seafarer Three I-hate-to-see-you-leave-but-I- love-to-watch-you-go reasons to skip on down to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. I hate farewells; they're so final. But, alas, tonight we must say goodbye to Chicago quartet Seafarer . The group quickly became known for its endearing approach to indie rock with just enough folk not to be annoying and a decent blend of both crunch and melody that lands somewhere between angsty Pavement and country-fried Pavement. Seafarer, we hardly knew ye. [...]

It has come to my attention that this is our 100th Weekend Diversion. What can I say? We just love searching high and low for all the best shows this damn fine city has to offer. And, boy, does it ever offer. We've got another packed weekend ahead of us with Seafarer and House of Normandie each headlining one night of two back-to-back shows sponsored by ourselves and Betta Promotions at Lincoln Hall and Schubas. This weekend also marks the very welcomed return of HoZac Record 's Blackout Fest going down this [...]

Howdy, Chicago! Our good friends over at Betta Promotions are throwing two shindigs at Lincoln Hall and Schubas to celebrate its fourth anniversary in our fair city and we're proud to be a sponsor. The shows kick off this Saturday, May 28, with alternative psych-rockers Seafarer headlining at Lincoln Hall and wraps on Sunday, May 29, at Schubas with what promises to be a intense show by rockers House of Normandie . Make sure you are already signed up [...]

Late last month, Chicago's Seafarer put out a new, and quite awesome, two-song 73 . One song on the aforementioned record is, "Cave," (not to be confused with the band CAVE ), and it's a track that we really, really dig, so we thought we'd clue you in on it too. What makes Seafarer such an intoxicating listen if that their approach to indie rock has quite the kick. "Cave" opens with clean picking until 30 seconds in when beefy, but not fuzzy, guitar interrupts with a [...]

Last month Chicago's Seafarer re-released their self-titled seven song EP, Hiding Places . I like this one because it is not boring and there's a single mindedness that is well appreciated. Beyond all that Hiding Places keeps the attention with movement ranging from engaged immediacy to springy off the rails flights of exploration. Listen to the songs below for your own decision making. Illustration by Johnnie Cluney While Loud Loop Press staffers hungrily gorged themselves on Tofurky this past holiday season, several Chicago artists decided to rock the hell out of Daytrotter . Roots rocker Judson Claiborne , indie poppers Unicycle Loves You , new wavers California Wives and folk poppers Seafarer all recently recorded a live set for the Rock Island-based website. Pop rocking trio Unicycle Loves You unveiled a groovy, previously unreleased jam titled "Golden Girls" along with [...]
New Artist Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore's path toward the formation of Tennis is an inspiring tale. Dreaming of a life on the sea, the Denver-ite lovers set their minds towards purchasing a sail boat and made it happen through years of saving. The self taught sailors embarked on a 7 month journey up the [...]

Our favourite lo-fi couple, Tennis, have a new track for us today with the retro head-nodder 'Seafarer'. The adorable track takes obvious inspirations from the duos adventures at sea. Check out our interview with and Alaina and Patrick - here - to gain further insight into one of the best newcomers of 2010 , and some slow peoples (jokes) tip for 2011. [...]

Admittedly, I didn't even know about Seafarer until last week. The Chicago quartet has been around for two years and in that time has independently released only a handful of songs. The band released its debut EP Hiding Places back in May, but garnered little attention. And now, the foursome is getting ready to re-release the EP this winter in hopes of attracting a larger audience this time around. It's a good strategy, because the album – with its warm, drowsy feel - is really best served with a frosty Chicago winter. [...]

And now three still-can't-believe-I-went-out side-in-short-sleeves-yesterda y reasons to enjoy this weather while it lasts and shimmy on over to The Whistler this evening... 1. We'd just like to go ahead and say this is UsUs Calypso's final show...sort of. See, this is actually the band's first show, and they didn't have a name yet. So the pseudo name UsUs Calypso was born, but after tonight's show their official name is Males and Females . But enough about names, the band is comprised of psychedelic singer-songwriter Dylan Kloska , Chaperone 's Shaun Paul, [...]
In the crazy ass world known as the music industry, the week immediately following CMJ is basically the most overwhelming five days of any blogger's life. That's because all the publicists who stepped away from the office to party work at CMJ are now back in said office, catching up on their work and consequently sending 1,732 emails. The goods new for you guys, of course, is that all these emails mean tons of new mp3s to include in this week's Friday mixtape. So please enjoy this haul of free music. We're going to go sleep. Seafarer From: Chicago, Illinois, United States Chicago's Seafarer have fully embraced the craft of being dissimilar and still, engrossingly gripping . Noise Floor is relatively straightforward and a little reminiscent of Cold War Kids . But it's with the mercurial, unquantifiable ' The Archipelago ' that Seafarer let loose. It like a kaleidoscope cracking open unleashing an ear bending goulash of sounds. Is it rock, is it folk, is it psych, is it pop. Well yes, yes, yes and yes. The [...]
After a triumphant 2010, that included the release of their acclaimed debut LP, Weathervanes, Queen's popular indie band, The Freelance Whales, are keeping fans engaged into the waning months of 2010 with a new song, "Enzymes." At first, it doesn't really sound like the FW; the sound is more heavily infused with an indie pop [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

photo by Mark Hopkins Three and-that's-a-wrap-on-August-20 10 reasons to pogo on over to the Subterranean tonight... 1. Chicago's Community College headline with their brand of grandiose, instrumental post-rock that follows bands such as Explosions In The Sky and Sweep The Leg Johnny. Alongside Community College's gritty, power riffs are a few indie-rock tinged moments complete with floating synthesizer lines and some mathy breakdowns. The band focuses less on true loud-quiet-loud dynamics, which is often a crutch for instrumental rockers. Instead, their changes seem to occur more organically, and that just makes their [...]
Late night surprises are extremely rare (at least the good ones anyway), but I got one in the wee small hours of this morning. In my Direct Messages on Twitter was a message from the dude who runs The Leaving Scene linking me to a new Tennis track. It's the B-side to their just-released 73 single "South Carolina" that he got yesterday afternoon, so he ripped it and upped it, and for some reason sent it to me. I'm a huge Tennis fan if you weren't aware so maybe that's why, or maybe it's "for being [...]

We've featured Seafar a couple of times on here now- first with his excellent album " Hegira ", and then with the brilliant " Electric Space Musik Vol.1 " mix.
