Stop it. Stop it. Just fucking stop it. Don't panic, this is emphatically NOT about pedophilia. Before you get your knickers in a twist have a quick look at the tracklisting, and in particular the band names, and hopefully you will see why the podcast has the name it does. So what am I really on about? Well, I happened across a band recently called Young Girls, and it finally became clear that after Bear Crystal Wolf Fuck Ghost bands, the new fashion is quite clearly paedo bands. Band whose names, whilst not exactly dodgy in themselves, lead [...]

A while back I did a post about Veronica Falls and mentioned that some of their members used to play in the "on-hiatus" band Sexy Kids . However I neglected to include any songs, which is a shame because their song 'Sisters Are Forever' is a great example of UK pop at it's finest. The only thing I can find wrong here is the title of the song. What if you had a sister then she died? That wouldn't really be forever.. right? Too Mean? Also, I just wanted to point out that the two words in the title [...]
Just a few years ago, there was a nice little Glasgow duo called the Sexy Kids, and they had a super good hit called “Sisters Are Forever”. They released an EP of the same name, three more songs after that, and then they disappeared. I searched high and low, but they were officially “on the [...]

So this is it, the first FensePost Podcast. A few weeks ago I sat down and compiled a mix of various songs; some new, some old, most finding some relation to garage rock or garage pop. Hence the title, From The Garage . The theme is loose, so some bands fit and some don't. There are sixteen songs total here, stemming from local Seattle and Portland acts on across the world. New Zealand, Sweden, Canada... you get the picture. Enough banter - listen to the FenseCast already. [...]

It's rare when a single's a-side is bettered by the flip. Rarer still that a cover surpasses the original. But I think both those things happen with Veronica Falls ' debut 7" on Captured Tracks . "Found Love in a Graveyard" made my Favorite Singles of 2009 list when it was just an MP3 floating around on the internet -- indiepop at its sad, romantic best. But what a treat too see they covered Roky Erickson's "Starry Eyes" for the b-side. Roky's take (of which there are many versions) was more twangy power [...]
Yes, that's right! Today marks six months of me doing this. Of being dull (in print) and recording 6 months of songs in my head. Of inadvertently exposing my prejudices, lackings, my stick in the mud-ings regarding music and my commentary on it. Of playing this kind of roulette. It was really easy to do. I missed only those few days i was on holiday. There lies a testament to my ability to wake up in my own bed every morning. And to what a rut i am in. Sliding this experiment into such a rut was no difficult thing. [...]

Cover by Walzac Well, it's Saturday... but just because it's the weekend, doesn't mean we can get our groove on, eh? Real quick, before we get started, wanted to announce we've got another photo contest started, this time over at Tsuru & The Bride !!! Pretty self-explanatory, in my opinion, but just in case... A photo contest where they theme is "Twos". Anything & everything, with some pretty awesome prizes for the winner!!! [...]

Scotland Yard Gospel Choir Like Barry bringing in his Monday Morning Mix into Championship Vinyl in High Fidelity , I offer you all the following. While it might not offer the same level of debate as to who has the better version of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" (the correct answer is Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), it should help get the week started. We start with a hefty dose of indie pop to allow the muscles to warm up. Stop and stretch during the quick instrumental [...]

Fortunately the results weren't quite as Special Branch-alerting as they might well have been. I heard about this band both from Ed over at 17 Seconds , and from Colin who writes And Before the First Kiss , and put them on his 2008 Mixtape which he gave me at Christmas. Oddly, this is a band which has been blogged to death by everyone from here to fucking Timbuktu, but all they really seem to have is a couple of tracks, a seven inch single and a clearly pretty fearsome black belt online marketing strategy. This [...]
Like a gift from the lovely Slumberland Records , the glorious breezy Sisters Are Forever mp3 from a brilliant, but doomed band. Why doomed? Because they're called Sexy Kids. And even if you do throw caution to the wind and stick that into Google, the returns you get aren't going to be modernised-80s-pop-fringe bands. You can find them more directly on their MySpace . Just make sure you can tell your sysadmin "they're a pop group" with a degree of confidence.

Written by Fense Sexy Kids will likely bring a slew of undesirables to FensePost. After all, the term "Sexy Kids" can be taken in a very wrong direction. And the site did see a spike in the search term "Preteen" after we covered Oneida's masterpiece Preteen Weaponry last year. But maybe these sickos will at least go out listening to good music... right? We can only hope. Sisters Are Forever is yet another one of [...]

The folks behind Slumberland Records have amazingly high quality control standards. In fact, all 3 2008 full-length releases by the label made my favorite albums of '08 list (Crystal Stilts, the Lodger, and Cause Co-Motion!). Based on the strength of these three recent 73 releases by the Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Sexy Kids, and Bricolage, the label, originally founded in 1989, has no plans to let up. Download : Pains of Being Pure At Heart - "Everything With You" Download: Sexy Kids - "Sisters Are Forever" [...]

Of all the tracks on yesterday's podcast --which no-bullshit-allowed readers may have deduced is nearly as much '09 preview as '08 wrapup--the one that I'm most feverishly obsessed with is "Sisters are Forever" by Glasgow's Sexy Kids (formed from bits of debris of defunct outfit The Royal We ). Indie-pop is a fickle mistress. The parameters of the genre are pretty strict, and it's easy to fall back on pleasantly produced, though rote hero worship. If cute brogues and polite cuddles were all these Kids had to offer, the result wouldn't have been nearly so [...]
When I asked the very intelligent and capable talent buyer Eli Anderson of the soon-to-be-reopened Crocodile Cafe, I was expecting a list of ten records he liked. Instead, he had sent me several well-written lists and deserves countless bonus points because he even showed his work. read more

So here's my list of best singles, album tracks, and EPs from 2008. Unlike my Best Albums List, songs that were from a 2007 album but were released as singles in 2008 are eligible. But single reissues are not. (Which is why Friendly Fires and Pacific are absent from my list.) With the concept of the "album" diminishing in this world of digital downloads, singles are becoming more important. I'm not calling the death knell for the Album, but if groups whose music leans toward the poppy and immediate side of things wanted to just release singles or EPs every [...]

This year seemed to be the year in which the 73 single returned to prominence. It's not like it ever really went away, but this year bands and labels were putting them out left a right. Vinyl in general, is making a resurgence with the prevalence of file downloading a cd is just a lousy digital copy that takes up too much space, whereas a slab of vinyl is more like a work of art with it being big enough to actually appreciate the cover art. It also comes in many shades, with colored vinyl showing up almost as much [...]
