Song Shearwater ~ " Rooks " myspace plays: 9,121 download (via matador records ) Austin based Shearwater will release their latest album, Rook , on June 3rd. Shearwater is definitely not a heavy hitting arena rock band, but I am waiting to hear the borderline melancholic tunes in the background of tv shows and movies. Tonight Shearwater will be playing the Troubadour with Clinic. Video The Presets [...]
...well, at least touched down. I've arrived in Portland, but didn't get to do this week's show live, because I had to go to Seattle (actually, Bellevue) for the weekend. I won't get to do next week's show in the studio either, but May 30th, I'll be officially back in the saddle. artist - song - album :: extra info Tu Fawning - Out Like Bats - Secession EP ( myspace | @ Local Cut | Corrinna Repp | 31Knots ) [...]

Between the trip to Virginia and the bar mitzvah and the Phillies game in the rain on Sunday, I'm still trying to catch up on my sleep and still unable to post at my new place of employment. So this will be a quick voyage down NMT, without any accompanying pithy responses. All I can say is this music is good and support the artists who made it. Enjoy. New Wax Ornithology in the house. Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg has an obvious enthusiasm for birds, and his band's new album Rooks with its title and Hitchcockian album cover extends this predilection. Formed by former Okkervil River bandmates Meiburg and Will Sheff and named after the long-winged seabird, Shearwater now serves primarily as Meiburg's songwriting vehicle, and the band creates music that's a good bit more delicate than Okkervil River's. Rather than Will Sheff's manic vocals, you'll hear Meiburg's gorgeous croon, which covers the gamut in range [...]

Like many things, Shearwater pays heavy rewards to the patient, attentative listener. I'm sitting here trying to write this post while the new album Rook bleeds its heart out of my speakers, and it is almost too difficult to focus on typing a string of words while doing so. Not only is it quickly establishing itself as one of the finest album's I have heard this year, I that artwork is fascinating. Founded in 1999 by Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff of Okkervil River, Shearwater was initially designed to merely be an outlet to share quieter [...]

Shearwater 's fifth album, Rook , is a sprawling and eerie epic that is best appreciated on rainy days. "Leviathan, Bound," it's most mesmerizing track, is s percussion-less ballad centered around the haunting, hair-raising voice of lead singer Jonathan Meiburg, formerly of Okkervil River . It has a classic arrangement and delicate bell action, coupled with tense urgency. Shearwater? Shear beauty. Rook will be available courtesy of Matador Records on June 3rd. The band plays Philly's Johnny Brenda's on June 17th. This post has: 1 [...]

With an upcoming album and tour dates, Jonathon Meiburg has decided to focus his sole attention on his main band Shearwater , and as a result, has chosen to leave his other creative outlet, Austin band Okkervil River . While originally a side-project with River frontman Will Sheff, Shearwater's growing exposure has led Meiburg to focus increasingly more attention to the band. Meiburg says the split is "completely amicable", and that Shearwater has grown to the point that it excludes his further participation in Okkervil. "This is just a logical extension of [...]

Shearwater have a follow up to their magnificent album Palo Santo , Rook , coming out June 3rd on Matador Records. Jonathan Meiburg, frontman for Shearwater has announced that he is leaving Okkervil River to focus exclusively on Shearwater. Meiburg says the split is "completely amicable", and that Shearwater has grown to the point that it excludes his further participation in Okkervil. "This is just a logical extension of the way things have been going since 'Palo Santo'", Meiburg adds. "Shearwater's increasingly demanding schedule has meant that I've performed with Okkervil less and less over the past two [...]

Now that I got that whole college graduation thing over, I can get back to the good stuff, that being new music from some of my favorite bands starting with the re-arrange encouraging indie pop duo, Mates of State. The band gave us a taste their new album a couple weeks back with the wonderful "Get Better" and now here's another track (entitled "My Only Offer") to wet our appetites before the May 20th release. I don't think I'll ever get tired of the band's bouncy keyboards and exuberant harmonies. MP3 Mates of State - My Only [...]

Shearwater - Rooks I've been listening to this album quite a lot lately, and it's so damn good, it's almost too distracting to play and write about at the same time. It's even hard to pick a single song from it to share with you, though 'Leviathan, Bound' and the above track are early favourites. It's serene and beautiful, and has a weirdly open and outdoor sound to it, as though it was some sort of natural phenomenon. Even the crashing electric guitars sound like cascading landslides, natural disasters, acts of God. The beautiful elongated [...]

Shearwater - "Leviathan, Bound" . The new record by Shearwater, Rook , is one of the best albums of the year. It takes their last LP's great leap forward and adds patience, confidence, daring. They are a band who recall Mark Hollis/late Talk Talk, Final Fantasy, Silver Mt. Zion and Radiohead's Amnesiac . Since Rook arrived in the mail a week ago, I've scarcely listened to anything else. "Leviathan, Bound" is a song with dulcimer instead of drums, glockenspiel instead of rainfall, strings instead of thunder. It's beautiful and terrifying. Like when the waters begin to [...]
This is shaping up to be a great late spring for live music in Tucson. Even just at the Rialto Theatre there's a string of shows as good as any I can remember: Calexico, Cowboy Junkies, X, Rancid, the RZA, Drive-By Truckers, Steve Earle & Allison Moorer and Mike Ness, just through the end of June. How's that for variety? And over at Club Congress we've got Kathleen Edwards, Von Bondies, the
