South by Southwest kicks off today, and I'm still in Portland. Tragic! To console myself, I'm posting four mp3s at once from bands at this year's festival. Jason Collett "Out of Time" (mp3) Sean Hayes "Flowering Spade" (mp3) The Wedding...

hey, gang, just a few additional points to add to the part 1 write up: obviously there have been too many bands involved in each of these posts to give each the deserved attention within the confines of this particular project; that said, many if not all do warrant - and likely will someday receive, fingers crossed and all that jazz - their own posts. in the meantime, consider yourselves officially encouraged to visit the bands' websites or to nose around in the archives of this site , which does a better job keeping us [...]

Sometimes you get hooked on songs that aren't hot off the press. They're not the latest craze or super popular download of the day; no, they've been around the block a couple of times and, quite honestly, have been overlooked. Sean Hayes really got my attention with some great singles I heard here and there. I quickly purchased a ton of his music but never gave it a full-on listen, then one day "Rattlesnake Charm (Dream machine)" came on by random occurrence. I didn't know about the song, I'd never heard it before but on the [...]

Tonight MoB favorite Sean Hayes plays Shank Hall in Milwaukee along with Jenny Owen Youngs . Last year Sean Hayes Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star made our best albums of 2006 list . This year, he's released an equally fantastic offering with Flowering Spade . We caught up with Sean prior to tonight's show for our continuing 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature. Could you lend [...]
Random Thought #6 - Has anyone seen that commercial where this father buys a buttload of Domino's pizza for dinner and the mother walks in and says, "(Gasp) I love you!" That's complete bullshit. When I went out to school in San Francisco, Katie and I went to see folk-jazz singer-songwriter Jolie Holland in her native town. What we did not expect was the opener, Sean Hayes . We were not even paying attention to any of the acts until he took [...]

With acoustic strings, gentle drums and layers of vocals and horns, Flowering Spade is far from daring but lovely in every way, like a stripped-down Sufjan Stevens.

I gotta start stocking up on my new favorite food========================== ============================== ========= glisten: walkie talkie Time for my weekly round-up of Pub interviews; those of you somewhat in the dark as to what this is all about are welcome to get all the details in the first of these posts here. I wasn't able to connect with too many people this week, but there is a little
Sean Hayes ' music may remind you of Jack Johnson's and on the surface you'd be correct but from what I've heard this is on a wholly different emotional plane. This is not content to be background music for a dinner party or the soundtrack to a kid's movie. While quiet these songs are still busting out at the seams. They're the type that are hard to ignore and harder still turn off. Sean Hayes has been building a rabid and loyal fanbase for several years in and around San Francisco. When I had [...]

We're heading to the airport to take in South By Southwest in Austin, TX. Tomorrow we'll begin our daily coverage, so make sure to check back frequently throughout the day for our updates/ramblings about the music, free beer, and bbq. Please check out the SXSW related Q&A I did with Madison.com today. In addition to that, I wrote a piece about my desire to have a smaller scale music festival here in Madison someday. Here's some MP3's of bands on the top of my list to see while [...]
