"Felix Green and Sea Oleena (siblings Luke and Charlotte Loseth) combine to form the genre-spanning indie-pop group Holobody. Raised in a musical family in Saskatchewan, Canada, the two have been collaborating since childhood, making music and art together and contributing to each other's individual recording projects. Under the pseudonym Felix Green, Luke has released bedroom pop albums on his own and also served as a producer for two albums by his sister. Sea Oleena and Sleeplessness, the two foggy and gorgeous albums written by Charlotte, are notable for their lush, layered sound and universal acclaim from outlets including Pitchfork and [...]

To round off the Music Liberation's Writers takeover week we have Moker ... "Well this is a little surprising. Looking back at the artists I've managed to review in 2011, the one thing that's abundantly clear is that I've heavily favoured music with female vocals and showgaze, layered guitars. This must be some kind of subconscious shift in my tastes as I'd never have normally ticked such boxes if I had to describe my favourite music. [...]
1. Daughter - The Wild Youth // Reviewed 9th December by Jon Sidwell "Elena and Igor have an ear to create space within their music, moments where their instruments can breath and the listener can fully appreciate the beauty that is being played out before them. The poignant combination of Elena's lingering vocals and the delicate acoustic/electric guitars demonstrate how simplicity in music is something to be applauded." || Daughter [...]

Standing at seven tracks in length, Sea Oleena's new release ' Sleeplessness ' could be considered more mini-album than EP, but that still wouldn't justify the enormity of the music recorded by Montréal multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Loseth . The record is a beautiful warm blanket of songs, each one an epic cacophony of layered sounds, reverb and haunting female vocals delivered with the unassuming charm of a girl humming a song in her bedroom. Each hushed swirl of a song bleeds into the next, joined together by the rumbling and eerie ambient sounds throughout. For [...]

Earlier this year I was exposed to the beautiful sounds of Sea Oleena . The Canadian song writer/producer, Charlotte Oleena, explores a spectrum of melody and vocal that has been touched on by a few past favorites; Bat For Lashes and Mirah , but in it's most broken-down form. Ms.Oleena has a cure for any kind of feeling, her chimey simplistic nature hymns and sky reaching reverbs, create a revised type of rhythm and blue. Each one of her tracks are incredibly easy to listen to, they are consistent, and thats why you cant go wrong [...]
Guilty Ghosts feat.

The EP, Cathedral , from Melbourne violinist James Wallace (aka Wintercoats) fits the bill perfectly for me today. Listening to this EP accentuates the cool fall air. It's delicate and understated, but demonstrates remarkable complexity as Wallace mixes ambient tones with subtle, rhythmic soundbites emanating from his violin. I wish more chillwave was like this. The EP is only four tracks, but you can get other singles as well. Be sure to check out Spend This Day (highly recommended), and Delicate Position , which is a collaboration with Sea Oleena (who has managed to [...]

In the spirit of full disclosure, I learned about Guilty Ghosts through a tweet about a new release, Everlasting Evening . Guilty Ghosts is the pseudonym for Brooklyn-based artist, Tristan O'Donnell. I did some background work and found that he released a self-titled long player last year; it is a post rock, instrumental album. The 2010 release features meditative pieces full of ambient soundscapes and drone. Everlasting Evening is more of the same, but polished and there's a bit toward the middle where Sea Oleena contributes vocals. It's [...]

I've got to give out a shout to our reader James for bringing this wonderful track to my attention. Sea Oleena is Canadian songwriter Charlotte Oleena, who composed the songs for her most recent self-titled album with the help of her brother. It's got this dream quality to it, but more in that wooded dream as opposed to the more dense dream-pop of late. Something about Oleena's voice really draws you into her songs, encouraging you to devour every last second of the record. You can grab the album for the special "name your [...]

Sea Oleena's epically beautiful Sleeplessness is already one of my favourite records of this year, criminally underrated and immeasurably elegant. So when I found out Charlotte was collaborating with Felix Green , her brother and also producer of the aforementioned album, on a project entitled Holobody, my expectations couldn't have been much higher. Released a couple of days ago, the nine tracks that form Riverhood are a fascinating blend of hip hop beats, folk inspired vocals and genuinely adorable songwriting. [...]

"Sea Oleena is the sudden rush of inspiration. The long anticipated conclusion. The layer of dust on the bookshelf. The missed flight. The memorized view from a window. The [...]

Reposted w/ individual mp3s (in case you don't want the whole mix): Clif started the Something for Later mixes as an outlet for longer or more subdued musical pieces, and they were initially posted on the now defunct Paper Crane Collective blog site. I decided to take up the project but refocus on experimental rock, avant garde pop, freak folk, and electronic music. Volume 3 compiles track from the mostly the first half of 2011: Something for Later Vol. 3 - 2011 [click to download ZIP file] [...]

I think you're going to like the July mix. It's upbeat, it's fun, and it's just oozing with joie de vivre . In fact, I hope you'll forgive us if we've been acting a little overly giddy recently, but life has been good to us. First, after months of planning, we finally announced the launch of Turntable Kitchen's Pairings Box which will allow us to bring you extremely-limited vinyl 73 singles (by some of the very bands you've been hearing on these monthly mixtapes), exclusive recipes, hand-curated digital mixtapes, and premium dry-food ingredients straight to [...]

The self-titled album from Sea Oleena emerges delicate and ethereal in its aesthetics, but upon closer listen reveals to be mired in a drunken, anti-dream purgatory. Charlotte Oleena describes the album as "three seasons' worth of endless nights and half-lived days". The opening track 'Southbound' displays a pulsating warble akin to Wilco 's 'I am Trying to Break Your Heart', but gravitates towards unease rather than self-pity. Mrs. Oleena sings: I read the Book of the Dead backwards, and then I made my way to someone with a name-tag for directions to a [...]
Emotive pop rock has seemingly gone by the wayside. The singer-songwriter moniker often makes the music-blogger in me cringe. That being said I was always a fan of folks like Ben Kweller and Josh... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Bridgetown Records is one of those wonderful labels quietly putting out release after release covering a whole range of styles and genres from psych to ambient to experimental, and pretty much all points in between. They've been in touch to remind us there are 15 new releases on Bridgetown, including the label's first DVD, and a video album by Former Selves . The rest of the albums are by Vehicle Blues , Kevin Greenspon , Sea Oleena , Jon Barba , Chicken Sandwich , Grizzel Toe/Hermit Convention , Sundrips [...]
