As I mentioned in my last post, last Friday I (Heart) Music had posted the annual Hottest Bands In Canada list. I gave a few comments about my choices and omissions, etc. but after noticing that Mike at For The Records put up his personal choices, well, copycat that I am, I figured that I'd do the same. Each of us who contributed to the list were basically given only two rules: the bands had to be Canadian, and they had to have a particularly "hot" year. We were aloud to define [...]

Shad ( MySpace / MP3 ) White Lies ( MySpace / MP3 ) Wye Oak ( MySpace / MP3 ) Sharon Van Etten ( MySpace / MP3 ) Sebastien Grainger ( MySpace / MP3 )

The current Canadian Hip Hop scene seems to have a particular love for 1990, and really, I can't blame 'em. 1990 was a bright, colourful and fun year, just before the brooding Seattle grunge scene took over. Two particular Canadian rappers have embraced 1990 and spun it with their own fresh style. The Old Prince (2007) Shad has fully embraced 1990 with his recent video The Old Prince Still Lives at Home . The video is is a full re-enactment of the opening sequence to [...]

I'm jealous of quite a few people. My friend Luther , for instance, is a talented multi-instrumentalist who actually gets paid to play and write about music, my dad can build or understand just about anything and there's a guy down the street who owns his own toy store. Everywhere I look there's someone to envy and last week that list got a little longer with the birth of Jenny Omnichord 's baby boy, Otis. You see, on the day of his birth little baby Otis was greeted by an entire album of duets made in [...]

I can feel the fury-there's blood boiling and hair being pulled. Angry bloggers everywhere are grinding their teeth as they feverously mash their keyboards in indignation at...wait...they gave the prize to Caribou ?...Oh, I guess that's not so bad. The Polaris Prize is a curious beast. I don't know anyone who champions its relevance or even cares who wins, but I'll be damned if everyone doesn't like to argue about the worthiness of the nominees. It reminds me of every time a magazine would publish its list of the best albums of all time-no one [...]

Tonight is the annual gala to announce the winner of the Polaris Music Prize , the award given to the best Canadian album of the previous year, "judged solely on artistic merit". The winner tonight will leave with their record amongst the likes of previous winners Patrick Watson ( Close to Paradise ) and Final Fantasy ( He Poos Clouds ), the knowledge that a bunch of music journalists really dug their shit, and one of those gigantic cheques for $20,000. This is when I go on record to proclaim [...]

In just 8 hours Canada's 2008 Polaris Music Prize winner will be announced, however, this year seems to be a mixture of relatively unknown artists in comparison to last year's nominated Arcade Fire and Feist (who lost to Patrick Watson ). Of course there is Stars , but personally speaking I don't believe that In Our Bedroom After the War is stronger than Set Yourself On Fire which is enough to keep the gold out of their hands. My vote is running for Holy [...]
Well here we are, the day before eleven judges decide on the winner of this year's Canadian indie music gem, the Polaris Prize , and I sit here wondering whom I would select as the one I would put my fight up for winning. To put my struggle in perspective, the potential winners are listed below. Now I could take the easy way out and pick whom I feel is the most popular and most likely to win, but even that is very subjective. I could scour the hundreds of articles and diatribes of which each writer giving their [...]

Hey Ocean! - Vagabond (feat. Shad K) + download via zshare Well, I almost bought the Hey Ocean! underwear at the merch table. But it looked a little big, and oversized underwear is one of my pet peeves. **** Last night was a first of sorts for me. I get more than a few requests from promoters to go to shows, but this was the first time I've actually taken someone up on the offer. Most of this is for [...]

Buy the Ticket, Take The Ride. I'd like to think that everything I do is in good taste. I know that's not true. That's just not my style. I think if everything I do is reasonable, then I'm likely to be... uh... status quo. Actually, I don't reason out my bad taste, that whole thing I just said is an after thought. The truth is I go with my own sense of the world, which means sometimes I'm ahead of the curve, sometimes I'm behind, and very rarely am i ever right on. This might be some [...]

Yes I know what you're thinking, why is this review so late, but I'm hoping you can forgive me for that transgression and enjoy the review I've got for you. Saturday was day one of the festival, and as all of you know the Foo Fighters were the headlining band. For those of you who love them, they were fantastic, and for those who don't I won't say anything more. Saturday though, I spent a lot of time wandering around the festival, going from stage to stage checking out some of the [...]

Maybe not entirely new this week, but a new album counts right? Vancouver foursome Hey Ocean! have been creating a small buzz across the country ever since their first release in 2006. The amazing voice of singer Ashleigh Ball was what first got my attention. Her rich harmonies and melodies seamlessly blend with some pretty catchy riffs and percussion which clearly take a little something from the folk, jazz, and pop styles from around the globe. Fans of other west coast talent such as Mother Mother or Immaculate Machine would probably taking a [...]
One of the biggest festivals each year in Toronto (shitty in comparison to other cities) is Virgin Festival on the Toronto Islands. Here's hoping the weather acts up or else we'll continue to be plagued by poor weather during festivals (Rogers Picnic anyone?). The festival is also known as that very expensive festival. Based on the acts, the festival is well worth cost as it's includes the ferry price and if you wanted to see these bands on their own it would cost a boat load more. Festivals are extremely fun though and are awesome experiences. [...]
Totally meta and hilarious, Shad 's video for "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" is probably our favorite thing ever when it comes to send-up's of our youth. We know, the new "90210" series is close, but not quite (Shannen Doherty is still alive, who knew?). The song is old-as-hell (in blog terms) but we missed it last year, so we're taking it to you now. Shad (born Shadrach Kabango) has officially revitalized our belief in there being such a thing as Canadian hip hop with his most recent record, The Old [...]

BOX is back! I'm sure you feared that BOX, our newly-launched recap of random rap songs we receive, was going to be a short-lived experiment like some other sections ( the Big Ups anyone?). Nay, BOX is here for the long haul, and to prove that we've got the second edition ready to roll. Canadian Rap-house, Everlast, Shad as the Fresh Prince, and Heltah Skeltah? Sounds good no? Let's do this. MP3:: Art of Fresh - Forth And Back [...]
A rapper bragging of their big toy purchases and endless-limit credit cards is so prevalent in the hip hop genre that even the most incredible boasts result in minimal ho-hum reactions. So it's a breath of fresh air when Canadian emcee Shad spends all of single "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" relating the joys of being a scrub. Shad still shacks with his parents, doesn't have a car or job
OMG this is OTT. Emerging Canadian hip-hop artist, Shad, premiered his music video entitled "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" today on Pitchfork.tv. Will Smith were you at? The video's director, Hot Dog Garbage, did a stunning job of capturing Shad's vision for the song in this video. With U.S. tour dates to come and the release of The Old Prince sneaking up in October, this is just the beginning for Shad! "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" | download [...]
