The young Australian James Frew is restoring faith in Electro. With a few EP's under his belt along with a string of phenomenal bootlegs, mash-ups, and live edits, Frew has received a serious amount of recognition from fellow Aussie Tommy Trash . When I stumbled across this mix, I honestly wasn't too sure what to expect of it, but instantly the grinding synths caught my attention and helped me establish a fond appreciation for a genre that I thought was truly dead. So, thank you James Frew [...]

Performing under the name Mozart's Sister , one-woman electro pop artist Caitla Thompson-Hannet is at once self-effacing and awkwardly sincere. Hailing from Montreal, Hannet formerly played with chamber rock outfit Shapes And Sizes , before branching out to pursue her solo material in 2011. Similar in delivery to the likes of vocal powerhouse Jenny Wilson and Pat Benatar , Thompson-Hannet needs no convincing that "love is a battlefield." Her self-recorded and released debut EP [...]

I was somewhat hesitant on doing this list. But I was like heck with it and list down my favorite shows of 2010. Going through the photos I've taken in 2010. I made a list of my Top 20 favorite shows in and out of Ottawa. Enjoy the photos. Please comment if you feel a show was missing. Caribou and Toro Y Moi at Babylon Nightclub The first of two shows Caribou did in 2010. The show on May 4, 2010 was fun [...]

Here is another installment of the best of 2010 Canadian albums. At the moment I am trying to re-arrange the whole Top 30 now. There is alot of great Canadian albums in 2010, its very hard where to place them. This time its from #21-#30. Hope you will like who is in this list. Don’t forget to check out their music. Shapes and Sizes - Candle To The Your Eye [...]

2010 is almost ending soon and its time to do a year end list on music. I know its going to be annoying for those "Best Of" list. I think its fun doing it. Starting today I will re-listen the albums that came out in 2010. (Sorry EPs and albums that came out in late 2009 can not qualify) I will be doing a Top 50 list. Like I did last year I will post them separately from #50-#41 and etc. There might be last minute changes, some albums might be dropped out and [...]

This year's Pop Montreal is lookin' like one for the books. The ever-so-good Said the Gramophone wrote up an excellent guide for this year's Pop Montreal. Basing this post off that and the POP MONTREAL site, I'm gonna go through what would be a pretty ideal long weekend of music and then we'll see how close I come to accomplishing it. Pop Montreal starts Wednesday, September 29th and the fun doesn't stop until Sunday, October 3rd. * Underlined shows/events are ones I will foreseeably be going to. Sometimes, there are overlaps (Thursday's a [...]

On their third album Candle to Your Eyes Montreal-based Shapes and Sizes document a slick, dark and sensual sound, its curves draped in noir's glamorous velvet. Fusing garage rock with elements of classic funk and R&B, the band would risk sounding incoherent were it not for their trump card; vocalist Caila Thompson-Hannant's seductive vocals tie the rest of the sound together. Quite wisely, Rory Seydel has been relegated to secondary vocal duties. Without doubt he is a capable alternative to Thompson-Hannant, but it is the latter's easy mastery of vocal acrobatics so often misused - not least [...]

Drake 's come out of hibernation for a big week of new releases including the latest from the venerable Arcade Fire and Drake fave Wavves . (FYI, "The Suburbs" is still priced at an attractive $3.99 on Amazon.com.) -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 08.03.10 Summers in Seattle are a busy time, as we only get a compressed amount of time to wear sunglasses, and we all know it can be tough typing on a laptop with suntan lotion-greased digits. Seriously, though, it's been nuts what [...]

After moving from coast to coast, and spending two years writing and recording, Wakefield's Ryan Escolopio has finally settled down in Baltimore, MD. Taking his pop punk roots to another level, Ryan broke into the indie rock scene with his new project Fox in the Henhouse - The Fox EP, on iBOT Records. The band's upcoming self-titled album, Fox in the Henhouse, unites his poignant lyrical styling with rollicking guitars to spark a number of crowd pleasers. The album, with standout tracks like “Fears,” which appeals to indie rock fans and non-indie rock fans alike, is set [...]

Summers in Seattle are a busy time, as we only get a compressed amount of time to wear sunglasses, and we all know it can be tough typing on a laptop with suntan lotion-greased digits. Seriously, though, it's been nuts what with the vacations and a scaled back workforce at my day job. But it was going to be hard to punt on this week's release, with two of 2010's best albums dropping in stores. The latest from Arcade Fire and Wavves are sure to make more than a few best of lists, and help add some sizzle to summer's [...]
If this LP is an attempt to grab a brass ring, it shows Shapes and Sizes reaching for it using solely a raised middle finger. It used to be that you had three albums to solidify your standing with whatever label you were signed to. If, by album three, you hadn't chalked up a hit or critical acclaim, your musical career was more or less over. Of course, these days, it's more like if you haven't made it out of the gate within the first 15 minutes of a single being released, you can more or less forget it. [...]

Between the many great albums out this week, coupled with those missed from last week, going to the record store would provide quite the headache in what to pick up other than Arcade Fire's latest. Obviously, the band's third album, The Suburbs , is what everyone will be primed to pick up today. Though, I would definitely recommend the new Autolux album, Transit Transit , along with some excellent releases from Best Coast , The Magic Numbers , Menomena , Young Galaxy , and Versus . [...]

Well it's finally arrived. Arcade Fire releases their new LP The Suburbs (with 8 different covers - pictured above) today after much anticipation (for those who haven't heard the leak or the NPR stream ). I've heard bits and pieces of the album and I have a feeling it will fall in between Funeral and Neon Bible , but the jury is still out. Other new releases of note can be found below along with a whole [...]

Arcade Fire 's much anticipated third full length, " The Suburbs ", is due for official release tomorrow, so don't just sit there, order ! I've managed to stream the album at least a dozen times by now, and I can honestly all the hype the band attracted on blogs and reviews is more than justified. The Suburbs has moments where it's as intense as Funeral or as uplifting as Neon Bible, but at another level - not necessarily up or down. It's just different, maybe a better word would be matured. One of 2010's top ten without a [...]
It's hard to believe that it's been nearly three years since Shapes and Sizes ' last album, 2007's woefully underrated Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner . That release, on the super-indie-friendly label Asthmatic Kitty, seemed ready to launch the band to bigger heights. I mean, Sufjan Stevens likes them, so why don't more people? The Montreal foursome's music was frenetic, acrobatic, fun, and extremely melodic. So, maybe in hopes of reaching that larger audience, Shapes and Sizes kicked into a different gear, moving from spastic Broken Social Scene territory to a darker, more subdued, elastic sound. Sometimes, [...]
