The conventions of hip-hop are being fleetly tweaked, Shabazz Palaces being the latest to ride the wave of their transitioning genre. Tinges of sub-pop, hip-hop, ambient and urban bass are diffused through much of SB's music, often drawing comparisons to cult favorites like Flying Lotus. Though, it's the deep cutting edge sounds which give Shabazz Palaces their allure. Yeah You is ominous with SB front man Placeer Lazaro sounding almost alien-esque. Black Up is out now. Shabazz Palaces- Yeah You [...]
Fleet Foxes and TV on the Rado headline Pitchfork Saturday and Sunday but I'm far more excited about seeing at least a dozen other bands. I'd be happy to see Zola Jesus Saturday night and then head to the bus stop before the rest of the masses. Likewise on Sunday: Deerhunter is a must-see and it would be great to catch Cut Copy but I'm just not that jazzed about TV on the Radio . As I said before , the early bands are [...]

So, this little story will likely seem pretty weird to many of you. While I do relish a good local celebrity sighting, I realize an encounter with one may not make for the sexiest story. I'll see musicians walking around town all the time (my wife claims she almost ran over Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold with her car once, which would've totally ALTERED HISTORY), or, once, I offered my seat in the cramped confines of the Pike St. Fish Fry to Almost Live funnywoman Nancy Guppy . I think we even shared a few laughs (LOL). [...]
Like Butler says in his opening verse 'Don't compare my beat with his'. There has never been a more truer statement as Shabazz Palaces are incomparable in 2011's hip hop scene

The 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival is going down this weekend in Chicago and as in past years ( 2008 , 2009 , 2010 ) I Rock Cleveland will be there with photographer Mara Robinson to document this yearly gathering of music fans, hipsters, aging indie rockers, and other assorted cool people with questionable sartorial sense. One of the festival's greatest strengths, and one of the reasons I keep going back is its freshness and diversity of performers. During Pitchfork's three days of music you'll see classic indie acts (Guided by Voices, Superchunk, and Sonic Youth's Thurston [...]

Shabazz Palaces celebrating his celebral contender and mindfuck Black Up . Black Up takes the former Digable Planets braintrust Butterfly right into the current landscape, his own. Image by Leif Podhajsky . via GVB Shabazz Palaces - "Recollections of the Wraith (Daytrotter session)" -mp3

Slick, primal and captivating, critically-acclaimed hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces stepped into Big Orange Studios to further take 2011 by storm with a session on Daytrotter. While in Austin, Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and crew slightly reworked the tracks "Toooonmiiiight," "An Echo From Hosts That Profess Infinitum," "Emblazoned on Ice" and "Blastit..." to incorporate some of the live feel with the crafted and mastered. Stream and download "Tooonmiiiight" here and head over to Daytrotter for the rest, plus words from Sean Moeller. He once more brought the magic as he spins a huge analogy [...]

Shabazz Palaces brought their mpcs and clap machines to the Day Trotter Family (Big Orange Studios?). Amongst the 4 track recording are 2 tracks from their recent, mind-blowing, debut full length Black Up (sub pop) and 2 oldie faves from the Of Light / ST EPs. If your not on these guys, clear some space out so you can space out. You can get the full DT session over here . mp3 - Shabazz Palaces - Blastit... While we put together our list of the best albums of the first half of 2011, I'd like to take some time to reflect on two records that received the coveted 5 out of 5 rating here at Potholes. First, there's Beastie Boys' return-to-form showcase Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 , an album so refreshing and full of energy that it makes you wonder if they have stumbled upon the fountain of youth. Falling into similar territory is Shabazz Palaces' amazing Black Up . It's difficult to fully explain just [...]
As you know, I dug the hell out of that new Shabazz Palaces album , Black Up . So, I'm happy to present two pieces of live magic from the project: A Daytrotter session and a video shot by the good people at KEXP. Bon Appétit! Stream: Shabazz Palaces @ Daytrotter

[image by leif podhajsky ] Shabazz Palaces stopped by Big Orange in Austin back in March during SXSW to record a session for our friends at Daytrotter . I heard of Shabazz Palaces via Constant Gardner and Pretty Much Amazing , who gave praise to the group's latest album Black Up . I was already late by the time I got into it, so I'm happy that this video popped up and provided an excuse to post. If you haven't already heard Shabazz Palaces, definitely check them out. Led by Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, formerly of Digable Planets, Shabazz Palaces feature hints of a simplistic, old school style in their music. Besides those hints, nothing about the music is typical. It's avant-garde on some [...]

With the hype surrounding Odd Future starting to (slightly) die down, we'd like to draw your attention to a hip-hop group who are pushing things much further sonically and one whom the majority of the UK seem to have missed thus far. Shabazz Palaces have just released their debut LP "Black Up" and it's overflowing with some of the most inventive hip-hop we've heard since the likes of Cannibal Ox and DJ Vadim first invaded our ears around 15 years ago. Given the timing, Odd Future comparisons are inevitable, but where Tyler [...]
Unorthodox hip hop enthusiasts Shabazz Palaces have been receiving a whole wad of kudos- particularly from us -for their most recent debut full length, Black Up , being hailed by most as the rap album of the year (mind you, there is still the new Das Racist, Cool Kids, and Ye & Hova collaboration to come out). The collective lead by Palaceer Lazaro recently stopped by KEXL Radio station in Seattle and recorded a live session of album highlight “Bop Hard.” Continue reading: New Shabazz Palaces - [...]
We love Shabazz Palaces, there is no doubt about that. So whenever the guys drop something new, which is undoubtedly dope, we have got to share that with you. Continuing the promotional tear of the recently released, and highly acclaimed Black Up , we now get the visuals for a live performance on KEXP. You can also refer to the Hood To Hood performance they did for KEXP a while back. The performance is electrifying, as Shabazz play both digital and analog instruments, adding their captivating vocals all the while. [...]
