![Johnny Cash and Bobby Bare cover Shel Silverstein [Under the Covers]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3517850_lg.jpg)
I have very fond memories of Shel Silverstein in my early years. I remember my parents reading me poems from Where The Sidewalk Ends and A Light In The Attic before I could read and I recall pouring over these pages as I learned to read. Some of my earliest memories. What many don't know is that, in addition to a poet and children's book author, this Renaissance Man named Shel Silverstein was a composer, illustrator, and singer-songwriter. It's been awhile since we've done an "Under the Covers" on HearYa, but Silverstein has been [...]
I took a film class once where we contemplated what kinds of movies could or could not be construed as Westerns. The professor was tall and lanky in a bow tie, with hands that hung down to his knees, a mustache and a 'power donut' hairdo. There were some cute girls with dyed hair and [...]

Maurice Sendak, who should have illustrated The Hobbit , turns 83 in June and though he hasn't published a new book since 1981, fans of the beloved author will be treated to just that in September courtesy of Harper Collins, reports Media Bistro . The new book is named Bumble-Ardy , and if the name sort of sounds familiar in the dark crevasse of your brain, it's because the book began its life as an animated segment for Sesame Street that aired in the [...]

A new collection of never-before-seen poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein will be released in September. The book is titled "Every Thing on It," and this week publisher HarperCollins Children's Books released the image of the cover. The poems and drawings in the book were selected by family members from his archives - Silverstein died in 1999 - and care has been taken to echo his best-known works. Silverstein's books of poetry for children - "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic" - were both bestsellers. He was also the author of the [...]

Famed children's author Shel Silverstein, who passed away in 1999 and is responsible for oh ... just about every one of your favorite books from childhood - A Light In The Attic , Where the Sidewalk Ends , and The Giving Tree , which was turned into a Silverstein-narrated short film in 1973 to name but a few (personal fav has always been both The Missing Piece and its sequel, as well as the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue", [...]

Bobby Bare Jr. has been rocking the music scene from a very young age. When he was six, he was nominated for a Grammy for a duet with his dad on a song written by Shel Silverstein called "Daddy What If." They lost to the Pointer Sisters, but that didn't get Bobby Jr. down. He's had a prolific solo career since the late '90s, and his fans are true and steadfast. Bobby's now on tour supporting his latest record, A Storm, A Tree, My Mother's Head , and took some time to play us a few songs [...]

Shel Silverstein is known far more for poetry found in his books but the songs covered here are not novelties and deserve these second looks. In exuberant detail we hear the disillusionment, sacrifice and compromised dreams of children who outgrow their wonder after life fails to be what it seems. This almost makes me want to buy an iPad. If there's one regret about owning a PC, other than it being a PC, it's that you can't really do anything clever with the decal or logo like you can with Apple's products. [ via ]

Some capsule reviews today, as I'm falling a little behind in my writing and have a hefty 5-show day scheduled tomorrow. Apologies to anyone who would've liked to see full reviews for these shows. Wedding Night in Canada I think that I'm just not the target audience for this show. I realize that I'm at the age and stage of my relationship that talking about getting married no longer sends me running from the room. I do sometimes lose interest pretty quickly when that talk comes around, though, and I have a [...]

Shel Silverstein collections like Where the Sidewalk Ends have helped introduce kids to poetry since the '60s, but not everyone knows the man was also a prolific songwriter. Back in March, we told you about the upcoming Twistable Turnable Man: A Musical Tribute to the Songs of Shel Silverstein , in which artists like My Morning Jacket and Dr. Dog cover his classic songs. You can now hear Lucinda Williams perform the ominous alt-country "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" at cover song blog Cover Me . Originally written for country-rock band [...]

On August 29, 1966, The Beatles played their final live concert in the United Stated to a sold out crowd of screaming fans at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. Now, some 44 years later, the legendary band's bass player - Paul McCartney - will return to the city by the bay for another ballpark show, this time at AT&T Park on July 10. In addition to the Frisco date, Macca has also added a show three nights later at the Rinto Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City, UT, a state that he's never played before. Tickets [...]
