Live Review: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds w/ Sharon Van Etten @ The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC 3/17/13 photos by Emily Pietras It's been five years since Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have toured America, and in the unique and never-predictable story of Nick Cave, five years is a long time. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds @ Massey Hall (live review)

A sold out mob packed Massey Hall in Toronto on Saturday night to take in the one sure-fire show (nominally) on this year's Canadian Music Week schedule as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds brought their dramatic rock show to town. The first portion of the evening was dedicated to songs from the new album Push the Sky Away .  The eerie "We No Who U R" kicked things off.  "Wide Lovely Eyes", "Higgs Boson Blues", and "We Real Cool", were a mixed bag of intensity and uncharacteristic stretches of boredom.  The single "Jubilee [...]

Record Store Day 2013: Sub-Pop Sub Pop has announced its releases for Record Store Day 2013. These will include a limited edition, various artists compilation entitled Sub Pop 1000 . “Peace Signs” – Sharon Van Etten (2010)

From Sharon Van Etten's 2010 album Epic, "Peace Signs" is chick rock at it's best.  Dark and moody yet sweet and subtle the song drives along with the chug of an electric guitar and the pounding of an unavoidable bass drum.  A 'sign' of good things to come this well crafted tune is reflected in Van Etten's newest album Tramp, which employs these tricks to their fullest ability. Review | Pickwick – Can’t Talk Medicine

A bout a year and a half ago we posted about Seattle’s Pickwick, a group of 6 guys with a whole lot of soul. Our post wasn’t about a new track, or an album review, just a video of the guys performing a few tracks in a basement, as part of Seattle-based music blog Sound on the Sound’s video series . Our plea? To check these guys out. In the time since then, the band’s been selling out shows in the Pacific Northwest, and after a stellar showing at last year’s SXSW, they caught the eye of [...]

Interview: Torres

Interview: Torres Recently back from a successful début tour and riding the well-deserved wave of love for her self-titled first album, if Torres - real name Mackenzie Scott - isn't on your radar yet... Well, I hope you're enjoying yourself under that rock. Despite the hectic schedule and the rapid approach of SXSW , she was kind enough to set aside some time for a chat. For once I got the time-zone difference right and all went ahead as planned. Read on for encounters with Sharon Van Etten [...]

“I wish they would let me go home”, J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten.

How many times have you found yourself thinking that very same thing this afternoon then, eh? Can you even count them on the one hand? If you're struggling to truck on into the weekend, then we've a rather apposite one to throw on and haul you through: the conjoining of the respective creative forces of Dinosaur Jr. main man  J Mascis and the ever resplendent  Sharon Van Etten , the collaboration is to my mind – and indeed my ears, as it just so transpires – something of a dream realised. In fact, I'd go so far as to [...]
