This week's Gotta Hear Song of The Week is a cover of Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty duet, "Stop Draggin'My Heart Around," by singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten and the Austin band Shearwater . The cover was released for Record Store Day this past Saturday on Sub Pop Records as a special limited edition 7-inch single. It was originally recorded for the A.V. Club Undercover video series. Celebrating 25 years as not only a Seattle but a national institution, local label Sub Pop is throwing a party on Saturday, July 13th, in the historic (and industrial) Georgetown neighborhood and we're all invited. The Silver Jubilee is free to all and features, as was announced today, an incredible initial lineup. Here to introduce the bands, some of Sub Pop's elder statesmen: In case you hear it all over the din of industry and construction, these are just some of the bands you'll be able [...]

In this edition, Shearwater covers David Bowie's song "Abosolute Beginners". Fun Facts: *"Absolute Beginners" is the theme to the film of the same name that was based on a book of the same...

Graceface Records has enlisted a star-studded collection of singer-songwriters for a new tribute album honoring the late Jason Molina . Weary Engine Blues features contributions from Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie, The Microphones), Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon), John Vanderslice, Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg, Allo Darlin', and Will Johnson, among others. Below, you can stream Kozelek's cover of "It's Easier Now". The album comes accompanied by a screen print (which you can also see below). It was created by William Schaff as a gift to Molina. Proceeds from the sale [...]

Sub Pop has announced its releases for Record Store Day 2013. These will include a limited edition, various artists compilation entitled Sub Pop 1000 . This release very much takes the label back to it's roots, harkening back to compilations like Sub Pop 100 and 200. Like those now collectable releases, Sub Pop 1000 will be limited to a pressing of 5,000 copies on vinyl. The label will also release a collaborative 7" single from Shearwater and one of my favorite young artists, Sharon Van Etten. The single will feature a cover of the Stevie [...]
Jonathan Meiburg (of Okkervil River and Shearwater) covers Roy Orbison's 'It's Over' in the desert.

Norman Wong Increasingly, Friday posts are for clearing off the decks of whatever hasn't gone out earlier in the week, but that doesn't mean the content isn't quality - this ain't no fire sale, son. But it also doesn't mean I'm not giving some stuff away. Because I am. Earlier this week, Toronto electro-operatic sensation Austra announced details of their second album, to be entitled Olympia and due out June 18. And because they believe in deeds, not words, they also made the first single from the new record available [...]
Shearwater stopped by Austin's WUTX radio station on Valentine's Day and was kind enough to play a few songs, including this stripped-down version David Bowie's "Absolute Beginners," from the soundtrack of the film of the same name. Singer Jonathan Meiburg was also kind enough to drop this stream of the performance on Shearwater's Facebook page earlier today. Check out the song below.

Chris ' Top Lists of 2012 This was a good year for music. It usually always is. Mostly, the more one pays attention to new material, the more they think, “This was a good year for music”. It’s safe to say that a lot of the bands I adored back in college took a break this year (save a few, see below), which left a power vacuum in my heart. This year I made a point not to be a jackass in my review, let’s see if it works. [...]
2012 was a fantastic year for new music from both up-and-coming bands and veterans of the music scene. I listened to as much as I could get my hands on [...]

Louis CK - Word Recorded in 2010, Louis CK's Word was used in bits and pieces in those cutaway comedy scenes in Louie. As such, it suffered a bit because you've probably heard some of this before. But it's such strong material delivered by such a great performer that it's hardly a detriment at all. [...]

A year has come and gone as music has helped get us through the toughest of times and keep us happy during the best of times.
