Nearly 200 bands from the PacNorWes' and beyond descended upon Stumptown, America (Portland) from September 7-11 for MusicFestNW , a five-day fête of mostly Americana/indie rock, hosted in more than 20 venues. Seattle radio station extraordinaire KEXP also rocked up, and took over the city's brilliant Doug Fir Lounge, bringing happy radio listeners and all-ages crowds some free day sessions with 12 of the more-awesome bands that were passing through. And hey, guess what? I was there, too. Why? Because Portland rules: there's beers, hippies, hipsters, fixie bikes, good food, nice venues and awesome donuts. And I spent [...]

Earlier this summer, Weezer announced they'd be hosting a cruise for fans, and now details have been released. The four-day cruise will take place from January 19-23, 2012 as passengers will travel on the cruise ship from Miami to Mexico. Many bands will be on-board as well to perform, including Dinosaur Jr., Wavves, the Antlers, Sebadoh, Free Energy, Sleeper Agent and Yuck. Many unique non-music activities that will include the band are planned for passengers on the Carnival Destiny, including Weezer bassist Scott Shriner performing ceremonies for married couples to renew their vows. Drummer Pat Wilson [...]
The concept of The Weezer Cruise , sailing the seas from January 19th through the 23rd 2012, was attractive from the get-go: a four-night cruise from Miami to Cozumel featuring performances from Weezer and a slew of indie favorites including Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Wavves, Ozma, and Yuck. Now, a boat load of new details have emerged, and this winter excursion is looking better than ever. First on deck is the music schedule . The aforementioned acts, along with many others, will be playing various indoor and outdoor stages in rotation over the [...]

photos by Autumn Andel Archers of Loaf @ MFNW "We're going to reissue more stuff. I don't know if that's on the record or not, because I don't keep up with that, but we're definitely going to reissue stuff. As long as that's happening, we're going to keep playing shows. The pace of this year has pretty much put me in a mental institution. It's just been too crazy, it's been too much. And one of the reasons I got burnt out [...]

From September 7th to 11th, music obsessives in Portland, OR trekked between 21 venues to see nearly 200 bands, fighting dehydration, worn heels, and sticky wristbands, all for the glory of Musicfest NW (MFNW). What were the highlights? Every person will give you a different answer. Was it Seattle radio station KEXP’s free day shows at the Doug Fir including the Horrors, Sebadoh and the Antlers? Watching the sun set with Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, or Explosions in the Sky outdoors at Pioneer Square? The Thermals stagediving and blowing out their amp at the EMP Backstage? Legendary [...]

A reviewing round-up of releases from the fledgling London-Winchester label, Critical Heights.
We take a look at several up-and-coming acts from this year's Outside Lands that may have been overshadowed by headliners like Arcade Fire and Phish. Their reputations for infectious and enthusiastic live performances is what earned them their time on stage, and also the reason for their surges in exposure after the festival ended less than two weeks ago. Look inside for audio clips.
Dog Day - "Daydream" MP3/download I (for a change) read the press sheet for the nifty Deformer LP and found that two members of Dog Day had ditched their band to have a baby and go for a more stripped-down ... Continue reading

The name Sebadoh is synonymous with many modern rock classics of the 19902s. There may not have been a band that caught the attention of the 'indie kids' (even though nobody called them that) like these guys did. You know the story, Lou Barlow wanted to create and write more outside of the walls of Dinosaur Jr. and enlisted the help of Eric Gaffney to help him do so. They released a cassette under the Sebadoh name in 1987 and it ended in Barlow's ouster from Dinosaur Jr. Jason Loewenstein later joined the [...]

Photos by Samantha Kolden Lo-fi pioneers Sebadoh have mapped out a new batch of U.S. tour dates for in support of their recently reissued albums Bakesale and Harmacy. According to BackstageRider , the leg kicks off in Pittsburgh on October 25th and sees the band hitting cities missed during the first go-around of the aptly titled “ Bakesale/Harmacy Remembering Time Tour.” For a taste of what to expect, check out Möhammad Choudherry's review of the band's show in [...]

As if back-to-back tours of Canada, the US , Europe , Japan and Australia all this year hasn't been enough, Sebadoh are announcing NEW tourdates in the US through October and November: They are: Tuesday 10/25 - Pittsburgh, Brillobox Wednesday 10/26 - Detroit, Magic Stick Thursday 10/27 - Cincinnati , Southgate House Friday 10/28 - Indianapolis, Radio Radio Saturday 10/29 - Columbia, Mojo's Sunday 10/30 - Chicago, Schubas [...]

Missed the first two installments? Go here for Part 1 and Part 2 of my road-trippin', German-stylee with Sebadoh. August 10: All good things must come to an end, and I'm getting spoiled by travelling with friends to cities I've never been, then hearing 32 of my favourite songs at the end of it. This is my last day with Sebadoh, and it's starting out hysterically. The lads have allowed me along for the ride in the SebaVan, a sexy Benz [...]

.... GO HERE FOR PART 1 and all the relevant lead up to why the hell I'm in Germany with Sebadoh . AND NOW.... Hamburg! Just for fun (I'm lying), I decided to get the train to Hamburg and see das German countryside . Which means I have to get a taxi to Hauptbahnhof/Central Station in Berlin at arse o'clock, because it's a bit of a fiddle from where me and the band are staying in East Berlin. My taxi driver looks like he wants to kill me and attempts to do so [...]

Lest you think BackstageRider is slowly morphing into a Sebadoh fan-site, tough shit (hee hee). 2011 is the band's year, as far as I'm concerned, and all the hubbub around Bakesale 's stellar reissue and the groovy reviews, is warranted. They're better, faster, more. And I've been proud to be along for much of the ride in my official capacity as press robot/soshul meejah irritant/cheerleader. Plus, they're my friends. I'm kinda ridiculously lucky to know 'em. So for three days in August I took time away from family bonding in Copenhagen and flew [...]

It's taken more time than usual, but it's finally ready... Blogophilia 28 represents tracks compiled from April through mid May, and was rendered down while finishing work in U.S., and traveling to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. That stated, the only real excuse for its delay is that I was pretty busy. Look for 29 soon! This is a mix where nearly all of the artists are new to the Blogophilia series. The only returnees are Vetiver and Starfucker. It's hard to believe we never had a Sebadoh track. Enjoy! Blogophilia 28 Promotional MP3s collected from blogs [...]
