ALBUMS - Autumn Releases 2008 words: Charlie Ralph 2008 has given us many great albums over the past seven and a half months. Everything ranging from the beautifully poetic Elbow album 'The Seldom Seen Kid' to the electronic, opinion-splitting masterpiece of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut have been given to the music-loving public since the year began. So, surely now is the time for the music steam train to wind down and spit out some cheesy Greatest Hits of The Ting Tings compilation in [...]

Well here I am, my own little corner of the web, somewhere to force my opinions on anyone who cares to swing by. Just to outline, I know that there are countless reams of music blogs around the place, but I just want to throw my hat in and get all my kind of music in one place. So, how to begin? Well this is the first post, and in the most tenuous way, this is a marriage of the web with my taste in music, so lets spin that analogy out for as long as we can shall we? [...]
So I'm sure you've all heard about Amy Winehouse and her fan punching and Jay-Z and his Noel Gallagher punching (not literally) in fact you may have even seen more bands than I did on BBC but nothing compares to the experience of being there. I guarantee you that no matter what festivals you have been to in the world you have never seen anything to equal the size of the daddy of them all. You know what's cooler than listening to a cd in your car? Having the actual artist playing in the back seat! At least, that's the premise of the Black Cab Sessions . A website that pretty much does what it says on the tin. A modern updating of field recordings . A musician sits in the back of a black cab and plays one of their songs while being driven around. Some music takes you on a metaphorical journey. These sessions take you on a very literal one. The world passes by outside the [...]
You can't fake authenticity. You can't buy it either. But hot damn if you can't market it. This time last year, who knows where Seasick Steve was. Unwanted in his own country and unknown in this one, it took a show stealing perfomance on the Later Hootenanny to not so much save his career, as semmingly give him one. Since then, he's played more gigs, done more festival appearances and been in more magazines than a marketeer could shake a demograph at. But it makes you wonder, what makes Seasick [...]
There's been a bit of a flurry of posts today, mainly because I'm getting things out of the way before heading off, so this will be the last post for the best part of two weeks. I'm going on holiday to Dorset, the first part of which will be spent at the second End of the Road Festival . Festival attendances this year have been non-existent for me, due to the arrival of the Baby Growl in June, but now she's just about old enough to appreciate her first festival (I think) and anyway if I had [...]

One of the most disappointing aspects of Glastonbury was missing Seasick Steve . Especially as I later found out he did three sets on various days at different parts of the site. Thankfully, I've just found out that he's touring the UK and is calling round my way in October. So hopefully, all being well, I'll finally get to see him. Something I'm very excited by as I've been told that he's very intense live and really does summon up a feeling of authentic blues. As this live track from backstage at Glastonbury [...]

My memory is seriously bad. So bad I can't actually remember how bad it is. Well not quite. But tonight's post was supposed to be posted earlier in the month. But I forgot. I could blame it on any number of things but it's mainly just down to my forgetfulness. But once you've had a listen, I thnk you'll be glad I finally remembered. Just after New Year I caught a repeat showing of the Later with Jools Holland Hootenanny and in amongst the drivel, the drab and the downright [...]

It's 2007! And I feel like shit, appropriately enough. I think I've picked up a wonderfully ambitious cold, and dragged it all the way back to Berlin with me. So, understandably, I've got the blues. And this New Year's Eve I heard music from Seasick Steve , and wouldn't you know it, he's got the blues too, but his blues are related to getting kicked out of the family home, and playing string-deficient guitars. And his blues moan about themselves from the inside out, and grip his fingers and riff on his dirty fuzzed-up strings, E/G/A and repeat, and [...]
