A Quick Word from the Author: If you're from the United States, then I hope your 4th was as splendid as the 30 second burst of fireworks in San Diego. It's a glorious day to eat a whole lot of unhealthy food, drink a lot of booze and blow shit up. It's how we do here. We're 'MERICA, and we have very few fucks to give. There's really not much else to say, I just wanted to wish you all a fantastic Independence Day. Moving on... [...]

Mixtape: Things You May Have Missed Earlier This Year (Podcast #280) Words by Ben Van Houten When it was pitched, this episode was known informally as an "underrated bands" mix, a label that seems as unworkable as it feels insulting. In an age of increasing access to an perpetually growing volume of music, and a culture that focuses on always keeping an eye out for the next big thing, the idea that any band could hold any attention long enough to be over-/under-/rated at all seems unlikely. Forget [...]

When knuckling down to the finer intricacies of classroom-based botany, there was always an endless intrigue located within the way in which evergreens would retain their spindly fingers and seasonally perfumed pines for periods of time that, at such an age, seemed just so endless. San Fran duo Seventeen Evergreen tinge such concept with finite restriction and although few artists ever muster such profuse discography (the compulsive pulses of Daniel Johnston, R. Stevie Moore, etc. aside) the wide-eyed, raging synth maelstroms of follow-up full-length Steady On, Scientist! never quite substantiate the claims of radical enterprise contained [...]
The Video Trailer That Made My Week - Seventeen Evergreen - Steady On, Scientist! My San Francisco budz Seventeen Evergreen have a new record out so to get you in the mood for a psychedelic, synth-groove of an adventure, they made this trippy ass Never Ending Story inspired video trailer. Even if you never hear their record (but I hope you do) this trailer is a must see. Steady On, Scientists! is out now via Lucky Numbers Music, get it HERE . [...]
Okay, so if you just listen to the first little bit of this song, then you'll definitely get the electro-pop elements featured at the beginning of this new jam by Seventeen Evergreen . But, while the song goes along, it evolves into more of an avant-pop construction, coating the track with slight bits of ambient noise, before returning to the electro-pop hook. You can find this track this week in your local record store on the group's new release, Steady On, Scientist , which was put out by [...]

Being compared with The Flaming Lips, MGMT and Midlake might have an adverse effect on a band. It could either go to their heads, leading them to only go on to disappoint. Or, it could be a critical burden that could only lead to burn out while trying not to disappoint. Neither applies to Caleb Pate and Nephi Evans, the writers, singers, musicians and producers from San Francisco who are the whole and the parts of Seventeen Evergreen. There is a glorious lack of self-consciousness on this their second album. Instead we find an abundance and wealth of [...]

Upon entering Bimbo’s 365 aka San Francisco’s classiest venue, I could tell that Atlas Sound (the solo project of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox) had its own diverse audience. I did not expect so many teens and pre-teens to be attending this unusual showcase. I guess I’ve underestimated Bradford’s reach when it comes to grabbing a youthful audience. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; I’m all for our youth to experience anything but what’s being force feed to them on the radio nowadays. However, what I definitely did not expect was the utterly bizarre opening acts for Atlas Sound [...]
