This band could be your life. Working the aesthetics of '80s blue collar punk rock, The Garrison's meat-and-potatoes snarl is reflective of the scene in which they play. Originally lumped in with the unfortunately christened "grunge" movement, Tacoma, Washington's Seaweed were really just a gritty pop-punk band that rose to prominence with a seemingly endless arsenal of memorable hooks and raucous riffs. Using Sub Pop as a springboard to the majors on the backs of two stellar LP's ( Weak and Four , respectively), Seaweed signed with Hollywood Records in 1995. Back then signing to a major label carried quite a bit more stigma than it seems to now, but Seaweed weathered the storm musically, as the resulting Spanaway album did little to diminish the band's [...]

As I left work on Wednesday, before the school shut down for winter break, I was reminded that all electricity would be turned off. This meant one last visit to the team refrigerator. There was a lot of vegetarian food in the freezer, from when my co-worker's son gave up on his vegetarian diet and she donated it to me, and a bag of apples in the fridge. "Radio show host John Peel is known for his great taste in music and open forum for musicians to showcase their music. This compilation of Sub Pop artists performing songs on his British radio program is a great example of the strong performances he can get in his studio setting. Mudhoney starts with the magnificent "By Her Own Hand," a dark suicide anthem performed powerfully under the live setting.
