Sharon Van Etten - Tramp By Richard Wink A singer-songwriter has an integral, active role to play in the life of a music listener. I write this review after coming to the realisation that a woman I was steadily falling in love with has no interest in reciprocating my tame, vague advances. Whilst I and this 'special ladyfriend' were out together drinking together in a ramshackle pub she described to me her ideal man. Soberingly, I did not fit her criteria either physically, or emotionally. I was not tall, didn't [...]

Dusdin Condren/Courtesy of the artist On the surface, Sharon Van Etten 's new album, Tramp , has a fitting title. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter's third album—released earlier this month via Jagjaguwar—reflects the lifestyle she lead for the 14 months it took her write and record it. During that time, she slept on couches, kept all of her belongings in her car, and recorded in the home studio of The National's Aaron Dessner; the result is an edgy, ragged album tougher than her break out, 20092s Because I Was In Love , and more stylistically [...]

I got pulled over tonight. Nothing big, just a bad taillight. The cop may have thought I was trying to evade him, pulling into the dark, always vacant Skagit Valley College parking lot late on a Friday night. As soon as I rounded the corner, his lights went on. He was really nice, just wanted to give me a heads up that the light was off. Made sure my license was valid, I had insurance, and the old beater BMW was a registered vehicle. And he let me [...]

Sharon Van Etten at SXSW (03/18/11) Words : Drake Lelane Photos : D. Caplan ( more ) Since February is the shortest month of the year, I'm thinking it's going to have to be the most condensed with interesting releases, and this first week goes some ways to proving the theory true. New releases from Sharon Van Etten , Dr. Dog , Air, Of Montreal, The Twilight Sad and Mark Lanegan certainly make their cases. There's also new releases from The Duke Spirit, Ben [...]

The beast of hype is a nasty one. It takes wholesome innocents like Sharon Van Etten and aligns them with a world of unfair, ill-informed assumptions, too-cool-for-school bio photos, and overwrought press releases. Prepared or not, this past week, Sharon Van Etten was well acquainted with the publicity machine. But Saturday night's sold out show at the Black Cat was a strong reminder that this young songwriter can never be stripped of her charm, passion, or eagerness, not even by such a vicious beast as hype. For better or worse, it also showed she ain't perfect. [...]

Van Etten performs for World Café Live , Soirée de Poche , and The New York Times Magazine .

Sharon Van Etten is a New Jersey native who is currently based in Brooklyn and she's just released her third album, called Tramp . She's another artist I heard on the radio recently, and it was actually the first I'd heard of her at all. A little bit of time on the internet told me she's been making good music for a good few years (her first album came out in 2009). Of great interest to me was the fact that on her latest LP she's worked with members of The Walkmen, The National and Beirut. [...]

Photo by Dusdin Condren From NPR Music : On her 2009 breakthrough Because I Was in Love , Sharon Van Etten is the embodiment of exposed nerves; the very essence of wounded vulnerability. The albums which follow, 20102s epic and the new Tramp , stretch muscles and viscera over those raw nerves. Even when she's conveying disappointment, hurt or longing, Van Etten sounds more assertive and complex these days, aided by the ever-knottier contributions of guest players from The National , Wye Oak , Beirut and The Walkmen . [...]
