Starting out, I was based in the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas. There is a band worth checking out every night, from the big names playing Emo's or Stubb's to the locals cutting their teeth at The Parish or Mohawk. Here are some the best that I had to pleasure to notice. Most people know Spoon and Voxtrot . They are the darlings of the Austin indie scene. Instrumental sensations Explosions in the Sky are opening for Smashing Pumpkins. Okkervil River [...]
There's nothing quite so captivating as dream pop made good. With layer upon layer of guitars meticulously put together, and muted melodies over droning drums, She, Sir have created a sound that is as opaque as it is alluring. Recently dropped EP, Who Can't Say Yes , has obvious nods to Kevin Shields, but these classically trained Austin Texas natives are taking shoegaze to places that have not yet been tread. Highly recommended. She, Sir - You Can't Catch A Thing She, Sir - It's [...]
(Yeah, so what , I made up my own best-of category) The shoegaze genre made a triumphant return in 06 and looks like it will continue on into 07. Of course, bands have been sprinkling some shoegaze influence into their music for years now, but it seems like this year there is more of a return to the traditional sense of the sound, only slightly upgraded. It is the next retro genre to be recycled and one I look forward to for it's great sound and fun experimentation with the "wall-of-sound". Although I am sure there [...]
I'm going to be introducing a new feature for Thursdays. We'll call it the Triple Track, and will be shooting you three MP3s from bands that we've heard of over the past week or so. Could be from anywhere in the country and of any genre. These are just three quick things worth checking out every Thursday afternoon. Enjoy! ______________________________ ________ Dosh is going to be hitting the road in January and February in support of his fabulous record, The Lost Take [...]
Space/Love/Robots are from Tallahassee, Florida and give us fuzzy, reverbed filled melodies, just the way I like my Shoegaze. mp3 Space Girl Love Burst The Place Promised Beyond The Clouds is also from Tallahassee and is a project of one creating textural Shoegaze goodness via guitar and effect boxes. Pretty trippy stuff for a band of one. mp3 Cold Air The Snowdonnas are from Ft. Worth Texas and this is not the first time I have [...]

The first album from Heartache With Hard Work-favorites She, Sir is out today. In case you missed it when I first talked about them , check out this song. It's My Way of Staying Connected As I said in July: It's not too often that I'll hear to something and instantly love it--usually it takes a few listens before I really get into a song--but this song by the Austin-based She, Sir is one of the rare ones that absolutely blew me away from [...]

I recently found out about Austin, Texas band She, sir and their upcoming EP Who Can't Say Yes . What I found was a great first effort. My friend Brent offered to write the review...so without further ado: She, Sir may have just made the follow-up to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless that never happened. Whereas Smahing Pumpkins took Shoegazer and meshed it with a grunge-glam sound, "She, sir" sticks to the genres more traditional roots using [...]

Few artists have the certain skill and tendancy to create hypnotic layers of sound that captivate the listener and bring them to a different place. In the mainstream, the genre of shoegaze is often thought of as a bunch of guitars with mindless distortion layered with vocals containing an excess of reverb. I've even heard several people foolishly say that shoegaze is the easiest genre to create. These people do not understand the talent that goes into the musical aspect of creating atmosphere within sound, such as the mind-bending drones that legendary artists such as My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive [...]
Click the picture above and donate to the Global Fund For Women! It is obvious by listening to the Austin, Tx. band She Sir that they pay homage to the Gods of the Shoegaze genre. But, don’t be quick to label SS as a copycat band because there is a whole lot more lurking behind the shimmering guitars. The founders of the group M. Grusha and Russell Karloff met while attending a music

It's My Way of Staying Connected - She, Sir It's not too often that I'll hear to something and instantly love it--usually it takes a few listens before I really get into a song--but this song by the Austin-based She, Sir is one of the rare ones that absolutely blew me away from the first second. Shades of My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai, and pretty much any other band known for creating layers of sound, but there's something beyond that. This is not your typical [...]
