FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 Before the term "indie rock" entered the cultural lexicon—and subsequently came to include so many different types of music that it had to be broken down into countless sub-genres—it actually served as an adequate descriptor for a very specific sound. In the early '90s, you wouldn't have had to string together a series of seemingly random words (like, say, "lo-fi/post-garage slacker-rock") to describe a band like Pavement . No, "indie rock" would do just fine. Today—more than 10 years after rising tensions within the band led to its slow, painful [...]
100Bands Poll: Choose A Band! If you are an avid concert goer like us, then you are familiar with those unfortunate times when two bands you want to see live are playing at different venues on the same day. In some cases it is an easy choice, but other times when you have an equal interest in both bands, it can be downright impossible to choose one. Riddled with indecision, I am asking [...]

Continuing the surge of experimental-pop from Montreal, Pop Winds excel in diverging colorful psychedelia and indie-rock to create a sound that is familiarly addictive, yet still relatively incomparable. On "Owl Eyes", the duo's vocals combine for multiple harmonies over squirts of brass and synth arpeggios, the wide variety of synths sliding and squirming all over [...]

The classic elements are deeply rooted in many philosophies and worldviews. For example, to the Babylonians these elements were sea, sky, earth, and wind, to the greeks the elements were air, water, earth, and fire, and to the Chinese they were wind, metal, fire, water, and earth. For today's playlist, we will be adapting a classic element set familiar to most of us: Earth , Wind , Fire and Water . Now before I dive into the playlist, which [...]
So much goodness this week. Starting off on the perfect summer slo-jam, a fat-syrupy beat from Room E . Then a waltzy, breathy lil' ditty from LA's Evan Voytas . A tune from the new Ra Ra Riot you can pre-order now. A live track from Sea Wolf that's so autumnlike, it's perfect for these SF summers. Finally, the best band with the best band name of the week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. . Enjoy thoroughly. • • • • Room E "Glasses Girl" from Palms Together [...]

Got a note in my inbox from Sea Wolf today, and it went like this... Dear Friends, I'm am happy to announce the first-ever Sea Wolf solo acoustic tour! I will be packing up my suitcase and guitar and traveling to your town to serenade you with Sea Wolf songs (and a few extras) as you've never heard them before. Joining me on the tour will be two of my favorite artists and friends, Sera Cahoone and Patrick Park . Also, my label will [...]

I know it's out of the ordinary to write about a concert that's not for months in the future but the fact of the matter is that this one deserves your attention. On September 26th, Sea Wolf will be hitting Chicago again, following up his fantastic sold out gig last summer at Schubas with a set at sister venue Lincoln Hall. What makes this special, however, is the fact that the whole set will be Alex Brown Church all by his lonesome, just him and his acoustic guitar. To [...]
Top 4 post-NBA Finals excursions that don't involve hooliganism: ☛ When Alex Brown Church launched his Sea Wolf project in 2007, I was struck by how similar his aesthetic was to one of my longtime favorites, Matt Pond PA . After hearing Pond's eighth album, I'm convinced there ought to be some indie-folk cage match. Or maybe their respective string players can fence with their bows. Pond's new album, released in April, is titled "The Dark Leaves" (Sea Wolf's first album was titled "Leaves in the River"), and it finds the New York-based [...]

The really really popular indie acoustic songs (we're talking anthems like " First Day of My Life ", "Hey There Delilah", " Neopolitan Dreams " and sweet things just so) usually posess down to earth and realistic lyrics that manage to keep a distinct 'indie' appeal through slightly metaphorical/analogical/poetic language. I hate thinking about songs mathematically. A mathmatical expression is effectively a cliche in the way it generalises many different circumstances and certain numbers to one simple rule of procedure. Our fashionable will to generalise other humans/objects in order to feel superior results in the hollow and unpleasant feeling that everyone hates everyone . I mean 'hate' of course in [...]
