"America, you complete me" President Bush implored lawmakers and the nation last night to give him one more chance to win the war in Iraq and avoid the "nightmare scenario" of defeat while presenting a domestic agenda intended to find common cause with the new Democratic Congress on issues such as energy and immigration. Politically wounded but rhetorically unbowed, Bush gave no ground on his decision to dispatch 21,500 more troops to Iraq despite a bipartisan cascade of criticism. Addressing for the first time a Congress controlled by the other party, Bush [...]
In compiling this list, I tried to not overthink it. As I drove home from work, a few clear choices came to mind: "Talk on Indolence" by the Avett Brothers, "Stop Thinking" by the Mysteries of Life, "You Blanks" by Portastatic. Some came to mind as I perused the 2006 playlist in my iTunes library: "Face of a Faith" by Nellie McKay, "Black Sweat" by Prince," the remix of Wolfmother's "Woman."
Hey guys, that time of year again...and i know this is probably the 5 millionth of these lists you have read, but bear with me. I promise it won't hurt. Overall this was a great year for music. There were lots of bands pushing the envelope, lots of listeners opening that envelope, and lots of music that was just plain-old nice and comfy. Here are my top ten albums that came out in 2006. The top 5 were almost a dead heat...but decisions had to be made, and i made them. As much [...]

These are not the salad days of stoner rock. In the 1960's, it seems like nearly every album was made for the narcotically inclined: 13th Floor Elevators, Hendrix, The Beatles,The Dead..et al. This proud trend carried into the 70's , with the prog-rock bombast of groups like classic Pink Floyd and King Crimson, the roots reggae heydey of Bob Marley and the thumping dub of King Tubby. After a dry-spell in the 80s (Flock of Seagulls? Not so great while high), stoner rock made a resurgence in the 90s with groups like Mercury Rev, Phish, The Flaming Lips and Ride, not [...]

Brazil's latest "The Philosophy Of Velocity" takes serious cues from current bands like Mars Volta and Secret Machines to classic rockers like E.L.O. and Queen. These are large songs with spacey, layered guitars, huge keyboards and a glob of other instruments. And it certainly helps to know that the whole mix was produced by Dave Fridmann, who adds his unique brushstrokes and textures to the production of each song. Finally the prog rock goodness is sealed with frontman Jonathan Newby's high-pitched voice (hail Freddy Mercury). My favorite track of the whole affair is "Candles (Cast Long Shadows)", a [...]
So it's been a while since I've put together a little mix for all of you. I've been listening to a ton of great music lately, that I just haven't gotten around to posting about. So consider this an introduction. Let me know what you like/dislike, and make sure you put this all together on your little iPods while walking outside to the crisp Fall weather. It works perfectly with the temperature, trust me. Ennui - Time and Place Ok Go - Here It Goes Again [...]

I just posted on The Cure a few minutes ago, but then I found an e-mail about what looks like a really aweseme tour that may be coming your way: The Secret Machines recently announced their “In The Round†Tour where they will be setting up a stage in the middle of clubs and have the fans encircle them. Many people have been curious as to how the actually stage set up will work. The bands new video for “All At Once (It’s Not Important)†gives a rough idea of what the show will look like. Also [...]

i read so many articles this week about bono being a conniving capitalist hypocrite that my head hurts. first he invested in forbes. then u2 inc. moved some of their business dealings out of ireland. he also likes evil video games and big ugly buildings. such drama. can you imagine all of the awful things he intends to do with that money and power? maybe bush and blair should forget about that bin laden guy and just capture this bono fella. About a week and a half ago, I headed to Artscape in Baltimore. Artscape is an annual free outdoor arts festival that takes place over three days in the summer. For the event, they block off several city blocks and let all the cheap bastards roam all over the place. You can bring your own alcohol, so people are standing in the middle of the street with the huge coolers with wheels filled with alcohol. You have to love B-More. This event also includes three stages of live music (local, rap/r&b, and rock). I went on Saturday night, [...]
It is gonna be hot as hell this weekend for the Pitchfork Music Festival. Hopefully things cool down in Chicago a little for next weekend's Lollapalooza . One band that I will hopefully get to see again (for the first time in probably 8 years) is Poi Dog Pondering. Virtually unknown outside of Chicago, they are an eclectic blend of rock, various world musics, and electronica. Be sure to check them out if you get the chance. And here is another batch of tunes from Lollapalooza performers. It's less than a week away! [...]

Dodge, over @ My Old Kentucky Blog , called The Secret Machines one of the biggest dissapoitments of the year. That's pretty harsh. I just listened to the album. It's actually pretty good. I mean, I have two ears just like everybody else, and they liked it, so...I wonder if different sets of ears hear different things. Does that happen with your eyes too? When I see a red flower, is somebody else seeing a yellow flower? I think I should start investigating this. [...]
