Thus Begins the Summer Just for the Sake of it. Ed Mitchell photo FRIENDS & FIRE - Six years ago RSL was setup as one man's creative outlet (and probably a desperate call for help) and now it is something much more. With the work of contributors and readers from around the globe, we are just a little bit closer to a functioning family or [...]

So, the 200th podcast. I remember a couple of years ago when the 100th ticked past, it happened to be a Toad Session, and as those are pre-recorded with little idea when they'll fit into the sequence of Toadcasts I never really marked the milestone in any sort of a way. This time around I was very much conscious of it, but still couldn't really think of a way to make it interesting and, on Thursday night, with no real plan, I just sat down to have a go at editing a compilation consisting of at least one [...]
I've really enjoyed the work of the Shaky Hands , so I'm happy to introduce you to Death Songs , the projects of Nathan and Nicholas of the aforementioned group. They've just released a self-titled 103, and it's full of low-key country-fied jams. This track sounds a bit like early Conor Oberst with a gently strummed guitar to go along with it. Having listened to the whole collection, I'm quite pleased to tell you it's full of great tracks just like this one, so [...]
I wonder, sometimes, how many of you reading this blog have been here for, say, the last four years or so. It was November 2007 when I first moved my old music site over to Blogger, and I am sure one or two people have been around since then, but I am never all that sure. I only mention this because Death Songs hark back to the earlyish days of the blog, and very much to the early days of the Song, by Toad podcasts. Back in those days - mid 2007, I think it was [...]

New: Death Songs - Death Songs 10" EP Slightly less morbid in style than the moniker might suggest, Nick Delffs (also of Castanets , and The Shaky Hands ) is the man behind half Death Songs , a Portland-based indie pop outfit started with his Brother in 2007, set to drop their new self-titled EP on October 4th. From that release comes a rather unconventional Flamenco-influenced take in 'Ophelia', being offered as a free download by the band ahead of the 10" release on Post-Consumer. An evening European shuffle sits contentedly beneath [...]

Good day, fellow Left Behinders! Nice to see you all made it. This seems like the perfect time to drop the new Shaky Hands song, "Mystic Misery," on you, as it's a great celebratory way to start the day. It's been awhile since we heard from the group, (2009's Let It Die ), so this ebullient track arrives at the perfect time, a reminder of the simple fact that it's "good to be alive." The Shaky Hands' new album, Realms Out Of Reach , is available soon. The Shaky Hands - "Mystic [...]

Record Label Page | Myspace | Blog This one is a tad on the old side, it came out in 2007, but I just came across it via the I Guess I am Floating blog. I always try and clap along and always fail miserably. I get that it is 4/4 time and that the clapping happens on the off beat just before the 4th count, but no matter how hard I try, my brain can [...]
![[Mix] IGIF Presents: Endless Summer Vol. I](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2703026_lg.jpg)
[photo via ] There have been many great summer mixes this year, and even a fantastic website set up by Yewknee collecting over fifty of them (!). Without self-fellating the merits of our own blogging establishment, we firmly believe your summer won't be complete without a few listens of our own summer soundtrack. Unless you have the shittiest summer ever (your dog dies, you get dumped, you lose your job, your car blows up, and you're sunburned for about 80 of the 90+ summer days), most of [...]

What's better than the six glorious weeks in summer when Burgerville dishes up Walla Walla onion rings and strawberry smoothies? How about when they're served with a side of... the Shaky Hands ! Yup, the Shakies are bringing their jangly summertime pop tunes to the Hawthorne Burgerville on Thursday, July 29. Also on the bill is the sweet, sweet sounds of the Rainy States and indie wunderkinds Starparty . Sure sounds like the makings of a Happy Meal to me! (I'll be here all week, folks, try the [...]

There are several cryptic hints on the group's MySpace page (including the...okay, the rather obvious one pictured here), but now it's confirmed: Jake Morris, the Shaky Hands' drummer since early 2009, has left the group. While this isn't the first Shaky Hands lineup shake-up (get it?) we've seen since the band won WW 's Best New Band poll in 2007 (former drummer Colin Anderson left the group in 2008, briefly replaced by frontman Nick Delffs' brother Nathan until Morris took charge), it does come as a bit of a shocker considering the group's onstage chemistry. [...]

Rollo & Grady is heading to Austin later this week. Almost 2000 bands are participating this year at South By Southwest, and deciding which shows to attend can be overwhelming. After sampling roughly 1200 bands, we selected 200 bands to check out. Many of these artists we've covered in the past, but we've also discovered several new groups that we're excited to share with you. Tomorrow we're highlighting 23 artists that we feel will generate the biggest buzz at (and after) the festival. Adam Green (Myspace) [...]

We typically don't ever blog on the weekends here, but in the spirit of spring cleaning our desktop we decided it would be a good idea to finally get rid of some MP3's we've had laying around for a bit --without all the superlatives/puffery. Because we're just no-frills like that. MP3: Shaky Hands - Allison MP3: Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - I Learned The Hard Way MP3: Sambassadeur - Days MP3: Real Estate - Beach Comber MP3: Horse Shoes - Believing In God [...]
Enjoy their terrific performance of 'Caught In The Storm' in the clip below. MP3: Shaky Hands - We Are Young
*Handsome Furs - Radio Kaliningrad* Brilliant Colors - Absolutely Anything The Shaky Hands - Allison & The Ancient Eyes Frankie Rose - Thee Only One The Decemberists - The Engine Driver

New year, new record label. At least that's the case for Quasi . This past June, the Portland indie rockers signed with Kill Rock Stars and are preparing their label debut for 2010. American Gong , as it will be known, is destined to hit retail outlets on February 23rd and is the band's first album since 2006's When The Going Gets Dark. It will also be their first record with bassist Joanna Bolme, who joined in 2007. For a group that's been around since the early 90s, that's a lot of firsts! [...]
