It's been an interesting year because I expected our album to come out, but that's what happens when you expect something. Thank the universe for showing us who's the boss and slowing us down; something always comes along and turns us into something else. 2007 is going to be an exciting year for [...]

I've been looking and looking for these and finally found them. Hope you're having a swell Sunday. It appears one of the Serenas has a naggin' noggin'. Et tu, stytzer? (Click band names for info.) Serena Maneesh - un-deux mp3 The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now mp3 [...]

My year-end list is always a serious chore... one I both love and loath at the same time, in part because I have a hard time narrowing it down. Last year I had over 150 albums and this year I find myself in similar straits. One of my methods for narrowing the field down is to make sure the album was originally released this year. Many of the albums you'll see (or will see) on folks' year-end lists were released last year and fell under the radar because they were either a) released in another country or [...]
I find year-end music lists a great and useful diversion, especially when I have found a common interest with the listmaker. Often I will revisit music that didn't grab me at first listen, or seek out new bands on a listmaker's recommendation. This year I listened to more albums than any year my life. Rare was the day that I didn't put at least three or four unheard CDs in my messenger bag in the morning, only to repeat the cycle the next day. After listening to so much new music, certain albums stood out among the [...]

Editor's Note: This post was written by Pacific Northwest band, Saturna . This is part of a series of posts that they are doing today. See below for links to the rest. We thought that we’d leave you with a taste of the best indie rock that is currently out there. If you haven’t heard these bands, then step out of the dark ages and pull your fingers out of your ears. [...]

traumberuf gitarrenschrubber. jeder dritte jugendlich träumt davon. Faced with either driving to Boulder for Band of Horses or staying local for Norweigan shoegaze playing just up the road I made the obvious choice for my tired self on a school night. Failing in sparking enough energy to even consider getting in a car, let alone driving my straggling ass to the Fox theatre I decided on staying local and taking in Serena Maneesh at Larimer Lounge. This won't be a typical long-form review as I don't have enough background on the band for a detailed report. I do, however, have [...]

Those of you who have been reading this blog for a few months and have a good memory may sense a little déjà vu about this title. Yes I have been here before back in June, reviewing The Early Years at the White Heat club at Madame Jo Jo’s. However, this time is different. This time I am actually reviewing The Early Years, as opposed to indie dullards Amusement Parks on Fire. All is explained in the previous post and comments . The Early Years aren’t really a [...]
This week starts off with nothing to do on Monday! I have no suggestions for Monday so just go to some barbeque and hang out. As for the rest of the week it picks up pretty quickly with lots of good shows all week long and into the weekend. Should be an interesting week of live music viewing here in New York. Tuesday: While many people will be at the sold out Ratatat show I will not be, so instead of recommending that you and I go to a sold out show I'll suggest [...]
By reading this you are now bound by law to attend all of these great shows. Also you must introduce yourself to us after the show. We'll be waiting outside. Seriously. Deerhoof Sept 6th @ The Troubadour I saw a bit of their show at Coachella, and was pretty floored by the drumming alone. This big cloud of chaos descended upon the stage for about a minute at a time, then suddenly everything would

Serena Maneesh is an alternative band from Oslo, Norway. “Serena is an adaptation of the Norwegian word for veil...The name came out from this veil you can see, you can see the melody through a stressful storm of noise. That’s what I love about music â€" you can work with this veil. Serena could also mean serenity, serene. There are all these connotations. Then you see glints -- you see something incredible, but it’s in the moment. It’s through this veil. ‘Maneesh’ is a rewriting of the Norwegian word manesje, which is the area around a stage. We later [...]
Every time I venture into a new city, I can’t help but think, "Sure, this glitzy street with MacDonald’s and Starbucks feels authentic enough, but where do the rockers hang out? What do the cool kids get up to?" And...
Segueness is a curious random occurrence where two tunes ultimately beat as one. It's what the best DJ's call the moment they turned down a pretty girl. Segueness will attempt to extract some fine tunage from disparate artists, put them in close proximity and hope the listener establishes a true lineage. Take a listen to these up and coming Scandinavian’s who process beats and flutterbye melodies
I figured since practically every music fan in New York will be heading out to Coney Island tomorrow morning for the annual Siren Fest that I would post a mix of the artists that are performing tomorrow. You will notice that I'm not including every band that is playing, because I don't like every band. As always this does not mean that you can't enjoy them I just thought I'd shine the light on the ones I do enjoy. Anyway, make sure you catch these four bands tomorrow or you'll be sorry: Man Man (2:30 Stillwell stage), Dirty on Purpose [...]

Play it: Danielson Ships Play it: Charalambides A Vintage Burden Play it: Vetiver To Find Me Gone (now find it gone in Rhapsody) There has been a recent flood of great freak folk (re: psych folk ) in the past few weeks making their way into the Rhapsody catalogue. Here's three that have caught my ear's attention. The [...]
