And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]

Reposted w/ individual mp3s (in case you don't want the whole mix): Clif started the Something for Later mixes as an outlet for longer or more subdued musical pieces, and they were initially posted on the now defunct Paper Crane Collective blog site. I decided to take up the project but refocus on experimental rock, avant garde pop, freak folk, and electronic music. Volume 3 compiles track from the mostly the first half of 2011: Something for Later Vol. 3 - 2011 [click to download ZIP file] [...]

Brooklynite Liam Carey performs under the name secondstar . His 2009 5-song EP Teeth is a profound, morose shroud of sparse, emotive music that rushes into forgotten parts of the soul, imbuing thoughts of the woeful, melancholic, and enigmatic and spurring reminiscence of childhood insecurities. The outstanding track 'Ravens' served as opener for my personal 'best of' 2009, And the Glitter is Gone . The latest effort from secondstar is called Feets . The 8 tracks on this record continue to explore the [...]

Secondstar ( MySpace ), namely Liam Carey, has made a record in Teeth that enables you to peer through a window into the past - not to reminisce but to remind. It is haunting folksy blues that engulfs the senses as you gaze into the fire for solace. The epic dirge of "Tied to the Mast" may leave you trembling, but "Great Machine" trips its way through introversion into a celebration of life, or gleeful insanity, or both. Opening track Ravens is probably my favourite, however, as Carey's chant is joined by claps before the song sweeping into shape. [...]

Once again, we proud citizens, we dicks, we Citizen Dicks are back with another batch of EPs for your consumption and consideration. This week, we have a somewhat NYC-centric batch, though that is tempered with a healthy dose of Midwest. At first I thought about apologizing for it, but then decided it seemed apropos, what with our (mostly) Cleveland roots and the ongoing music mania that is CMJ New York this week. For those of you who don't dig the geographical favoritism, however, fear not - it won't be like this forever. I mean, hopefully we'll be rocking [...]
Carey may have three different hometowns listed on his MySace page but hey, two of them are American and at least for the time being, here is where his music seems rooted to stay.

Upon entering the nondescript disc into my player and pressing play, unexpected sounds of the early '60s folk revival greeted me. Upcoming solo musicians and bands alike attempt this sound often, aiming for the blues-rock appeal of Dylan and the Byrds. Despite many failures at this seemingly futile endeavor, Secondstar's EP Teeth effortlessly masters it. Liam Carey, the only permanent member of Secondstar, duplicates that mellow folksy-blues sound with the help of guest vocalists, lead banjo, and simple melodies. He says Teeth "is kind of a bridge from an older time of more tragic [...]

Busy Man Syndrome Has Snared The Dadada Busy, busy, busy… I picked the wrong time to get serious about this blog. New job for the wife, new daycare situation for the two littlest and a shitpile of new work for me with two new preps (teaching assignments). My [...]

A good friend of mine recently passed along Brooklyn singer-songwriter Liam Carey's recent EP, Teeth . Carey performs and records under the name Secondstar , and the fine songcraft he is capable of delivering was clear on my first listen to Teeth a few weeks back during my late drive home from Keyspan Park. The harmonies that propel "Ravens" and "Tied To The Mast" jumped right out at me, reminding me of one of my (and just about everyone else's) favorite bands of 2008, Fleet Foxes. Carey doesn't sing with [...]
