In a progressive and respectable move to meet high demand for all ages shows, UK's The Great Escape, which kicked off today, has incorporated AA events for the first year since its 2006 inception. While American festivals like SXSW usually come with satellite events and unsanctioned basement shows, that of course underaged attendees can access, for the most part the festival season targets 21+ crowds. Of course there are smaller operations that address minors like Bamboozle, and even New England Metal & Hardcore Fest, et al, it's presumed for the most part that younger fans are harder to [...]

Rather than being your standard LP, Ronin works best as a set piece, an amplification of setting and feeling. It is the unstated mise-en-scène of Ronin that makes it special, not its music. [...]

NYC garage quartet Shark? seem to inhabit a world where primarily everyone dons a poor quality Ronalde Reagan (I assume this is Reagan. Just a janky, janky Reagan) mask in their normal lives. They wear a Reagan mask when they're at band practice, making out, and stealing people's purses. It's the right display of Shark?'s sense of humor, whose anti-ode to the women of the west coast "California Grrls" may be vitriol-laden but seems to have a tongue-in-cheek sensibility to it. The band has just released the song with Old Flame Records, who will also drop their full-length Savior [...]

Say what? Shark embryos cannibalize their littermates in the womb, with the largest embryo eating all but one of its siblings. Now, researchers know why: It's part of a struggle for paternity in utero, where babies of different fathers compete to be born. The researchers, who detailed their findings today (April 30) in the journal Biology Letters, analyzed shark embryos found in sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) at various stages of gestation and found that the later in pregnancy, the more likely the remaining [...]
If a band is labeled with a certain genre, then it's inevitable that the band's album ends up categorized accordingly. UK rock band Sharks were described in their press release for new album Selfhood as a punk band. As a punk album, then, Selfhood is bland and confused. Lead singer James Mattock attempted to clarify in an interview , stating, “We aren't a punk band.” But as a straight rock album, Selfhood is middling and piece-meal, with influences pulled from all directions. In that same interview, Mattock mentions inspirations ranging from Woody Allen to [...]

Sharks Selfhood Rise Records 29 April 2013 by Alex Andrews Something that doesn’t add up about Sharks is how publications like this very website – usually concerned with the heavier end of the musical spectrum – have come to write about them. Support slots with Gallows, Fucked Up and erm, Lostprophets have seen the band cast by certain sections of the media as the fresh-faced saviours of punk’s true spirit, while they’ve gone on peddling something closer to [...]
