Frank Yang Considering that Friday afternoon was arguably one of the best blocks of music experiences I've ever had at SxSW, it figured that the karma pendulum would have to swing the other way sooner or later. As it happened, it was sooner. The official portion of the day started downstairs at Waves, a narrow little venue on 6th, where Shad was kicking things off. You can insert my standard "not really a hip-hop guy" disclaimer here, but I really grew to like his The Old Prince Still Lives [...]
Just because we're down in Austin, doesn't mean we'd forget about you - or your weekly mp3 fix. Below, we've compiled a special SXSW mixtape, chock full of goodies we think are pretty damn, well, neat. Of course, it wouldn't be a CoS influenced mixtape if it didn't have our personal favorites *ahem* who happen to play in our showcase *ahem*. That's not to say there aren't a few other artists outside our proverbial reach/influence, so take what you will. Also, we threw in a baker's dozen (and more!) of new singles, remixes, etc. Oh how we spoil [...]

Entitled simply as Listen! , this year's event is designed to highlight six of music's most talented up-and-comers in one night, under one roof. In the days leading up to the event, we'll be taking a closer look at these acts… " Brother please, no more Pamela Lees, let's set it straight I'm the biggest thing out of Canada til Quebec separate " [...]

[ OkayPlayer ] A last minute addition to the BrooklynVegan party at Pianos during CMJ 2008, rapper Shad was one of that hazy day's highlights and a definite crowd pleaser. He played solo, backed by his DJ, and even [...]

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 Well, hello. I didn't see you there. I'm so glad you could join me as I revel in my biweekly realty (the opposite of sub-prime) here on SOTO. Today I bring you a selection of kid-tested, mother-approved hip-hop gems that I've been enjoying these past few weeks. Remember, the only way to know if you like it is to listen to it! : Zion I - The Caged Bird (Featuring Brother Ali) : Duo Zion I out of Oakland, CA, consists of producer AmpLive [...]
More from that Canadian kid, Shad I posted on the other day . Very much more serious on this one. Listen, I like the G and ig'nant sh-t as much as the next guy, but I am co-signing the sentiment of this song 200%. Online: Shad - MySpace | Website
Some of you probably saw this months ago when it first came out. This is Canadian too but I can't even say "Tdot, stand up" 'cos homeboy's actually from London, Ontario, a college town a couple hours away from Toronto. So this is wild cheesy but at the same time, kind of genius (and very funny). It's basically a scene-by-scene remake of the opening to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air TV show. Dude can really rhyme though - he reminds me of Murs or some other backpack rappers whose music I don't really [...]

I wasn't going to let the frigid temperatures this past Saturday night stop me from taking in a few of the free events happening in TOronto. First up I headed down to Nathan Phillips Square to catch some of the evening WinterCity theatrical performance [a nautical-themed piece] , then sets from Shad and Thunderheist. Shad, with bassist and DJ, performed some cuts off his album "The Old Prince" and even busted out some freestyle acappella style when his DJ was having some technical difficulties. He asked us if we liked '80's music to which the audience cheered then Shad and [...]

Die Roten Punkte This week, Thunderheist and Shad top a series of FREE weekend shows in Toronto; the Rhubarb and Weesageechak Festival s open at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille, respectively; Ruby Coast and Winter Gloves headline a rock solid night of indie music at the Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday; Bad Dog Theatre's Globehead Tournament ramps up to the finals [...]

I forgot about including the inclusion of movie reviews with music. I recently saw both Milk and Slumdog Millionaire which seem to be candidates for movie of the year. Anyway, while Juno was a popular indie flick to see at first, it got tiresome fast. Slumdog Millionaire didn't look appealing at first, you know a romance film? The critical and fan reception was quite high though and being late on Christmas day with either an opportunity to see Yes Man or Slumdog Millionaire, the right choice was made. Here's my playlist for the movie. [...]

It's Christmas Eve and the festive-booze is about to start flowing. The next few days are likely to be packed, so I thought I'd better get the second part of my favourite Canadian songs of 2008 done before the holiday fun starts. If you missed part 1, here it is . Otherwise, on to the second half. Once again, these songs are arranged in a mixtape order that I found pleasing ( download the whole thing in a zip file here ): Human Highway - The Sound ( Moody Motorcycle [...]

Coming up with a list of ten great songs is significantly more difficult than coming up with a list of ten great albums for the simple reason that a study of the most basic mathematics suggests that songs usually outnumber albums by about 50 to 1. (OK, I randomly pulled that number out of a hat but I think that I've made my point...) Unlike last year's list however, there was no one song that really stood out above the rest for me. Therefore all eleven songs this year are basically tied for first place and the basic thing that [...]
I barely watch music videos to be honest, but of the few I've seen I guess they've been good enough to warrant some consideration as the top videos of the year. Anyway here are my choices but I do warn that I probably haven't seen a lot of good ones. 5. Old Prince Still Lives At Home by Shad What more can I say about this video? Instead of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, you have the Old Prince of London, Ontario. It's a funny parody that comes from a simple idea [...]
Its hard to recall the last time San Fransisco based Deerhoof had a bad record. They're newest one is slightly weirder than their previous releases but still possesses the likability that many indie-pseudo art rock rock bands try so hard to achieve. A couple other bay area bands have also pop-ed up on my radar: Experimental Dental School and KIT . Both are fairly solid rock acts the former being a straight up guitar/drum duo and the latter being noise rock. Both have that nwe band freshness that I find so appealing. There are also [...]

listentofeist.com This past Friday, I (Heart) Music posted the results of his fourth annual, "Hottest Bands In Canada" poll - the ultra-unscientific survey of online Canadian music types wherein we submit a ranked list of the Canadian acts that we deem the "hottest" by whatever definition of the word we wish to use. Though I managed to get my list in just under the wire, on account of being ultra-busy and distracted the last few weeks, I don't know if I gave it the utmost amount of thought that I might have [...]
