In ten years, if someone asks me whether or not Shearwater had ever released a bad record, I can't imagine a scenario in which the answer would be yes. Shearwater seems to exist as a member of an elite class that doesn't seem quite capable of producing anything pedestrian. Unfortunately, this is a sort of purgatory in which reliability comes at the expense of risk, a fact that was first truly evident on their last album The Golden Archipelago , but continues throughout most of Animal Joy and therefore limits its potential rewards. While there are plenty [...]

photo by Jim Bennett Once again, KEXP will return to Austin, Texas March 14-16 for 20122s rendition of the South by Southwest Music Conference. Every year, SXSW features dozens upon dozens of up-and-coming bands and artists that are blowing up on the scene (the lineup this year is absolutely spectacular). And for the second year in a row, KEXP will broadcast live from Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop and host 15 amazing bands including some up-and-comers like Howler and Of Monsters and Men , some old favorites like The [...]

D.L. Anderson It's unlikely bird videos will ever achieve the same degree of online adoration as, say, cat videos, but when said clips come courtesy of artists who push the boundaries of what can be called folk music the way that North Carolina's Bowerbirds and Chicago's Andrew Bird do, a little more attention should be paid. Both artists released their new albums this week - The Clearing and Break It Yourself , respectively - and both have marked the occasion with the [...]

Last week, we announced our Range Life showcase , taking place at midnight on March 15 at the PureVolume house at 340 E. 2nd St. & Trinity, right in the middle of the brouhaha that is next week in Austin, TX. We've got a nice, well-balanced lineup in store with a dash of international, featuring the likes of Mr. Dream, Shearwater, Bear In Heaven, Screaming Females, Lakutis and DJ sets by REWARDS and Korallreven (but, alas, no Crucifictorious , unfortunately, as they are on hiatus. Texas forever). You won't have to settle down in order to enjoy this [...]

Well, it's a vulgar headline, but you know I will. No-one wants to be that stupid prick at the world's busiest music festival with not a fucking soul at his fucking picnic. So honestly, please come! In all honesty, I think you'll struggle to find a finer lineup for an afternoon's entertainment. Blitzen Trapper are headlining. Mute's Big Deal are playing too, who I discovered courtesy of the brilliant PAWS covering one of their songs for our June split 123. Jonathan Meiburg from Shearwater will be playing a stripped back set with an electric guitar and a backing [...]

I don't often venture north to Baltimore, Maryland for music, but whenever I do I am usually greeted with an exceptional and relatively intimate performance. Being just north of Washington DC, Baltimore is not on the map for most artists when they look at the U.S. mid-Atlantic states. Turns out there are wonderful small venues hidden throughout the city. So I traveled the hour north on an unseasonably warm February Monday night to an art gallery in the middle of the city to see Austin band Shearwater for the first time. [...]
Nestled at the midway point of Animal Joy is 'Immaculate'; it's a short burst awash with early '80s alt-rock dizziness, in which Shearwater leader Jonathan Meiburg sounds like a cross between a young Michael Stipe and Bob Mould. It stands out, marking something of a departure for the prolific Texans. On this seventh LP and debut for Sub Pop, the other ten tracks contained very much feel like business-as-usual. That's no bad thing as that means Meiburg, and more specifically his voice, is central to the record – liked a pumped-up choirboy crossed with Mark Hollis, [...]

Pictures from their opening set at Bowery Ballroom on 2/25 are in this post (pictures of Sharon are HERE ). Shearwater is currently on the road for a string of US and European dates, including SXSW (where they'll play a Stereogum party ), and [...]

There are two types of bands: those who explode and those who abide. And while bands like Sleigh Bells ride a barely controlled burn through the hearts and minds of critics and consumers alike, those like Shearwater are quietly refining, getting closer to 100% purity. And that patience has forged their talents without professionalizing them. Shearwater's best songs split the difference between Fleetwood Mac serendipity and a more rugged sense of hard won craft. On Rooks highlight "The Snow Leopard," the band carefully lays out piano chords like breadcrumbs for the way back while lead vocalist [...]

The Austin, TX band Shearwater recently stopped by the XPN2 studios to perform songs from their newly released album, Animal Joy . Now you can stream the session whenever you like. Shearwater started out as the side project of Okkervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff. Now led entirely by Meiburg, Shearwater's music has gone through many stylistic changes; from orchestral folk to experimental ambient to their newfound rock direction. We'll hear live performances of songs from Animal Joy , and XPN22s Eric Schuman talks with Meiburg about his [...]

Shearwater - Dread Sovereign
Ever since Megaupload and a whole host of other file-sharing (or, some may say, "stealing") sites got shut down, my access to leaked full albums of yet-to-be-released records has dried up. I'm sure there are other ways to find them now but I haven't really looked, so lately I've been reduced to listening to new music the way I did a few years ago -- by downloading single songs off sites like mine and waiting for an album to be released to hear it, off the physical CD copy, or preferrably, via the pre-order MP3 from the label's website. That's [...]

Around midnight on the evening of March 15th, until well after every other bar in town has stopped serving legally intoxicating beverages, the Stereogum crew is throwing an Austin-based party with a bunch of bands we believe in while charging absolutely no money for admission, or legally intoxicating beverages. It's called RANGE LIFE, and it is for you. If you are 21+, and in Austin the evening of March 15th, and near the very conveniently located intersection of E. 2nd & Trinity. The night opens with a DJ set from REWARDS (aka Aaron Pfenning, formerly of Chairlift) [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Radiohead w/ Other Lives Thursday, March 1 Philips Arena - 1 Philips Drive in Atlanta 30303 SOLD OUT! Do I really have to sell this show? Do you really need to hear my justifications on why it's in your best interest to go see what is possibly the biggest and certainly one of the most critically adored bands on the planet? Jesus, I hope not. It would probably be more constructive if I spent a moment or two chiding audiences and a [...]
