangefarben , released earlier this year on Heavenly Recordings. WATCH A LIVE RECORDING OF 'GONE' HERE: As is coming to be typical of [...]

Here's another sampling of the fine music out your disposal in the Bay Area this weekend! I think that there's something for everyone this week. Thursday, July 19th Ray Davies, The 88 at The Fillmore The Kinks might have been the most influential band in rock. Sure, The Beatles were popular. But The Kinks created [...]

This year's Phono del Sol lineup has all kinds of stellar local bands to get excited about, and Sea of Bees should definitely be one of them. Sacramento-based singer-songwriter Julie Ann Bee has a serious command over her guitar, and a warbling, depthful voice that captivates as it seduces. I was blown away by Sea of Bee's set at the Huichica Music Festival back in June - Julie Ann Bee may be slight, but she has a stage presence that's not to be trifled with (and man, [...]

Sacramento's Sea of Bees (songwriter Julie Ann Bee with other musician friends) has released a new video for "Gone". The track comes from May's Orangefarben , which has been praised by national press for its heartachy candor. The new video, directed by skate video director Mike Rafter, stars Bee, an orange guitar and a desolate-looking Amtrak station. Sea of Bees are playing shows here and there around California this summer, and are on the bill for the Bay Bridged's own Phono del Sol Festival, July 21st at [...]
