It's a good week to be a florist. Valentine's Day is around the corner and roses are selling like a product that actually has some practical value. No, I never quite saw the romance in a present that will make you bleed if you hold it the wrong way. I think this is why no one ever gives me roses. That and the fact that I'm a guy.Sexton Blake - Rose Parade (Elliott Smith)You don't forget the

When I moved to Portland last fall, my friend kept telling me that I had to check out this great local band, Blind Pilot . After picking up their album and catching a show at the Aladdin, I was sold. It seems like other people are, too. They're getting high profile recognition on iTunes, NPR, and "Last Call with Carson Daly ". Recently, I was able to ask Blind Pilot drummer and cycler, Ryan Dobrowski , a couple questions via email about their recent success and upcoming plans. [...]

As I've said a lot has been going on the past few months for me. One of the more recent turn of events for me was having PRK surgery to correct my vision. The pain wasn't half as bad as I expected based on my reading of blogs and messages boards on the subject, but the healing time was pretty slow - nearly a month of horribly blurred vision and tired eyes. I'm happy to say I just about have 20/20 vision, something I haven't been able to say since middle school, my eyes still get tired and [...]

Sexton Blake - Betty Davis Eyes (Kim Carnes Cover) Mylo - In My Arms (Kim Carnes Sample) Original : Kim Carnes Bette Davis eyes

It's been a while since I posted up some covers, so here's a general round-up. First up is a pretty faithful acoustic of Oasis' "Don't Look Back In Anger" by Maroon 5, recorded on Jo Whiley's Live Lounge on BBC Radio 1. Also from the excellent Live Lounge series, a funky cover of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" by none other than British pop's premier girl group Girls Aloud. Manic Street Preachers successfully transform Rihanna's classic "Umbrella" into a rocking anthem, worthy of its recent random appearance on the UK Top 40. Also included is Mandy Moore's stripped-back acoustic rendition of "Umbrella." [...]
Lately, whenever an artist has done a cover of another song, I dismissed it as 'Some ass hole trying to break through on HypeMachine." I think some band covered the top song on ELBO.WS for a month or two. It was pretty STUPID. Anyways, KNICKEN posted about Sexton Blake a while ago, and I was pretty into a few of their covers. Mainly "Young Turks" by Rod Stewart and "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes. Here's the video for the original BETTE DAVIS EYES, which certainly sounds like a lot of the crap [...]

It is my honor to share a birthday with a seminal hip hop balladeer, a grunge god, the hands-down master of New Orleans R&B songwriting, and the best soundtrack and pop-americana producer in the business. Since it was too hard to pick just one, instead of focusing on a single artist or genre today, I'm featuring some of my absolutely favorite covers of the work of LL Cool J, Dave Grohl, Allen Toussaint, and T-Bone Burnett, all of whom were born on January 14. If I didn't have an outlet for celebrating these [...]
I feel like on any given day I'd be just as likely to dislike it, but right now I'm sort of in love with Portland (OR) band Sexton Blake's all-covers album, Plays the Hits! Sounds sort of like the all-covers album I've always imagined me (along with my more musically talented friends) making one day. Sexton Blake "I Need Love" (LL Cool J cover) Sexton Blake "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" (Air Supply cover)

Josh Hodges records as Sexton Blake , and recently released a covers album (wait, don't cringe yet) that is satisfying and an enjoyable listen from start to finish. It's a big undertaking to take on Bruce Springsteen ("Hungry Heart"), Elton John ("Daniel"), and Rod Stewart ("Young Turks"). It's possibly a bigger adventure to take on the bizarre or slightly less-deserving like Milli Vanilli ("Girl You Know It's True") or LL Cool J ("I Need Love"). Regardless, the culmination of Sexton Blake Plays The Hits! is worth exploring even if out [...]
