I was sleep on Shad ! Then again, putting Oddisee production under anything pretty much serves as musical no-doze. This remix of Shad's " Yaa I Get It " is super soulful and absolutely deserves to be on Blind I. Check out the stream and then after you geek out like I did, indulge thine self! As 2010 has progressed hip hop has shown a few signs of digging itself out of its six foot hole. There hasn't been a steady stream of notable releases, but efforts from Nas and Damian Marley , The Roots , Big K.R.I.T. , and Reflection Eternal most likely have some of the purists breathing some sort of sigh of relief. Enter under-the-radar emcee from London, Ontario... Shad . While mainstream darling Drake has had the spotlight on Toronto and the Canadian hip hop [...]
"Now my name ain't Lil' Wayne Gretzky, but y'all know better than to check me. In the game, my whole record's like a technique." Meet Shadrach Kabango, aka Shad, a 28-year old Canadian rapper from London, Ontario. Well known and widely respected in Canada for his distinctive mix of social politics and cheeky humor, Shad is [...]

I'm not one to get pumped over a music video, but this shit right here is just wild. Not to mention the song itself has been getting tons of plays over here. Shad's got some nice flow, and it's perfect on top of the sample. Back to the video... I had like a Sixth Sense "Oh shit" moment when the video transitioned from backwards to forwards seamlessly. Oscar worthy performance by whoever this director was. Check it out below, and props to The J's in the Shoutbox for the heads up. Download: Shad - [...]

Excellent Canadian MC, Shad is finally getting ready to release his acclaimed TSOL album in the US. With the short list announced coincidentally close to Canada Day, the Polaris Music Prize has been cleverly disguised as an icon of national pride. The saga of Polaris says that not only are we geographically gargantuan as a nation, but musically we’re in fine proportion to our size. It takes time to look at all the details, since we as a nation put out an obscene amount of music, but an award like Polaris gives us great cause to wear out our Canadian vinyl through the summer months. From the Besnard Lakes to Broken Social Scene and from Shad to [...]

Sorry for the lateness on singles chart #13. Due to being busy at Ottawa Bluesfest. There is a Bluesfest theme since half the acts played there. Some oldies and new tracks. Take a look at this week's top 10. This Week Last Week Total Weeks Artist Songs 1 2 6 [...]

Phil Harder I was going to skip posting today entirely but a few choice bits came up on the radar that merited a quick mention - most notably, the announcement of Bettie Serveert's Autumn North American tour that had been promised since their latest album - the surprisingly rowdy Pharmacy Of Love - was released back in march. Amongst those dates is a September 28 appearance in Toronto at the Drake Underground, the Dutch rockers' first visit since a barn-burner of a set at [...]
Here is this week's music singles chart. I have been busy with Bluesfest and since its #12, the festival is 12 days of music. So I decided to make Basia Bulat #1 this week after seeing her performance on July 10th . Five new debuts this week. Two fallers and three risers. Check out the chart This Week Last Week Total Weeks Artist Songs [...]

Featuring Shad , Eternia , Masia One , Rich Kidd , Tona and a grip of other T.dot artists I've supported here at The Kitchen in the past. Tdot heads holla at me though 'cos I'm gonna be at the spot tonight and at the BHF tomorrow. Who's in town for these shows?? HEADS UP though for those heading to Southpaw tonight. [...]

(photo: Richmond Lam) Yesterday afternoon, in the sweltering heat of a Southern Ontario summer stinger, the Polaris Music Prize announced the 2010 Short List of 10 albums up for the best Canadian album of 2009-2010. Here's the way things shape up: Of the 10 albums, five of the artists are previous shortlisters ( The Besnard Lakes , Broken Social Scene , Caribou , Owen Pallett and Shad [...]

Amanda Schenk Two and a half weeks after announcing what a panel of unadventurous, sexist, regionally biased and indie-rockist media types had collectively decided were the 40 best Canadian albums of the past year, the Polaris Music Prize yesterday whittled said list down to a short list of ten , thus helping narrow the pool of records that everyone will complain are unworthy of recognition for the next two and a half months until a final overrated and predictably mainstream record is selected by a jury of people who are obviously pursuing their [...]
Forget the World Cup, the most truly awesome competition in the world (well, maybe just North America) is for the Polaris Music Prize . The four-year-old award has taken its hefty list of 2010 nominees and announced (via Pitchfork ) the shortlist of 10 bands, one of whom will eventually call themselves the best Canadian band of 2010 (and that means something to us.) In case you forgot, this is for albums released from June 1st, 2009 through May 31st, 2010. The eventual winners receive their spot on top, along with a big, [...]
