Next week, thousands of folks across the nation (and the globe) will trek out to Indio, CA for what promises to be one hell of a music festival: Coachella . For some, it's a short afternoon ride. But for others, it's one far out trip - metaphorically and literally. However, getting there is half the battle and if you're smart, it's less a battle and more an experience. That is, if you're open to some creativity and an assortment of artists. We love our country, and we love our music. Naturally, music about our great nation goes [...]

For today's mix, we travel back to 2003. When The Duke Of Straw still worked as a coffee-jerk at Borders. Back then, I worked with a the same woman for on almost every Wednesday for three months. Somehow, we turned our shift into a theme: Wild West Whip Cream Wednesday. We wore western style shirts. I wore my cowboy hat. We put whipped cream on everything. Mochas, cappuccinos, biscotti. Everything. I was writing screenplays back then. I wrote a short film called Ruff and Tufff Movue Buffs. With [...]
Two radically different versions of a very simple, yet powerful song. Sex Mob ∞ For What It's Worth Sergio Mendes ∞ For What It's Worth Which version do you prefer? or did I leave about your favorite? Leave a hullabaloo. More: Compare & Contrast-s
This year, the '80s turn old. Three of the biggest artists of that decade turn 50 this summer: Madonna (August 16), Michael Jackson (August 29) and, today, Prince. Back in the day, everyone thought he was the weird one, but while Madonna peddles kid's books and lukewarm disco and Michael, well, whatever, Prince is the one whose grown up distinguished. He's fashioned himself an R&B statesman, and his work is as good as ever, despite the popular idea that he's "over." The Rainbow Children (2001), Musicology (2004) and 3121 (2006) stand up to his [...]

Steven Bernstein may be the most important slide trumpeter in the history of jazz. Maybe because he is about the only slide trumpeter. A prolific composer, performer and arranger, Steven can be heard/found just about everywhere. He has played in the studio for Rufus Wainwright , Marianne Faithful , Linda Thompson and Darlene Love . Joined these musicians on stage: Lou Reed , Jarvis Cocker , Ben E. King , Shane McGowan , Beth Orton and Pete Doherty. [...]

In which Don momentarily takes a diversion from his Memphis series to talk Jazz. There's more to come in the Memphis Series in the weeks ahead. I'm far from finished writing about the M-town. The fact is, though, there's a few things that I've wanted to get into. Think Jazz is dead? Sex Mob. Goddamn. Sex Mob do hard hittin' Jazz covers. The group is a core of four on a slide trumpet, a saxophone, drums and the bass, though their albums feature [...]

The seed of this post was planted while listening to Iceberg 95 on my Sirius radio. Sloan was a guest DJ. They played their song below and called it a suite. Made me wonder about some other nice suites (and/or songs with suite in the title). Sloan ~ Fading into Obscurity Feist ~ Leisure Suite Sex Mob ~ Pygmy Suite Wilco ~ Pieholden Suite (demo) Pink Floyd ~ Rain in the country (suite) [...]

I posted about this pretend soundtrack, like years ago. But it's making its triumphant return because John Medeski plays organ with this quartet. On this album of made up soundtrack music for Bond films. Below are three tracks totally spiced up by Medeski's grinding organ. Dr. Yes Teasing the Korean Battle at Piz Gloria Further study: website Hype Machine elbo Contest reminder ~ Win Spiderman [...]
Sex Mob -- For What It's Worth This is on a totally different track, but Tuwa's last post reminded me of a great version of For What It's Worth by Sex Mob , which was Steven Bernstein's last band before Millenial Territory Orchestra . Bernstein takes jazz in all sorts of interesting directions, trying to make it a little less cerebral and more accessible. He describes it this way: Jazz used to be popular music. People would go out to clubs, listen to the music, go home, and get laid. [...]
Heel vreemd bl...

With all due respect to Wynton Marsalis and his Lincoln Center crew, jazz traditionalists are…well, they're jackasses. Jazz was the definition of musical adventure until Upper West Side honkies started trading in their philharmonic memberships for that classic jazz sound. Don't get me wrong, I like to listen to Miles, Coltrane, Satchmo and the Duke as much as the next person. But Miles Davis wasn't even revisiting Kind of Blue five years after he made it, so why should anyone else be revisiting it 40 years later? Sex Mob isn't so traditional. Their meandering horns and smooth rhythms [...]
not sure when Yours Truly, Angry Mob drops. but this song could've come out in 1998 by supergrass. i'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Kaiser Chiefs "Ruby" RUBY THURSDAY BONUS: Sex Mob "Ruby Tuesday" (Rolling Stones cover) ( neiles life on point)
Sex Mob - Live and Let Die 24th December: in which the spirit of Christmas finally catches up with your humble author. And what says Christmas like overeating, and then sitting in front of the telly, watching James Bond films while we let out sherry farts? It's definitive, that is. Of course, this leaves us with the problem of what to do on the other 364 days of the year. Fear not, reader, for now I have the answer. It's a rare soul who won't acknowledge Live [...]

Listening to CP18 , I remembered I used the Beastie’s song “In 3s†on an old summer mix. I dug it out and got it ready for your enjoyment. The mix of tunes is nearly as hot as the weather. (I guess I was into Python’s Holy Grail when I made this.) 1. Beastie Boys ~ In 3s 2. Beth Orton ~ Daybreaker 3. Erin McKeown ~ Slung Lo [...]
