Summer is the perfect time for indiepop. It's the perfect genre to counterbalance all those sunshine-sweet girlband tunes that fill the airwaves. Oh and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry too. Sean Bones is set to release Rings at the highpoint of summer on July 21st (a month too late for summer solstice, but July is usually warmer anyhow, right?). When someone told me that the bass player in Sam Champion started a reggae band, I was instantly intrigued. I listened to a few tracks and was sufficiently curious to drag myself out to Mercury Lounge on this gross, rainy Thursday. The music is a kind of cool combination of reggae and rock. Sean Bones has been keeping busy. As you may or may not have heard, he recently wrapped his first feature film Wah Do Dem , in which he plays the lead character Max who gets dumped by Norah Jones shortly before a Caribbean holiday. Rachel Ray sort of scares me. I can't fully explain why, maybe there's just something about all the Food Network personalities that just irk me the wrong way (and they all do, by the way). When Ray transformed from TV chef to indie music hipster, it made my fear worse. She started getting into shows at SXSW and in NYC--using the name "Feedback."
