The guilty pleasure of exploring secondhand charity shops will always tempt me away from the more important things I really should be doing. Unnaturally dark, smelling of moth balls and always manned by efficient volunteers giving their valuable time to a chosen worthy cause. Records, CD's or retro clobber are my choice of purchase but I have been seen walking out of these back street establishments with a lava lamp under one arm and a string-less banjo under the other. Every so often I'm going to dedicate a few paragraphs to celebrate an album picked up for the measly cost [...]
• Oh no! ESPN is reporting, "Chicago police say they are investigating an accusation that Chicago Cubs All-Star shortstop Starlin Castro sexually assaulted a woman last fall…" this could spell disaster for my fantasy baseball team in 2012. By the way, since I'm trying to tone down my act this year, can one of you help [...]
Happy World AIDS Day, everybody! Surely you remember that December 1st is World AIDS Day, right? The omniscient entity that is BONO (you must use all caps to show proper reverence) will not let you forget that today is World AIDS Day. Nor will BONO let you forget that BONO exists. His unending series of [...]
ReDigi offers an internet-era version of that stand-by for lean weeks, flogging off your records. It has a service which checks that you've deleted your copy of song, allowing it to sell it to a new owner. Naturally, the RIAA feels this must be stopped, as ars technica reports: ReDigi must "quarantine any copies on its servers of our Member's sound recordings so that those recordings are not exploited in any manner," the RIAA's Jennifer L. Pariser insists. On top of that, ReDigi must erase from its website "all references to the names and [...]

Secondhand - Hanging On An Eyelid That album cover, coud be a Tame Impala cover, some MGMT artwork, you could see it on Altered Zones or the ilk... I suppose what I'm trying to say is, that for an album out in 1971 it holds up, it looks good and most importantly the tunes are good. Take, Hanging On An Eyelid: Beach House or even your precious Arcade Fire would love some of that slightly tropical synth styling at the start. It's a prog tune though, it know's it, it's got the [...]
Prelude to Interim (Documentary) from The Art of Re-use on Vimeo . The homie Whiz shot me this video from The Madbury Club . This is right up my alley. Just in case you forgot, I do this too ... And like them, maybe I should do it for you too...

Second Hand's Reality is rarely mentioned when collectors compile their lists of best ever UK psych albums. That's a shame, because Reality is probably better than most of the well-known psych classics. Second Hand was originally known as The Next Collection, a Clapham/Balham/Streatham group who, early on, were structured around the guitar talents of Bob Gibbons (Gibbons would eventually quit the band due to depression). The Next Collection were heavily influenced by the sounds of the Who, the Creation and the Small Faces, utilizing feedback and charging arrangements in many of their early tunes. The [...]

Avalanche Records, Edinburgh Whenever I travel to other cities in Ireland and around the world I love to check out the local record emporiums, secondhand shops and charity stores . Over the last few years I've picked up loads of books, CDs and DVDs on these excursions. Recently, however, I've tended to spend most of my time browsing in the likes of Oxfam and Barnardos and less in "proper" secondhand stores. This is due to the increased proliferation of charity shops, the range and quality of the titles on offer [...]
A Croydon quality that likely inspired the new local crop - Skream, GoldieLocks, Lele et al - is the abundance of well-stocked, expert and independent music shops in the town centre. Or rather, was the abundance of well-stocked, expert and independent music shops in the town centre. For, a classic sign of the times, they've been steadily disappearing. And now, after [...]
The concept of digital ownership - do you own mp3s? And if you do, why can't you sell them - is getting a bit of a shaping up: a service called Bopaboo has started up , offering a 'used' mp3 marketplace. I'm expecting the thorny question of how you can tell that an mp3 on sale is the original and not merely a duplicate will bring the pain of a thousand RIAA lawyers down on top of the Bopaboo team at any moment. Which is a pity, as it does offer an answer to the 'what do [...]
