What: Brooklyn blues-rock duo She Keeps Bees (aka the "White Stripes in reverse" ) perform a new track entitled "Counter Charm" during a recent BreakThru Radio studio session. With chatter-y drums and a menacing grunge guitar groove, the track's got charm in the way a disheveled hitchhiker on a deserted road might. The pair's latest album, Dig On , is out now. Since we've been blogging about music, I've discovered new bands in all sorts of unique ways. This one might take the cake. I was coaching my kid's kindergarten baseball team and mentioned to the other coach that I was going to go to Schubas that night. It turned out that his brother-in-law and his girlfriend were playing that night as the opening act. I had planned on being all nice, telling them that they were great no matter what they sounded like. To my surprise, it took one verse to realize that my honesty wouldn't be compromised. She [...]

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the Asteroids Galaxy Tour play a show at Bowery Ballroom. What I totally didn't expect, was to fall in love with their opener, She Keeps Bees. A trio I had never heard of, and instantly remembered because of their unique name and 60s retro rock sound, (reminiscent of a bad ass chick singer version of The Black Keys), I was blown away. The lead singer was a swaggy, long-haired chick by the name of Jessica Larrabee, and by the time their set was over, I was both sad and totally in the [...]

http://shekeepsbees.com/ / Facebook I don't think I've mentioned She Keeps Bees for a while (I checked - it was February). It's a difficult thing maintaining this blog sometimes, the continual search for 'new / fresh' music means you forget about some bands who are close to your heart, She Keep Bees are certainly one said band who should have been featured again a lot sooner. They released their third full length (although 'Minisink Hotel is sometimes ignored) 'Dig On' in July and played quite a few shows / festivals around [...]
Whether deliberate or not, every day at a festival seems to take on a theme of its own, and somehow this phenomenon seemed more pronounced at End of the Road Festival this year at Larmer Tree Gardens on the border between North Dorset and Wiltshire. Friday was ladies' day, no doubt about it, with some old codgers thrown in for good measure; not a young man in sight. Against all September odds, Friday morning brought blazing sunshine: the only appropriate response was a trip to the Garden Stage. With its gently [...]

Last week, the UK's Larmer Tree Gardens hosted a hilariously deep bill for the End Of The Road Festival, a lineup that featured Joanna Newsom, Kurt Vile, Tinawiren, Lykke Li, Best Coast, the Walkmen and dozens of other notables. Elena Morelli was there to magnificently document the epic lineup. There's a peacock in one of her shots. You should find it.
In a day and age in which music can be created with nothing but a laptop, it's reassuring that some bands haven't forgotten how to rock the old-fashioned way. Together, guitarist/singer Jessica Larrabee and drummer Andy LaPlant are She Keeps Bees , a down-and-dirty rock duo with more bite than most current acts. For Dig On , Larrabee and LaPlant "pulled a Bon Iver" and retreated to a log cabin in the Catskills to write and record. The band has always kept things simple, and that's a huge key to their appeal. [...]
Last week saw the release of the new She Keeps Bees album Dig On. It hardly seems any time since their previous full-length Nests, but a quick glance at the calendar reveals that was two years ago. It certainly left its mark on my ears. In the intervening time, the ...

Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant have undertaken very much the done thing in the indie world (Bon Iver anyone?) and made a record in a cabin. Perhaps Brooklyn was getting just a bit too crowded for them. Maybe they had an argument with Interpol. Who knows? Either way, the radical change in surrounding hasn't quite been matched with a change in sound for She Keeps Bees, but nonetheless Dig On does mark somewhat of a shift from the band's pervious album. She [...]

July seems to be a great month for albums, and this latest offering from She keeps Bees is no exception. To be brutally honest, this is not a record that immediately blew me away; at times it's a difficult beast to get to grips with. That changed a few miles into a long car journey when I slipped it on to escape mainstream radio. Driving through the dead of night along the motorway, Dig On seemed to come to life. Buried beneath the surface of the longplayer were sounds and layers previously unheard by my unforgiving ears. Maybe [...]
In a purely traditional sense when we think of a rock band we tend to imagine a bunch of bearded guys, and (occasionally) the groupies that come with it. However the last decade has seen the expansion of a different kind of band, the girl/guy duo; sometimes lovers, sometimes friends, or sometimes something incomprehensible. She [...]
HD Video by G. She Keeps Bees are great! Lead singer Jessica Larabee has a very powerful and soulful voice that will send chills up and down your body. I think at the conclusion of the video you are about to see, you will feel the same way the audience did - by falling in love with this band. Enjoy! <!-- [...]

She Keeps Bees, who are Brooklyn based duo Jess Larrabee and Andy LaPlantm have announced they are to release a new album called Dig On.

Photos by G. She Keeps Bees Hot band alert! Brooklyn rock duo She Keeps Bees hopped across the bridge and played at Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on May 25, 2011. The band is blues/rock and I loved them! Lead singer Jessica Larrabee is a powerhouse on vocals. In between songs, she'd be telling hilarious stories, or making random banter with the crowd ("who here likes to wear bras?") and in a fraction of a second, she'd whip right into a song where she belted [...]

[photos by Amanda Hatfield ] We have seen She Keeps Bees five times in the last year, and they have never failed to deliver the goods. Of the 12 bands at our 2010 CMJ show , they were perhaps the best received of all the excellent acts. She Keeps Bees opening set at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday last was no exception. Due to the sound mix up in the balcony, Jessica's vocals were not as prominent as usual, but this gave us the opportunity to focus [...]
This already started but I doubt any of the bands you want to see have played yet. RSVP & Details:Brain-Cave Festival

Justin Stivers has been super busy working on the Brain-Cave Festival (this Saturday @ Shea Stadium ), so Justin Gonzales of Pet Ghost Project sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: The first line of Facet Squared by Fugazi is always in my head. I love that album In On The Kill Taker . [...]

It's the weekend of SXSW. Maybe you're there, like Katie, soaking up the good music, having a lonestar and rubbing elbows with other music-lovers. But you might not be there, like Alyssa, who is instead about to run for the border, (literally.) Either way, the requests came in from several Steam Co readers, and their request was epic: GIVE ME SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST they said. And so it was. "Smith Westerns - Perfect in My Mind" "Ellie Goulding - Lights" "Lower Dens - Blue [...]
