Sean Carey (whose going by S. Carey) is the percussionist in Bon Iver. He is gearing up his own solo debut, All We Grow , set for release on August 24th via Jagjaguwar . He will open for The Tallest Man on Earth starting this September. For now enjoy the first single from his album, "In The Dirt". It's a soulful song that certainly carries over some of the emotion from Bon Iver. The song is very pretty. I'm impressed Mr. Carey. [mp3]: S. Carey - In The Dirt [...]

Julia Mård You can probably scientifically and quantitatively prove that there is nothing fresh or original about what Swede Kristian Matsson does under his stage name of The Tallest Man On Earth . He's a folk-oriented singer-songwriter who's armed with just an acoustic guitar and a raspy, Dylan-ish twang and in those terms, is indistinguishable from an infinite number of performers in coffee houses around the world at any given moment in time. What sets Matsson above and apart is something more ineffable; a fine sense of melody, deft guitarwork and evocative turn of phrase, certainly, [...]

While most albums easily reflect the sum of their parts, Sean Carey 's remarkable and audacious debut album All We Grow (August 24, Jagjaguwar ) goes lightyears beyond that common adage. Best known as the drummer and pianist for Justin Vernon's Bon Iver , Carey goes way beyond what might be construed as singer/songwriter territory for his tightly woven and abstract-centered songs, bringing in his classically trained and jazz driven percussive skills and admiration for modern minimalists such as Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. Melodies drift above densely constructed strata of [...]

Over the past couple of years, few artists have managed to create music as stunningly moving as Wisconsin natives Bon Iver. Their 2008 debut record For Emma, Forever Ago was the result of frontman Justin Vernon's cathartic winter in solitude, from which his masterful and heartfelt release formed. While Bon Iver have recently taken a well-deserved break from touring and, the time off has allowed Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey to start his own side project, S. Carey, as well as release his first album All We Grow . [...]

If you are a fan of Bon Iver , then perhaps you will be inclined to fall for the charms of S. Carey. For Sean Carey has been a member of Bon Iver from the beginning, providing important and relevant percussion and is now set to release his debut solo album. "All We Grow" will be released on Jagjaguwar on August 24. Containing 9 tracks the album was recorded at Carey's home and also at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio in Wisconsin). The first available song for download is a good sign that this will [...]

don't despair, don't you dare ♫ S. Carey - In The Dirt That beautiful album photo on the right is the cover to Sean Carey's debut LP, All We Grow, which will be out in September. You have never heard of S. Carey before but you have definitely heard him. A long time buddy of Justin Vernon (and also hailing from Eau Claire, Wisconsin) he has been Bon Iver's drummer ever since there was a full band to drum in. Carey is now setting out on [...]

Ever heard of Sean Carey ? If not, you may be familiar with the band Bon Iver. Certainly best known for singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, Bon Iver also consists of Sean Carey, Michael Noyce, and Matthew McCaughan. The reason I bring this up is because band mate S. Carey has just released the first single from his debut album All We Grow , set to hit shelves (or iTunes for most) in late August. His first single titled "In the Dirt" is a wonderful debut to what is sure to be an astounding [...]

Now that Bon Iver 's Justin Vernon is seems extremely busy collaborating in rather strange, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony inspired neo-soul Minneapolis all-star projects or almost equally weird garage-blues duos (and let's not forget last year's splendid experimental endeavours ), his bandmates appear to have found some spare time at last. Bon Iver's percussionist/pianist Sean Carey has taken that sudden opportunity in the most fruitful way, recording an album under his own name. And the smooth vigour of Carey's debuting song In the Dirt shows an astonishing amount of songwriting talent and [...]
This week was one of those weeks that's puts things into context. Covering music is a bitch. Between Sasquatch! , Arcade Fire , Belle & Sebastian , The National , Smashing Pumpkins , and all the festival lineup announcements , I think I speak for everyone here at CoS when I say we're a bit tired. And that's even after a four-day work week. So, while we catch our breath, use this time to check out the following mix of music's best new singles, covers, and remixes, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you [...]
Sean Carey is a founding member of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver and the impact of this experience is undeniable. Although, perhaps, Carey's union with Vernon devolves into chicken-or-egg logic. Did Vernon influence Carey or was Carey drawn to Vernon by common style? I would bear this out further but I suspect neither of us has the time. On debut album, We All Grow, Carey features the sparse and

You're probably going to get your song heard here if it says that you're a musician who performs in Justin Vernon's band Bon Iver . This track (below) comes from the debut album from S. Carey called All We Grow and is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. The album is a part Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies and part traditional rock band experience, also retesting "the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich." He'd write these songs while [...]

The Buzz Box #6 features the new single from Kanye West, plus some new (fantastic) music from rising acts Bodies of Water, Suckers, and recently P4K approved Wild Nothing. Also included is a Paul Simon cover from The Tallest Man On Earth, who at least impressed my (musically picky) roommates at this past weekend's Sasquatch Music Festival. Enjoy: The Tallest Man On Earth :: Graceland (Paul Simon Cover) Kanye West :: Power Bodies of Water :: Rise Up, Careful Suckers [...]

There are some emails that immediately pique my interest. The first kind are those that I keep getting from Minnie Mouse asking me if we could hook up. I don't answer these, mind you... I just put them in a folder called "To be used when you're REALLY frikkin' horny" because A) Mickey's my bro and I can't do that to him and B) I know that Donald Duck's been wanting to tap that and I can't do that to Donald. The second of these emails are the ones that include the words [...]
Did you know that Bon Iver isn't just Justin Vernon ? Sure, the Wisconsin-born singer is the heart and soul, not to mention the mastermind, behind hits like For Emma, Forever Ago , but he can't do it without his backing band. And if you thought Vernon was the only member capable of sustaining a solo career, think again. S. Carey, the guy who plays drums and piano and provides back-up vocals, is about to release his own solo album entitled All We Grow . While Bon Iver's been taking [...]
