Strap on your Pucci best. We're rifling through our treasure trove of interviews to fish out a vintage gem–the better to explore the strange vortex in which fashion and musicians meet. Today, we're giving Shannon McArdle the once-over to see if she's a must-buy or a throwback. Ms. McArdle went solo when her band Mendoza Line–and her marriage to lead singer Timothy Bracy–broke up. She emerged from the double devastation with Summer of the Whore , a semi-autobiographical album that manages to mix humor, vengeful bitterness, dour acceptance, regret and masochism with "dignity and [...]

I am not sure what ended the marriage between former Mendoza Line members Timothy Bracy and Shannon McArdle, but the title of McArdle's first solo album tells me that it may have not be so amicable. The record is called 'Summer Of The Whore.' It's a really great record, although almost brutal to listen to at times. It reminds me a lot of Beck's 'Sea Change'...you get that almost uncomfortable feeling sitting there, listening to how a love dissolved. Here is one of the more upbeat tunes, still pretty acidic, and no words are minced. [...]

That Night in June - Shannon McArdle So here's the situation. An artist puts out a record that's okay but nothing special. Except for two songs that are just out of this world good. More albums are released all of which hover in the general territory of listenable but not particularly moving. At what point do you write of those two tracks as an aberration? In this example, the two tracks are "Catch a Collapsing Star" and "The Lethal Temptress" and the artist is Shannon McArdle (formerly of The [...]

Somehow in all their years of existence, I'd never heard a Mendoza Line song - and I'd laboured under the impression that they were emo. I wonder why? They're kind of country rock, if anything. Now they've broken up, mainly due to the marital split of frontpeople Tim Bracy and Shannon McArdle. From what I've read, Tim was the one who walked out - so Shannon recorded an album all about what a shitty year she's had. It's a harrowing listen, as break-up albums that aren't Fleetwood Mac generally are, but it's intriguing and gritty and [...]

It's easy to conflate Shannon McArdle 's band and her marriage, both of which involved Timothy Bracy very prominently and both of which are now defunct. As if declaring independence, she debuts as a solo artist with a song that leaves behind the country trappings of her work in the Mendoza Line . "Poison My Cup", from her awesomely-titled debut album Summer of the Whore , sounds decidedly lo-fi, with repeating elements that grow hypnotic as the song progresses: a heartbeat floor [...]
I hope that you appreciate the fact that I very seldom post more than one song from the same album at once, but this is rare case in which I think the songs -- which segue into each other on the record -- work too well together to be considered on their own. Shannon McArdle "Leave Me For Dead" Shannon McArdle "I Was Warned" "Leave Me For Dead" and "I Was Warned" are essentially the same story [...]
