We've talked about Serengeti's persona Kenny Dennis before when he released his EP last year. Well, Kenny Dennis, the over-the-top 50 year old beer drinking and brat eating Chicagoan, is back with a full LP. The album features contributions from Odd Nosdam, Jel, and a guest spot from Anders Holm (Workaholics), and comes out on June 25th via Anticon.
HAPPY birthday to us! This month marks 12 months since Sound Advice was resurrected and one of the best things about being up and runnign again, apart from being sent free CDs of course, is the fact I've been able to offer some fantastic free downloads for you lucky readers. So what better way to mark 12 months than to offer a second compilation album to download. The 12 track Many Faces of Sound Advice album is 100 per cent free, 100 per cent legal, and 100 per cent no strings attached - click here to get [...]

Kenny Dennis is the Deacon, the Grimm Teacher, the MC Crusher, the onion eater, the chop connoisseur, the 4:14 mile runner, the cool wind passing you by. He is the weather vane telling you which way the wind blows, the clerk always offering the right directions. There are moments of true comic genius in Serengeti's Kenny alter-ego. The coda when he starts listing directions like the Contra Code at the end of "Directions," is one of those instances where there is no daylight between the character and the corporeal. In interviews, I've asked 'Geti obscure questions about Kenny and without [...]

In his time working under the Serengeti moniker, David Cohn has often written songs as other people, adopting different personae through which he filters his impressively clear and direct storytelling. It seems that he'll be focusing on the Chicagoan Kenny Dennis for now (loves football, is preoccupied with the little things in life, etc.), and after releasing the Kenny Dennis EP last year, he's following that up with an album of the same name, due out via Anticon on June 24th. The first track to be taken from said album is the [...]

Without a doubt, Kenny Dennis is one of my favorite rapper alter egos out there. He's the goofball, all-Chicago-everything alter ego of Serengeti , who typically sticks to more serious subject matter. But as Dennis, he covers it all from his beef with Shaq to talking as much sh*t as humanly possible. At least, he does plenty of the latter on the lead single off the upcoming Kenny Dennis LP. "Directions", like the rest of the album, is produced by Odd Nosdam . You can stream and/or download "Directions" below. Kenny Dennis drops [...]
I never got around to mentioning, but for anyone who looks at my mixes over at 8tracks , I finally got around to a "Best Of 20123 mix and put it up there, instead of the Opentape thing I had been doing for the last few years that I doubt anyone ever used. Here's the tracklist for 2012 : 01. Moses Gold - Powder and Blood 02. Grimes - Oblivion 03. Serengeti feat. Yoni Wolf - Geti Life 04. Sean Born - Pour Out Liquor 05. Divine Fits [...]
Hip-hop seems to go over well at (new) work, so I figured I'd do my first all-hip-hop mix since October 2011 . Inspired by a Dynospectrum track that didn't even meet the cut, Headphone Static is an homage to rough, Fondle 'Em -era 90s hip-hop production. March 2013 Mix - "Headphone Static" 01 Juggaknots - Troubleman (1996) 02 El-P - Tuned Mass Damper (2002) 03 Joey Bada$$ - Waves (2012) 04 Serengeti feat. [...]

Given the minimal amount of traditional “rapping” on Serengeti ’s new album Saal , his first with Atlanta label Graveface, it’s hard to classify it as a hip hop record. The only records I can think to compare it to are Geti’s last couple solo efforts Family & Friends and C.A.R. , yet Saal is such a departure from the sound of those two albums that it’s really in a league of its own. Not that it’s considerably better than those albums, but something is different with this one. [...]
Yoni Wolf sounds like he could use a vacation, but instead he is going to spend the next couple weeks like he has spent the last couple months, sleeping in a bunk on a bus and preparing meals like a college freshman. Luckily for all the Why? fans, the more Yoni may need to chill, ... Continue reading

Serengeti - Saal Graveface Records: 2013 GZA closed his classic solo album Liquid Swords with “B.I.B.L.E.”, translating to basic instructions before leaving earth. In listening to Serengeti’s Saal record, one can find basic instructions on remaining on earth and dealing with age. Serengeti’s Saal is wrought with a deep and inescapable pain, offset by a genuine interest in growth. Imagine the naked apologies and frustrations of “Go Dancin’” from previous record C.A.R. revisited throughout a nine song player. That is Saal . He buys bed sheets as a wedding gift with plans [...]
IT'S PLAIN that rapper Serengeti is a talented man. The C.A.R album was one of the highlights of the year's hip hop output, especially album closer Uncle Traum which was one of my most-played tracks of 2012. But in case "married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper" Serengeti has passed you by so far, you can grab yourself a free mp3 download of Shazam! here - Serengeti - Shazam.mp3

I'd Prefer is a bonus track from the forthcoming Serengeti album, 'Saal', out Feb 12th, 2013. 'Saal' is Serengeti's first record for the Savannah based label & store, Graveface Records & Curiosities (The Appleseed Cast, Whirr, The Casket Girls, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Jason Molina, Xiu Xiu etc). Produced by Sicker Man. Remixed by Mokke. PreOrder: www.graveface.com/graveface-ca talog.html
New track from Serengeti 's upcoming Saal record on Graveface Records . Out Feb 12. This track is a lot different from 'Geti's usual stuff, and I'm loving it. Produced by German multi-instrumentalist Sicker Man .

Jack of all trades Serengeti is set to release a new LP titled Saal this February 12th through Graveface, but until then you can check out the slow and brooding 'Breaking Vows'. It's probably not what you'd expect from the Chicago musician, so listen with caution!

Every year in December, as I comb over my favorite songs to include on a year-end CD to give to friends - Spotify is too easy; an 80-minute CD-R has a way of forcing you to self-edit - it becomes abundantly clear that I never listen to enough. Whether it's time or patience I'm lacking, it seems harder each year to consume so much music. In some ways, I guess I'd rather form a deeper relationship with a few albums than have just a passing interest in many. To that end, a handful of albums captivated [...]

The last we heard from Sufjan collaborator and ex-Anticon rapper Serengeti was in the Best Fit-premiered video for 'Amnesia', what we called "a Looney Tunes interpretation of West Coast hip-hop". Now the Chicago native is back with his first album on Graveface and this new track, 'Breaking Vows', which sounds like Jens Lekman doing a slow jam. Listen to that below: New album, Saal, is out 12 February.
Eight months ago, Serengeti sent me a file of untagged songs that he had recorded in Berlin. He gave little info more other than it was his German record and you can hear that in the Bavarian bells that sound like something out of a Pantha Du Prince song. But this isn't minimal techno - it's more in the vein of late-period Beck, except better. Open Mike Eagle swears that the German record is his favorite thing that Geti has ever done and if I don't altogether agree, I can't altogether argue. It's been given the [...]

words and photos by Caroline Harrison WHY? at MHOW, 9/13/2012 WHY? stopped in Brooklyn last night (9/13), headlining a sold-out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Labelmates Doseone and Serengeti supported, playing to a more enthusiastic and packed house than most opening acts see. DJ Thanksgiving Brown spun between sets. Serengeti raps without any hurry, imparting lyrics to the audience as if he and they were just having [...]
