Well I'll drop you five sweet songs that you should listen to once a week, that will help you get over your mid-week slump and set sail towards the ever-nearing weekend! Ready? Okay! Jamie McDell - Life In Sunshine This lass is as beautiful as she is talented, and I happily purchased a signed copy of her debut album Six Strings And A Sailboat [...]

Former Eurovision contestant Sébastien Tellier gains the help of French duos Statue and Apolline D’Ash for a wonderful motionless bounce of cross-pollinated techno & house, alongside Apolline D’Ashs’ version that seems longer than the time stamp insists. Following on from a progressive journey of space, time and sound courtesy of Apolline D’Ash, Statue solider on with a gentle, but dirty n’ phazy ‘We Own The World’ take, simplified greatly by ‘Heaven’ - which ups the disco glitter spins two-fold. A satisfying resolution results in a Gossip remix marred [...]

Andréa de Keijzer Shaking out the "Made in Canada" box to kick off the week. L Con is the sort-of but not-really pseudonym for Lisa Conway, perhaps better known as the voice of Toronto's moody, art-orch ensemble Del Bel , who've been wholly endorsed in these parts. Conway just released her solo debut as L Con in The Ballad Project and while it doesn't necessarily put a lot of sonic distance between itself and Del Bel's Oneiric [...]
This here video is the epitome of Friday Fun - Shad's new video for It Ain't Over , his Lenny Kravitz-sampling gem from his last EP, the fantastic Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness . As you no doubt remember, that EP was chock full of jams that pulled from 902s classics, so it's only right that Shad takes it back to his youth for the vid: VHS, Hammer tapes and rapping into a comb until your dream girl appears in acid wash with a bag of chips. I mean isn't that what we all wished would happen when [...]
Shad 's video for "It Ain't Over" opens with a plea to Lenny Kravitz who, along with being "uncommonly talented and handsome," also serves as the refrain for the song thanks to a sample of his 1991 hit, "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over." Assuming the London, Ontario rapper doesn't hear from Kravitz's lawyers any time soon, the artist né Shadrach Kabango can spend his time wooing his dream girl with chips and cola. Check out the video for the nostalgia-laden track above. "It Ain't Over" appears on Shad's digital-only EP, Melancholy And The [...]
Potholes favorite Shad is one of those artists who likes to live by the old adage of quality over quantity. He doesn't hit us with an endless barrage of mixtapes, EPs, albums, videos, singles, etc... Instead, he likes to take his time and give us new music when he sees fit, like this past July when he dropped the Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness EP. The project features the London, Ontario native rapping over chopped-up versions of his favorite early '90s singles, from the Breeders' "Cannonball" to PM Dawn's "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss". [...]

Norman Wong Okay, since I am posting this from the north of Quebec - okay, not really that north, but considerably further north than Bloor St. in Rouyn-Noranda for this year's Festival de musique émergente - I figure this is as good a time as any to run a pretty sweet giveaway for - wait for it - The North . As in the new record from Stars , out this coming Tuesday. Thanks to the folks at Universal Music Canada , I have numerous copies of The [...]

Remember that impromptu EP Shad dropped not long ago sampling a bunch of tracks from his childhood? Well, it looks like he hasn't forgotten about it either, as he drops some makeshift visuals to accompany lead track, "A Milli Vanilli". Filling the video with more nostalgia than one could ever imagine fitting in a one-minute clip, Shad hops around spitting flavorful bars behind VHS-quality filters. That was a ton of fun. Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness is out now and free to download.

Sebastian Mlynarski I expect there's a lot of interest in drawing parallels between the success of Purity Ring with that of Grimes what with both being based out of Montreal - although Purity Ring's Corin Roddick and Megan James originally hail from Edmonton - and releasing albums of electronic pop that seem to be the perfect soundtracks for the zeitgeist circa 2012, and on the same label outside of Canada, no less - the legendary 4AD . But whereas Claire Boucher's work is rather defined by its technicolor ADD-ness and her [...]

My first introduction to hip hop came by way of De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising , a sample-rich concept album that was more party than political. It was the familiarity of the samples (whether I could identify them clearly or not was a moot point) that drew me in then, and it's what I'm loving most about Shad 's new, free mixtape, Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness . Building beats around samples from Milli Vanilli, The Breeders, Lenny Kravitz, Prince and PM Dawn, then dropping his too-cool-for-old-school rhymes over [...]

Facebook Custom dictates that for tenth anniversaries, the traditional gift is something made from tin and the modern equivalent is aluminum. Or diamond. How on earth do you get from tin to diamond? Happily, Toronto's Paper Bag Records pays no attention to such convention and to mark their tenth year of releasing great music from both Canada and abroad, they've opted to put together three nights of shows at The Great Hall from September 27 to 29 and featuring the best of their current roster as well as a surprise and welcome return [...]
Welcome back for this week's edition of Straight No Chase , your one-stop shop source for all things hip-hop here on EARMILK . This comprehensive weekly feature aims to share hip-hop based content we may have missed during the past week, while also highlighting memorable content we did cover. In addition to the recap of our best hip-hop posts, SNC also includes a Video of the Week, Project of the Week, and a brief list of recently released noteworthy projects and upcoming releases. As any hip hop head worth their salt knows, these days music floods the blogosphere by the millisecond. Consequently, [...]

This here post would normally be a perfect candidate to be prefixed with the "Friday Fun" moniker, but the great title Shad has given his latest EP/album is a little too long to make that possible. No worries though, because once you give your ear holes the chance to hear Shad kicking the ballistics over tracks that sample jams from folks like Milli Vanilli, The Breeders, Lenny Kravitz, Prince and PM Dawn (in that order), there won't be any doubt that the fun quotient here is high. Plus, there's a chance that this title would piss off Corgan [...]
You'll all remember Shad from "Rose Garden," both for the infectious soul sample, as well as the mind-bending music video. He just recently released a mini project, with productions sampling some of his favorite songs as a kid. "It Ain't Over" is the one I keep coming back to. Pick it up below, and check out the project in it's entirety over at Shad's Bandcamp page. [via Hilly Dilly] Tweet
melancholy and the infinite shadness by Shad Canadian rapper Shad is as clever as he is entertaining to listen to. I guess you could say his wit is why he's interesting to listen to. The dude dropped an album I wasn't too hot on a few years ago, but it was mostly because of the hooks and production, not his skills on the mic. Shad now has a new, free EP of tracks out, and it's pretty much just him spittin' raw over some straightforward boom-y [...]
