The festival that's become an electronic music pilgrimage has just released phase 3 of its massive lineup! Detroit's Movement Festival is arguably the most important in the Eastern Hemisphere, possibly in the world, and this portion of the lineup solidifies the gravity of the event. Influential producers Cajmere and Squarepusher are must-sees, as are seasoned DJs like Bill Patrick and Francois K that symbolize all that is forward-thinking in music today. Berlin techno gets an extra push with an appearance by Deadbeat , Chuck Daniels rounds out a strong Detroit [...]

At around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning, the official Fun Fun Fun Fest app sent a push notification, which is weird because usually there are two things that happen that late over cell phones: emergencies or regrettable judgment calls. I guess you could say this was both. It read , "Hey girl can I com over? I been drinkin bout you. Hollr." It's one of the best booty-texts I've heard in a minute - and it went out to thousands of people. If it was real, that's awesome. I hope that guy/girl found love in a [...]

Nirvana photo courtesy of Sub Pop Perhaps no other day marks Seattle music history like April 5. Eighteen years ago today, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain took his life. Eight years later, on April 5, Alice in Chains' Layne Staley died from a drug overdose. But also on April 5, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready was born. (AIC's original bassist Mike Starr was born a day earlier.) So what better day to celebrate local music, particularly the era that made Seattle in/famous? On the Morning Show, John Richards is spinning all Seattle music, and you'll no doubt hear [...]
"We made a loud, fuzzy rock album. Did we finish it?"

Kind of depressing. Deleted numerous mails yesterday only to find 52 new ones when logging in this morning...a vicious circle if there ever was one...but here we go again... + Sea Weeds - Fall Boi ...to be continued...

This band could be your life. Working the aesthetics of '80s blue collar punk rock, The Garrison's meat-and-potatoes snarl is reflective of the scene in which they play. For every Josh Krajcik/singer-songwriter opting for the open mic nights at clubs like Woodlands and Rumba Cafe, there's a half dozen noisy, guitar-rockers pounding out music that inspires fist-pumping and slam dancing in venues that require hazmat suits to enter the bathrooms. MP3: The Garrison - "Greely Chapel" Like thrash metal, there's a certain timeless [...]
With Walter Schreifels continuously looking forward (with Rival Schools and other solo projects) rather than revisiting the past (Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand), I'm always on the lookout for post-hardcore bands that sound like 1994. While Schreifels might not be interested in making that kind of music anymore, it's not stopping him from working with bands that do. The singer recently worked with Pennsylvania's Title Fight and produced their debut album, Shed , which is a great slice of aggressive guitar work and nearly barked vocals that still maintain a [...]

MAGNET Magazine is streaming the new 7-inch from Seaweed . Service Deck/The Weight marks the group's first new material in 13 years, and it's due out July 4, 2011 via No Idea . Check it out here .
Four years ago, Seaweed reunited to play the annual No Idea Records festival. While that was cool enough for the band's many fans, we all wanted more. There was talk of Seaweed making a new album, but nothing ever materialized. Until now. On July 4, No Idea is issuing the "Service Deck"/"The Weight" seven-inch, the [...]

Originally lumped in with the unfortunately christened "grunge" movement, Tacoma, Washington's Seaweed were really just a gritty pop-punk band that rose to prominence with a seemingly endless arsenal of memorable hooks and raucous riffs. Using Sub Pop as a springboard to the majors on the backs of two stellar LP's ( Weak and Four , respectively), Seaweed signed with Hollywood Records in 1995. Back then signing to a major label carried quite a bit more stigma than it seems to now, but Seaweed weathered the storm musically, as the resulting Spanaway album did little to diminish the band's [...]
Seaweed will be releasing a new two-song 7-inch, Service Deck / The Weight , in July via No Idea Records . Check out the cover art at its release page . The band hasn't issued new material in some time, with their last full-length being 1998's Actions and Indications , released via Merge Records .

setlist photo courtesy of Mark Cyst Seaweed played their first NYC show in over a decade at the Bell House in Brooklyn on Friday, April 22, 2011. One fan wrote , "...Needless to say the show was one for the ages. Honestly there was not a sad face in the entire crowd. Complete strangers became best friends while packed in front of the stage like sardines..." That's a picture of the setlist above. Some videos from the show are below... Continue [...]

As I left work on Wednesday, before the school shut down for winter break, I was reminded that all electricity would be turned off. This meant one last visit to the team refrigerator. There was a lot of vegetarian food in the freezer, from when my co-worker's son gave up on his vegetarian diet and she donated it to me, and a bag of apples in the fridge. I took the vegetarian freezer items without hesitation but stopped at the bag of apples. Pre-bagged apples are not nearly as good as those that you bag yourself. Probably because they travel [...]

Here we are, back at 1994 when the punk was punk and the grunge was grungy. The mid '90s was a hell of a time for film soundtracks to be perfectly honest. Every musical genre was retrofitted to movies, seamlessly holding them together, sometimes by a thin stream of consciousness ( Lost Highway ), or other times when the film enhanced the sounds of a depicted era ( Singles , The Crow ). Somewhere in the shuffle of this decade between hair bands and nu-metal, a movie came around that not so much defined a generation but instead became [...]
I remembered to bring my computer home from work this week, so I can actually post the mix tape I intended to post last week. It's always fun looking through my record collection and hard drive for weird covers, so hopefully you won't be disappointed by the selection this week. One or two of these might have been posted before (I know for a fact Seaweed covering Jonathan Richman was shared on the Sub Pop Peel Sessions post), but most of these should be baby-spankin' new. Calexico covers Nick Drake, then Nick Drake turns around and covers...ugh...Bob Dylan. [...]

"Radio show host John Peel is known for his great taste in music and open forum for musicians to showcase their music. This compilation of Sub Pop artists performing songs on his British radio program is a great example of the strong performances he can get in his studio setting. Mudhoney starts with the magnificent "By Her Own Hand," a dark suicide anthem performed powerfully under the live setting. After two more strong tracks from Mudhoney, Tad makes a brief appearance with the angry "Helot." Although Tad Doyle's voice comes off as weak, the performance is very short and energetic. [...]

As I've said a lot has been going on the past few months for me. One of the more recent turn of events for me was having PRK surgery to correct my vision. The pain wasn't half as bad as I expected based on my reading of blogs and messages boards on the subject, but the healing time was pretty slow - nearly a month of horribly blurred vision and tired eyes. I'm happy to say I just about have 20/20 vision, something I haven't been able to say since middle school, my eyes still get tired and [...]
