I've always had a low tolerance for alcohol. In college, I could get three good nights off a six-pack. Today, even a single beer with supper gives me quite the buzz. Low tolerance means I don't drink much; after all, though I love a good microbrew IPA as much as the next guy, he can usually drive home afterwards, and I can't. But yesterday was a tough day. By the time I got home, it was time for a drink or three. I [...]

I admittedly don't know a lot about Boston's musical heritage. I do put the following things with Boston: NKOTB, Bob Ryan, The Sox, Celtics, racism, Aerosmith, Southies, Harvard, The Afleck brothers and apples. However, what I don't identify with Boston is Americana music of any kind. But, apparently I was wrong about that. Session Americana have nice inflections of old-timey music and a bit of twang. But, "I Can't Get Out" is a great song for a rainy day like today. [...]

Attention STWOF Readers! I need your help. I'm attempting to put together the ultimate compilation of drinking songs. As a fan of both drinking and song, this task is close to my heart, but I can't do it alone. Your vast knowledge of the musical landscape is necessary to ensure that no stone is left unturned. This is a quest for quality, not quantity. Please send your suggestion in the comment section below. There are no genre limitations. Include as many as you wish. Supporting arguments are welcome but not required. (Optional: You might [...]
Throwing a multi-venue music festival in the dead of a finally frigid New England winter may seem a bit anomalous, especially so soon after the streets have been swept clean of the detritus of First Night celebrations. But music has always been a way to drive away the chill. And with the weather slowing touring schedules for many local musicians, winter can also bring a high concentration of well-rested musicians back home to roost, just waiting for a catalyst to celebrate. At its best, then, heading out to see local live music [...]

I love Rose Polenzani . I love her goofy YouTube video's . I love her songs. I love the fact that she's got so many friends in the folk community. I love the fact that she's from Boston (my hometown). This new record has barely had time to be a "Lost Disc of 20083 as it was just released nationally on Oct. 1. But even from the start it's an under-the-radar record from and under-the-radar artist. This record has not appeared on any of the various release lists I peruse, yet it [...]

Rose Polenzani will compete as a finalist tomorrow night in Mountain Stage 's NewSong Festival , so I sought out her album When The River Meets The Sea and fell for her beautiful voice. Rose recorded this unusual and lovely album with Session Americana, and it features guest vocals by Jennifer Kimball and Ana Egge. If I could hit you as hard as I wanted, I'd have kissed you softer when you died. One star falls on the gravesite, someone loves [...]
