I have been meaning to post these two mixes for awhile! These are two separate mixes from two friends of mine, and they are more or less on opposite ends on the EDM spectrum. Johnny Ianniello 's mix was recorded live from when he played at District 36 in NYC on 12/22/11, which is one of the best clubs in the city. The mix flows quite nicely, starting with some housey vocal tracks while tastefully incorporating some of his own bootlegs and remixes. Also, any mix that throws in Alex Kenji & Thomas Gold's banger 'What's Up' with Mescal [...]

It's Rock Make Street Festival's 4th annual event and what an event it'll be. Many respected local and kids' rock bands along with over 100 local arts and crafts vendors and food from local vendors. I was a big fan of last year's show and this one has the likes of Tartufi, Battlehooch, Birds & Batteries, Bare Wires, Phantom Kicks, James and Evander, Cannons & Clouds, Sean Smith, ChuCha Santamaria Y Usted, Mist Giant, Vons De Qua and the SF Rock Project's House Band . The event is taking place on Saturday, September [...]

Huge Fluid Freedom by Sean Smith The shocking image above is the album cover for Huge Fluid Freedom , the latest record from local guitar virtuoso Sean Smith . Smith might be best known for his skill as a steel string performer, or as a former member of Citay (who performed on the band's Dream Get Together album), but, as you can hear above, his new Tim Green-produced album mixes acoustic and electric elements for an expansive, experimental sound. Huge Fluid [...]

It was another great year in music. Again, like last year, I can't understand those who insists that 'nothing good happened in 20102, annoying hipsters. It was such a diverse year, full of brilliant gems. I won't go into charts and numbering, but here's a rough overview of the stuff I liked this year. Some of the [...]

Sean Smith is an excellent guitarist and a visionary composer, in the field of steel-string guitar music. He proved it over the years with several releases, though his talent was exposed to the world much thanks to the fantastic Tompkins Square compilation Berkley Guitar (this year they released the sequel - Beyond The Berkly Guitar). In both [...]

Berkeley Guitar was released back in 2006 as a celebration of the guitar. 2010 is the time for Beyond Berkeley Guitar , the next step in appreciating the guitar for its history and seemingly endless capacity for nuance. This new release, out now on Tompkins Square , will be celebrated on 6/29/10 at Amnesia (9:00 pm, $7): As a follow up to 2006's release, Berkeley Guitar, we are excited to host the CD release of Beyond Berkeley Guitar, a compilation of guitar creations, put together and produced by talented local [...]

It's a tough weekend to avoid the BlueSix: two solid and almost entirely native back-to-back lineups. Administering massive psych jams is 3 Leafs , who has many times been undeniably named a supergroup including members of Horn of Dagoth , Black Fiction , Tussle and Citay . They're joined on Saturday (9pm) by Birds & Batteries , Sean Smith and Spencer Owen (Smith plays guitar for Citay), and Tony Dryer . [...]

The Fat Cat Records label is a Brighton, England institution; they have signed highly divergent, up and coming acts from across the globe, from Sigur Rós to Vetiver , from Frightened Rabbit to Vashti Bunyan . So I took much delight in hearing that the label was sending several of their signings over to North America for a tour. For the Washington date, the three acts being featured at the Black Cat were the Scottish bands We Were Promised Jetpacks and [...]
[Locals Only is a regular feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.] This week boasts several unique events: Mark Eitzel performing American Music Club at the Red Devil Lounge, a BYOB rock show at Flux53 in Oakland (presented by our buds over at Kata Rokkar), the Proclaimers (!) at Bottom of [...]

Last year was a good one for Thao Nguyen. She and her band, The Get Down Stay Down, released their first album for Kill Rock Stars. We Brave Bee Stings and All , which was TWSIS's #1 album of 2008 , was met with strong praise. The band spent a good portion of the year on tour. And Thao played last year's Noise Pop festival. This year, she was invited back to Noise Pop as a headliner at the Swedish American Music [...]
