Tweet Clean White Lines , a local video and film company, is attempting the unexpected: to make a documentary about Muffler Men , those big fiberglass sculptures used to promote roadside businesses. In order to create this film, the company needs an RV, and is currently raising funds to help purchase a used model. Bart Davenport , Dreamdate (acoustic), Anna and Spencer of Spencey Dude and the Doodles , and Sean Hayes have all [...]
Time for a confession: I am a sucker for acoustic folk music. I grew up listening to Bob Dylan, and a nice, full-sounding guitar brings back memories of summer evenings spent lying on my bed listening to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" on repeat. Justin Vernon and the talented Samuel Beam (better known as Iron & Wine) have a very special place in my heart that's hard to replace... but after a few listens of Chris Bathgate's Salt Year I can say without hesitation that he's moving up in the ranks of my favorite folk artists. [...]

Editor's Note: The 2010 music scene was actually one of my favorites in a long time. While some saw a slow year with nothing eventful happening, I saw a hip-hop artist reveal himself as a human (K. West), an Icelandic superstar create something magical on his own (Jonsi), and a band that reached the highest of expectations (Arcade Fire), plus a plethora of Bay Area bands that expanded the scene's already blooming hype machine (Weekend, Judgement Day, Grand Lake, Morning Benders, Sean Hayes, Sonny & The Sunsets, Il Gato, Sleepy Sun, The Limousines, etc). [...]

25. The Books – The Way Out Vastly experimental on all levels and as usual, admirable to no end. The Books did it again with The Way Out , while still a bit more accessible than their last few records, this album dives deep into the art of sampling and multi-instrumentation. It's a mathematical achievement and another masterpiece by this bizarre and humorous group. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] [mp3] The Books - Beautiful People from The Way Out (2010) [...]

The uninitiated might find the whole thing a little perplexing. Fingerbanger 1 : Chinese Man Records - Indi Groove (don lowed) -- Fingerbanger 1.5 : Chinese Man Records - I've Got That Tune (don lowed) -- I've always left the Bon Iver posting to others. But I'm going to concede this time and wave my white flag. Rerub, remix, retickle, reticent, rectified, repartee, whatever... Fingerbanger 2 : Bon Iver - Skinny Love (Das [...]
I know that it's pretty rainy out here in the Bay Area, and also very cold, so going to shows is a tough thing to do, but I think that these options are worth braving the elements! Thursday, December 9th The Temper Trap, Sleigh Bells, The Limousines, A Silent Film (Club NSSN; Live 105) at [...]

Electric Skychurch I am new to Electric Skychurch, although they have been around quite a while. The band is an electronic or acid trance group based in Los Angeles, California. It was formed in 1991 by composer and producer James Lumb, who initially involved vocalist Roxanne Morganstern and percussionist Alex Spurkel in the project. [...]

designed by Chris Thornley It’s our fourth Snob Theater and in case you haven't heard, this month's line-up is borderline epic. In case you’re not familiar with Snob Theater. Snob Theater is a show that features the best in the Bay Area’s indie rock bands and stand-up comedians. The small 50+ seat Dark Room Theater makes for the most intimate of performances and provides a unique and exciting atmosphere. Snob Theater is an event that showcases the comfort of the performers as they take chances in a stripped-down setting. Our musical guests [...]
A sampling of a Broadway hit. Broadway theatre - Arts - David Lindsay-Abaire - Frances McDormand - Academy Award
If you aren't familiar with the latest uproar which involves Kristin Chenoweth , Sean Hayes , Jonathan Groff , and " Newsweek " writer Ramin Setoodeh , I'd like you to take a moment to catch yourself up since you've obviously been in a martini-induced coma the past week. Setoodeh wrote an article titled " Straight Jacket ." The subtitle of the article is " Heterosexual actors play gay all the time. Why doesn't it ever work in reverse? " The article kicks off by discussing the Broadway revival of " Promises, Promises " which stars [...]
