[ ~scape ] ( buy vinyl ) (buy mp3s tk) Of the new generation of dubstep producers, Sam Shackleton has proven himself to be the most receptive to crossing over with other genres in a mutually back-scratching manner. After famously remixing and being remixed by Ricardo Villalobos, Shackleton has more favors returned here. Reprising a combo first seen on last year's Steingarten remixes project , Shackleton has two tracks from his forthcoming Skull Disco full-length remixed by Pole and Peverelist for a special vinyl release from ~scape, [...]

Shackleton - "Soundboy's Suicide Note" [Skull Disco] (buy) Skull Disco celebrate their 10th release with four killer cuts of dark, cold, atmospheric & ultra deep dubstep/... tracks from label boss Sam Shackleton. "Soundboy's Suicide Note" is Shackleton's darkest & finest EP to date to come from this ground breaking label where once again we have the pleasure of Vengeance Tenfold on vocals who some of you will remember from Shackleton's earlier release this year which was also released on Skull Disco - "Death Is Not Final". The Rope Tightens is a dark & mysterious trip into shackleton's wonderfully fucked up world. Coming straight in with Tenfold's claustrophobic mon ologue and Shackleton's dark uneasy textures, [...]

After hoofing at least 10 miles throughout the day on Saturday we wisely decided to catch the bus most of the way Sunday afternoon. Sunday's schedule featured the least well known acts of the weekend, and oddly enough I ended up catching portions of 16 acts that day (17 if you count the two gents shown above). The day started off with singer/songwriter Tyrone Wells. If the O.C. was still on television (is it?) I'm sure Tyrone would have made an appearance, and if it wasn't for a decent story he told of an encounter with James [...]

Some good news today out of American Werewolf Academy camp: Apparently, the band's been getting some radio love both domestically and across the pond. The song "Company of Owls," off the band's new disc, Triceratops (which Jesse Hughey diligently reviewed in this wee's paper), has popped up on the playlist of New Jersey's WFMU . And, perhaps more impressive, this U.K. Internet radio show starts each broadcast with AWA's "Rock Show Tonight," from the band's Devil, Spit It Out album. High fives all around, fellas. [...]

It's my birthday this saturday and Shackleton is playing live! (may be...

As a result of several things-the fact that I've recently fallen in love with Hipster Runoff to the point where I want to BE THEM (do you hear that, HRO? I WANT YOU INSIDE ME!), the fact that Hacks is all about day-glo dinosaurs and stuff that's totally not at all French but wants to be and Trixie wishes she could live in the second NES Zelda game (yeah, the one that was impossible to beat but kind of rocked-I had that gold cartridge which meant, I think, that I was either one of the first or one [...]

So, as soon as I pick up my Wayfarer's, chino shorts and Sebago docksides in anticipation of continuing fine weather, it rains! Not happy. To celebrate - a brooding dubstep triumph from the Skull Disco camp. Shackleton - Death Is Not Final (T++ Remix) ( alt link ) T++ takes Shackleton 's original with a stunning techno revision, riding rock hard subbass depth [...]

The Shocking Pinks are back with a new E.P 'Emily' which features remixes from the likes of Nathan Fake, Deepchord, Lee Douglas & this one from the Expanding Head . They take one of the standout tracks (Cutout) from their self titled long player & turn it into a hypnotic, percussive groove. Awesome. The Shocking Pinks- Cutout (Expanding Head remix) (Z Share) (YSI) Shackleton continues to blur the boundaries between Dubstep & Techno on his latest release 'Death is not Final' via Skull Disco records. Deep, [...]

The new Shackleton/T++ 12" on Skull Disco is the latest confirmation of the label's status as a stolid purveyor of trans-dubstep Fourth World music. T++ had a pretty high standard to meet for this project, considering that the last remix of Shackleton released on Skull Disco was the Villalobos remix of "Blood on My Hands." While the original mix of Shackleton's percussive 4/4 workout uses acoustic drum samples to create a warm, tactile space, T++ converts the beats into a fragmentary computer language - space and time come unhinged, the extensive becomes [...]

Spent a good deal of last night puzzling over this key question / Spinal Tap conundrum: what do the numbers on a stereo volume button represent? My new stereo goes up to 30 (which is really loud) but I'm not sure what that means. It can't be some absolute measure of loudness - each number can't relate to a particular decibel level because even at the same number different CDs are louder or quieter, as always. So if there is no absolute relationship between the numbers on my stereo and actual loudness is there instead a relative relationship? Does 10 [...]

Well, it happened. Friday I literally ran to the bank before it closed, so we could open the LLC account and begin to work with our potential investors. It was a glimmer of a future where Speaking in Code, the film, becomes a reality. To learn how to invest in the film, which will be a unique film about the world of electronic music, email the director . Like we said sometime last year, it's The Techno Movie That's Not About Techno . In the meantime, the record business is in such turmoil the Wall Street [...]
It's my first Haji-free mix! Not quite girly house, not quite indie fare; shall we call it Yorkie House? It's chunky and thick and not for girls*. While I often mix with my pals, Kev & Garv's spacious dining room in mind, I don't think this one will suit. It's a tad harder in places than [...]

All Hallows Eve is still a few weeks away, but one creepy crawly record that's getting a lot of pre-Halloween play here at Idolator is Soundboy Punishments , a two CD collection of singles from England's Skull Disco label that will be released on Rough Trade on Oct. 23. Run by gloomy producers Shackleton and Appleblim, Skull Disco's music blends the desolate, reggae-tinged sway of London dubstep with tribal house beats that are downright haunted and all sorts of phantasmic effects designed to wig you out on late night walks with your iPod. (Ghouls and [...]

There's been a lot of talk in recent months about techno and dubstep getting ever closer and Villalobos' remix of Shackleton 's Blood on my Hands has been one of the most hyped records of the year. It finally got released this week and weighs in at 18 minutes of extremely dark minimalism. It's out on the prolific Skull Disco label who have had a number of critically acclaimed releases which have now been collated onto a double pack CD also out this week. Shackleton - Blood on my [...]
