Serge has been covered a lot (see this incredibly long, but not complete list), and his songs have been sampled as well. Especially the Melody Nelson album proved and proves to be a fine source for big name-artists like Massive Attack, David Holmes and Beck. Recently I read that even De La Soul sampled Serge. For their brilliant De La Soul Is Dead album, two short songs nick from Serge-chansons, En Melody and Les Oubliettes . I also bumped into this interesting site, filing the sample-art by a fella [...]
Good gravy, here we go. The Top 30 of The Top 100 Drinking Songs starts here. Show me the way to go home. Is that Wynonie Harris in the list below? Wonder if we'll see him again further down the line? What do you y'all think so far? Are you holding off 'til we get to the end? Get your cocktail napkins ready and start scribbling. We want to hear what you think. A list is nothing more than an

Everytime when I'm thinking, hm, it's been a while since I posted a track by Serge, an opportunity comes a-knocking. Manu Markou & Odile Closset have a new album out, Démantibulés , and chose to cover Serge's La Nostalgie Camarade . That song, originally on Mauvaises Nouvelles des Étoiles , is a key track for Manu & Odile. The album is about, well, the misunderstandings between man and woman - so there. Manu decided to de-reggae Nostalgie a little, add some triphop-effects, but the bouncing rhythm is still there. On the original version, [...]

Happy spring! Happy blog! Happy Tuesday! I'm on spring break , suckers, so I've spent some good lounge time listening to music and putting together an mp3 post. I have been completely enamored of vintage French pop music lately, ever since the purchase of this album , and it's inspired me to dig out some older stuff that I haven't listened to in a while. To me, French pop music screams SPRINGTIME! It helps that the sun is shining, the day is beautiful, and I don't have to teach for another few days. [...]

The mid winter lull in musical new releases often finds me stocking up on the back catalogues - the oldies, greatest hits collections and remasters of the classics. The last few weeks has been no exception; recent additions include VU's 2 disc set Gold, the Essential Hall & Oates, Robert Palmer's The Best Of The Island Years, the expanded remaster of Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson, and this

Are there songs by Serge that can't be sung by a girl? Requiem pour un con springs to mind, but there are at least two female versions of this bitter, angry revenge-song Serge wrote for (and sang in) the 1968-movie Pacha , with Jean Gabin. See that great scene here . To me, the song is a speech on a funeral of a major asshole, read by someone who finally sees his chance to get even. Ofcourse, girls can feel that emotion just as well, both Zazie and Vanessa Paradis did credible [...]
The career of France Gall, perhaps the most appealing and accomplished of the so called ye ye girls of 60's French Pop, was ignited by her 1965 victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. Before that storied contest was dominated by Finnish Death Metal , it was helpless before the uncaged cuteness of Ms. Gall. Try to resist... France Gall - "Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son" [...]

It was 1967, and the Summer of Love had had immense consequences. Take the young, gorgeous French filmstar and the ugly, talented French songwriter. Her marraige was afloat, he fell for her mightily. Those two were Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, whose working relationship developed into a love affair. Bardot was starring on tv in the Bardot-show , a kind of MTV clipshow avant la lettre. Serge wrote some of his best tunes for her, which were performed with lots of costume changes and outlandish backdrops. One of the songs Serge wrote for BB was Bonnie & Clyde [...]

Yep, that's him on the left: Jacques Prévert . You can easily see why Serge Gainsbourg liked this fellow: he's seldomly pictured without a cigarette. Prévert (1900-1977) was a poet, screenwriter, surrealist and theater-enthousiast, probably his best known poem is Les Feuilles M ortes. Set to music by Joseph Kosma in 1945, the song was translated four years later by Johnny Mercer. As Autumn Leaves , the chanson became a standard and has been covered many, many times (ranging from Juliette Gréco to Coldcut), but contrary to popular belief, Yves Montand wasn't the first to [...]
There they are, in all their campy glory. Three winners, three honorable mentions. Congrats to Scott Williams (no not you, Skunt) who won the J.Dilla package, Greg Scott, the winner of the OBEY print, Rising" "Quiet Storm" - Smokey Robinson used in "Breakadawn" Thanks again to everyone that entered the contest, as well as Antimc for providing many of today's tracks. Also, those of you in the

I know I say this every week, but our radio show tonight on SIRIUS is really going to be the best one yet. What can I say, I'm getting the hang of this radio thing: get amazing guests in the studio so I don't have to talk as much, and let them pick some of the songs. This week, the lovely Annie Clark of St. Vincent (and the Polyphonic Spree) will stop by to discuss her upcoming record Marry Me , her upcoming tours with two of [...]

Our hyper picky parsing of Pitchfork's recent 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960's feature continues today as promised with the final two categories; Artists who were underrepresented by the epic list, and pet obscurities that we might have fought for if given the chance. Read part 1 here . Shafted: One of the strongest singer/songwriters in any decade, Leonard Cohen might have suffered for his longevity in the compiling of the list. His best song not included, "Famous Blue Raincoat", came from the [...]

First off, you cant beat a good old fashioned artist quote; "I'd rather poo in my mum's Sunday roast than have Danger Mouse produce a Portishead record. No offence." - that was Portishead member Geoff Barrow responding to suggestions that the band should turn to someone like Danger Mouse to help sort out their stumbling new album. Well, I'm sure they'll work it out on their own. Just hope Danger Mouse gets the message and stops [...]

I know alot of other sites do semi-regular covers features, and so far I've been resisting the urge. Now, in the steamy home stretch of summer, I fear the tension between me and cover versions is just too great to deny. I can't take all these longing gazes, sleepless nights, and petty arguments springing from nowhere, any longer. While common decency won't let me do this on a regular basis, I need a release. So here, in an abundant, unthinking burst I give you more cover love than you can possibly handle. Hopefully things won't [...]
