The buoyant single "What Love Looks Like", debuting here on PopMatters, is clearly the product of a life-learned maturity. Fittingly making its premiere on Valentine's Day, the song is a portrait of modern-day love, set to an upbeat and melodious tune Shannon Stephens began her musical career at a Christian art school called Hope College, where she comprised one-fourth of indie, folk-rockers Marzuki. It was there, while playing guitar and lending her vocals, that Stephens met bandmate Sufjan Stevens. After the dissolution of Marzuki, Stephens released her first solo album in 1999, before putting her pursuit of fame on [...]
It's going to be a while before we get the chance to hear Shannon Stephens ' new album -- we're expecting it sometime next summer -- but for now we will savor "Cold November", a new, perfectly seasonal, perfectly lovely offering from the Seattle singer/songwriter featuring instrumentalist DM Stith. You may want to know that Stephens hangs out with an impressive pedigree of performers -- Sufjan Stevens (with whom she used to play), Rosie Thomas, Denison Witmers, etc. -- and that her upcoming 2012 album follows up 2009's The Breadwinner , an album we [...]
Sam Watts of Ghosts I've Met ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth Still in its nascent stages, it's not clear how or if the "Occupy" movement happening around the United States will permanently change the future economic landscape. What is clear is that it has started a conversation about how a system of corporations and big income [...]

On Joyful Wings presents a tribute to Seven Swans by Sufjan Stevens to benefit the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

"Seven Swans Reimagined" is released by On Joyful Wings , a project that benefits the Susan G. Komen foundation . This is the label's second project. The album Seven Swans is organized around a series of bible verses. Seven is Christan special number, referring to completeness, and referenced in the Book of Revelation. FWIW, the seven swans from "The 12 Days of Christmas" are said to refer to the the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading and compassion. [...]

Damien Jurado ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Our big, written properly, not just a list of The Top 25 Northwest Albums of 2010 is coming soon, really, WE PROMISE. But today I wanted to share my personal favorites of 2010. Also, my number one most listened to local album of 2010 was basically a "Best [...]
Originally I was considering calling this post something along the lines of "2010 albums that should have been on your top 50 but probably weren't." I've since come to the realization that this wasn't quite right. For one, that is way too long of a title for a post. But at the same time, it is a little unfair for me to impose my views about these albums on everyone else, so I thought that it might be better to just let you guys take a listen. Still, the sentiment remains the same. It is 2011 now, and I've read countless [...]

It seems that the final Stevens sibling has finally gotten her 15 (or more precisely, 17:02) minutes of fame. The morning of August 20, Sufjan released a new EP entitled ' All Delighted People .' The last track on this sprawling 60 minute EP is titled Djohariah, the name of Sufjan's little known sister. The Stevens brothers have made big names for themselves - Sufjan has essentially indie god status while Marzuki is a marathoner who qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials after finishing 20th overall in the 2006 Boston Marathon. As [...]
Details about Marnie Stern's upcoming record have recently emerged, and I can't help but notice the title of track number five, "Female Guitar Players are the New Black." While the statement needs to be taken with a grain of salt, there seems to be some truth to it as well. St. Vincent shreds harder than [...]

Francis & The Lights - It'll Be Better MGMT and Drake tourmates release their first full length, following several hypeworthy EPs. Led by the absurdly named Francis Farewell Starlite, their soulful sound has been compared to Prince and Peter Gabriel, but this is no rehash. Chances are that if you're reading this, you're probably not at Bonnaroo and thus probably are a bit jealous/bored/sad/etc. So now would probably be a good time to drop this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. As always, included is a mix of the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. Hey, it might not be the same as a weekend in Manchester, but here's hoping this keeps you entertained for at least a couple hours. NEW Singles: "Get [...]

Totdat Will [...]

Shannon Stephens - "Catch the Morning Line" A track from Stephens 's self-titled 2000 debut full-length, newly repressed by Asthmatic Kitty , and due out on 7/20.

While not quite the Stevens I was expecting from Asthmatic Kitty Records this year ( 2010, pals ), Shannon Stephen's breathtaking The Breadwinner is just as welcome - and maybe more so, given the decade-long wait following her self-titled debut. Stephens also served as frontwoman for Sufjan's undersung Marzuki, but The Breadwinner shares more in common with White Hinterland's recent gem Phylactery Factory - it's a set of intimately recorded, lush, jazz-tinged singer-songwriter pop that's as sweet and joy-inducing as spiked eggnog at the office Christmas party. White Hinterland's Casey Dienel offers more vocal [...]

Not only does she share syllables with Sufjan Stevens, Shannon Stephens also shares his sensitive mastery of simply constructed melodies. Much has been made of her return to music after the birth of her child - rightfully so. If your mom was Norah Jones, this is how your lullabyes would sound. Reminds Us Of: Norah Jones | A Fine Frenzy | sad, female Colin Hay Shannon Stephens: ( Label | MySpace ) shannon stephens the breadwinner [...]
