A few years ago, we were introduced to Montreal exports Plants and Animals , with their debut release, Parc Avenue . That excellent record came out somewhat under the radar, but was rather well received with its mix of classic rock riffs & acoustic psych folk jams. Earlier this year, the band released their latest album, The End of That , and hit the road in support. The band aimed for a more straight ahead effort than their previous releases in terms of the recording process, eschewing overdubs and layers [...]

Plants And Animals The End Of That Secret City Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Plants And Animals find a true balance on their third record The End Of That . Album Review: On Plants And Animals sophomore record La La Land [2010] the band made a change in musical direction that boosted their sound from an acoustic style by emphasizing their harmonies, glossing up [...]

Here is the official video for 'Lightshow' by Plants and Animals, from the album, The End of That . 'Lightshow' is the first single from the bands 3rd album and offers some lovely vocals with a more powerful musical flair then the bands past catalog releases. I have been a big fan of these guys ever since their Parc Avenue debut back in 2008. One of my many Canadian Band Crushes. The "Lightshow" video is a collaboration between producer Doug Karr and director Mitchell Hart who work on visual media together [...]

Canadians announce two-front North American tour and 7" in anticipation of upcoming LP.
This year in music has been quite impressive. While 2010 gave us clear-cut, stand alone winners, it was much harder to determine which album was Top Ten worthy, let alone the best of 2011. Most sites have published their lists already, and while many albums appear on the same lists, the top ten varies greatly from list to list. Don't expect us to be any different. Two thousand and eleven has been an odd year for me, and I think for music as well. Between acclimating to a completely different environment and being fully immersed in the music world, I foresaw a serious evolution and transformation of my music tastes prior to compiling my "Best of" lists. After the completion of said lists, it seems that not much has actually changed - not only in the last year, but the last five, when observing which names were included. To be honest, it was quite difficult to decide on 10 full albums I really [...]

It's been awhile since we last heard from Montreal's Plants and Animals . Now they just dropped a new single called Lightshow from upcoming third album The End of That which drops in 2012 on Secret City Records . Like that groovy guitar windy rock sound. Sounds like they are back with that Parc Avenue sound which made them popular when they first came out in the music scene. Now I can't wait for what the new album will bring out.
Welcome to Label Picks for New Music . Every fortnight we invite a label to pick one up and coming band on their own label and another not associated with the label. This third edition features Montreal-based Secret City Records where label co-founder Andrew Rose gives his picks for the best new music. I (Andrew Rose) co-founded Secret City Records in Montreal in 2006. We're a small team so I wear a lot of hate. Though it doesn't necessarily take [...]
The Barr Brothers - Montreal quartet led by siblings Brad (songwriter/guitarist frontman) and Andrew (drummer) play an esoteric mix of ethereal folk, rueful blues and Americana shot through at times with a razor-sharp rhythmic edge and a kitchen's sink of odd, and oddly perfect instrumental noises (hand made "peanut dish banjo" anyone?)...the music began in the duo's home studio as playful and experimental off-shoot // Release : The Barr Brothers (September 27, Secret City) // Sounds like : by turns moodily atmospheric and starkly outlined with bold lines, these ten, amazingly diverse songs [...]

As I wrote in the post about Tape Deck Mountain, concert goers always experience scheduling conflicts at the big music festivals. Intense festivals such as NxNE can have as many as 25 bands playing at the same time, so there's bound to be at least two artists playing during a given time-slot that you want...

First off, fortunately I have the best job in the world this summer working at a summer camp (yes like Bug Juice) all day, unfortunately that leaves me little time to do things like this, but I'm making time. This pleasant track is perfect for the rainy days I have been experiencing here in the middle of nowhere, Michigan. It's by Secret Cities and I'm digging the shit out of it. Norah Jones meets

Secret Cities - "The Park" With the pleasant charm of pop, this shaded song permeates the ether, spreading out in a haze of psych. "The Park" has a rather saccharine melody, especially for its reverb-washed vocal harmonies that seem to peek just over the instrumentation. It possesses a hint of gray, but it manages to shine even beneath the clouded beauty. There's a level of mystery to the whole thing, almost as if they only want so much to be discerned -- which just draws you closer. "The Park" is [...]

Frank Yang One perennial highlight - okay, for two years - of my SXSW adventures was throwing day parties where we could invite Japanese Action Comic Punk outfit Peelander-Z to wreak havoc. So it was nice to see that not only were the Peelanders in town for NXNE , but they had an all-ages afternoon show scheduled at Sneaky Dee's on the Saturday. I guess Toronto's still getting used to the idea of having shows when it's still daylight out, because the gig was only attended [...]

If a blend of weightless lite-psych a la Os Mutantes and trippy Americana from a mixed gender Beechwood Sparks is the sort of thing you think is missing from your life right now then look no further for Secret Cities deliver it in spades. Secret Cities - Strange Hearts From the vaults of their recording space in Kansas City (literal vaults as it's an ex-Bank) their second album, Strange Hearts , has emerged ready to conduct you on a [...]

Nothing better than waking up to see that one of your favourite music bloggers has put together their newest playlist. Hot off the press from Music For Ants today is the Summer (or what it sounds like) Vol. 2 mix . Grab each song individually below or else download all at once with the zip file. If you get a chance, make sure to pop over to their site and just have a look around. Happy listening! MP3 Givers – Up Up Up [...]

As they say, better late than clever. Or was it never? No, I don't think that has ever been the case. You can blame Summer for its leisure arrival to great Northwest or the fact that a greater understanding of time management quite frankly just eludes me-this really only happens as it gets warmer, I swear. Whatever the case may be, Music For Ants' second Summer mix is here and is yours for the taking. Should these songs fail to grow on you... learn to seek the sun (and read better, of course). [...]
