Sunday at Camp Bestival continued in exactly the same way as the two previous days. Perfect festival weather, an eclectic mix of music and good vibes all round. The once Mercury nominated Seth Lakeman , a late addition to the bill, drew a significant crowd to the bandstand stage to witness him play songs from his new album Hearts and Minds as well as some older material. His rootsy hoedown and folkish marching songs got to the tribal core and soul of human emotion and went down a [...]

The Mercury prize nominated singer songwriter is back, back with viola playing a vengeance. With no time to waste a barrage of folk country is vivaciously throttling your ear drums but in a nice way. A fast paced country twang is repeated lead to battle by sharp strings and followed by guitars, organs and harmonicas, leaving you with the urge to grab a straw hat, a cold organic cider and have a long flimsy strand of wheat hanging from your mouth. Sparse drums commence complimenting the instrumental introduction like a scarecrow compliments a country landscape whilst adding a modern [...]
Artist: Seth Lakeman Album: Hearts and Minds Release Date: 16 July 2010 Label: Relentless Producer: Tchad Blake

It's been eight years since Seth Lakeman released The Punch Bowl , his first solo record. So, what's new? What is the Devonshire-born multi-instrumentalist offering on this new album that he hasn't done before? On first listen, it's difficult to identify anything terribly unexpected in Hearts and Minds . Coming in at just over 45 minutes long, the record wears the same fiddle/banjo/acoustic guitar combos on its sleeve as its predecessors, but continues in the rockier vein of 2008's Poor Man's Heaven, perhaps due to the presence of Tchad Blake, producer of reams of [...]
Never Enough Notes talk to Seth Lakeman, folk music's rising star and Mercury Music Prize nominee.
Hearts and Minds is the new album from Seth Lakeman, and like a lot of his albums so far contains a track with the same name as the album. The song 'Hearts and Minds' is the first single from the album. The single is due out June 21st, with the album following a week later. Wychwood Festival is a very civilised, very adult affair. Casting your eye over the sun kissed crowds under the Prestbury Hills by Cheltenham it's easy to identify the significant number of families, the happy relaxed vibe, the lack of trouble, the lack of litter on the campsites, the picnic blankets and queues for the smoothie stall that are often longer than those for the bar. "Welcome to the summer," shout The Levellers during their unpretentious punk-folk headlining slot on the Friday night, and certainly Wychwood feels like the curtain being drawn [...]

Possible tracks: - Circle Grows - Preachers Ghost - Fire & Dirt - Stepping Over You - The Watchman - Signed and Sealed [...]

The man who brought together traditional old folkies and hip teenagers at nightclubs instead of folk clubs, whilst still maintaining the support and intrigue of both, has announced details of a brand new album to be released through Virgin on June 14th. The new album, entitled 'Hearts & Minds' is said to present a rather harder edged brand of folk than 2008's critically acclaimed top-1o album 'Poor Man's Heaven'. I can't wait to hear what this Mercury nominated folk start does next. And remember kids, Seth was about in 'mainstream' folk long before anyone had uttered [...]

Part Three of my countdown of the top 110 albums of the decade. You can find 110-101 here , and 100-91 here. But for now, here's 90-81... 90. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones (2006) Karen O and her band of merry men are definitely one of the most consistent acts of the decade. Show Your Bones was confirmation of the sheer magnificence the YYYs showed on their first album. It was [...]

Another installment. I do these when I have a build up. So it should be "Yesterday and the day before I listened to..." Bloc Party - Silent Alarm The original and best Bloc Party album. I don't think they'll ever equal it. Especially with the direction they've gone post-'Flux'. Although last year's record was promising. Nothing will beat 'Banquet' though. Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You The first [...]

I know this is almost a whole month early, but there's all sorts of reasons for getting my list out early. December is the time when everyone begins to take stock of the year's achievements and gets all nostalgic about the blue remembered hills of the past twelve months, so there's a more receptive audience for this kind of post. Plus, when January comes around it'll be time to look forward to the bright and promising future, so nostalgia is officially banned. It's also nearly Christmas, and lists like this one are an easy way to decide on presents for [...]
