I am not a juror member of the Polars Music Prize (Wish I was). But I would like to give my predictions on who I feel or might be on the shortlist for the Polaris Music Prize. The shortlist will be announced on July 6, 2010. Here are my 10 predicitons: The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night They were nominated in the inaugural year of Polaris. I [...]
Here is this week's music singles chart. No big change except for a few debuts. After seeing Shad play on Canada Day was amazing so I added Rose Garden in the chart. I am really loving Expo 86 by Wolf Parade and added two song in the chart. Check out the chart This Week Last Week Total Weeks Artist Songs [...]

Shad on Canada Day. He blew the stage off on Canada Day at Confederation Park. It was a wicked set. Not sure why he played the tent, he should have played the Main Stage where Owen Pallett later played that day. It was my first time seeing him play live. Well if you consider NXNE 2009 as one since he made a surprise during Grand Analog's set . Here are the rest of the photos. [...]

Ryan Marr Toronto's Forest City Lovers began essentially as a pseudonym for singer-songwriter Kat Burns, and while ably assisted by members of Toronto's burgeoning music community her debut The Sun & The Wind was accordingly spare, but still gave hints to her broader pop ambitions. 20082s Haunting Moon Sinking found Forest City Lovers no longer a pseudonym but a proper band and accordingly, it was a much fuller and rangier affair with a few moments of pure pop bounce amidst the more contemplative [...]

With his trusted DJ Teelo and a bassist/keyboardist at his side, Shad conquered the Montreal Jazz Fest last nite. A setlist consisting of songs from his new and just short listed for the Polaris Music Prize (2nd time in a row for Mr. Kabango) album "TSOL" and songs from his previous LP "The Old Prince". Killer wordplay, amazing flow and [...]
A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]

Christine Lim Though not technically related, yesterday afternoon's announcement of this year's Polaris Music Prize long list in the midst of all the NXNE hubbub was no coincidence. What better time to reveal the consensus cream of the Can-con crop than in the smack dab in the middle of one of the biggest festivals and conferences in the country? A perusal of the 40 albums that made the cut reveals a lot of the names I'd have expected, based on factors such as public profile, track record and oh yeah, artistic merit, [...]

Filed under: News , Canada As NXNE kicked off in Toronto, organizers of the Polaris Prize took advantage of the spotlight on music to announce the 40-album long list for the esteemed annual award for best Canadian album. Hosted by CBC Radio 3's Grant Lawrence, the event drew media and music-industry types to Toronto's Drake Hotel to find out which artists had made it past the first round of voting by the 198-member jury -- made up of music writers, broadcasters and bloggers from across [...]

Frank Yang This past Saturday night was one of those evenings with absolutely no shortage of options for Toronto concert-goers - and that's even before Arcade Fire showed up to siphon off another 1000 people or so to the east end - so I wasn't sure how well the Toronto debut for both Sweden's First Aid Kit and Oklahoma's Samantha Crain at The Rivoli would do, particularly since I heard that First Aid Kit's free in-store at Criminal Records earlier that afternoon [...]

Frank Yang "Thanks for coming out on such short notice." It was hard to tell if Win Butler was smirking when he said this, midway through the first night of Arcade Fire's surprise two-night stand at the Music Hall in Toronto this past Friday night. After all, they had given the city just over 48 hours notice that these performances would be happening - though they did offer teasers throughout the week - prompting a mad scramble of canceled plans and fake sick days so that fans could line up for the one-per-person admission [...]

Jason Creps The first thing you notice about The New Pornographers' latest album Together is the unison electric guitar and cello line that opens the first track, "Moves". The second thing you notice is that you probably didn't notice it at all. The band who first burst onto the scene at the turn of the century with the giddily live wire Mass Romantic transformed themselves from power-pop to orch-pop over the course of their five albums in the past decade that the [...]

Frank Yang This is the weekend that myself and other music writers from across the country feverishly cram on Canadian albums released over the past 12 months to assemble our votes for this year's Polaris Music Prize , and while I don't have any particular insight into how any of the other jurors are voting, I am willing to bet dollars to donuts that the words Shad and TSOL will be getting typed into the online ballot more than a few times. It's certainly going in [...]

Okay, everyone knows I'm a fan of Shadrach Kabango aka SHAD! He recently released his third full-length TSOL and is picking up where he left off with The Old Prince. Relentless touring, media support, and great vids. Shad's going across Canada with Grand Analog and D-Sisive. Check out the new video for Rose Garden. TONIGHT-6/3 - Vancouver, BC @ The Biltmore w/Grand Analog 6/4 - Victoria, BC @ Sugar Nightclub w/Grand Analog 6/5 - Kelowna, BC @ Habitat w/Grand Analog 6/6 - Calgary, AB @ Republik [...]

Sunday, June 27, St. Catharines, Ontario is going to shake, rattle and roll when the 15th S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival takes over 17 stages set up at 13 venues for a single day of intense musical alchemy. It started back in 1995 as a showcase event for local talent, and still boasts a great line-up of local bands alongside a diverse collection of artists from across Canada. This year's line-up was recently announced, and a number of QBiM favourtites are slated to perform: Bronx Cheerleader , Magneta Lane, Modernboys Moderngirls , [...]

Dope, dope, dope, dope. What else can I say? Shad, aka "Rakim - North Pole Edition", has just dropped his first video from his latest album, TSOL, and it's for the lead track "Rose Garden". I don't think this is available in the US as of yet, but if you're states-side then you need to [...]
